Ding ding ding. Hopefully GarBar budgeted for this in that estimate.

I hate to break this to you both, but the University of Iowa does not own the water tower. The city of Iowa City does.

Petersen Hall opens near Hillcrest this Fall with 501 beds. The Madison Street facility is in early construction and slated to open in Fall 2017, with roughly 1000 beds. But Quad is finally closing and losing 360 beds in the process.

UI is under directive from the Regents to increase their freshman class by 500 students per year for 5 years, as part of the Regents' plan to educate more Iowans. The documents filed in this proposal point out that housing has to turn down student applicants every year.

The dorm proposal here is for all students, not just athletes. NCAA rules disallow an athlete dorm.
Sounds like 50% athletes with dining/training table facilities. http://thegazette.com/subject/sport...illion-renovation-of-kinnick-stadium-20150728

I just saw another part of the proposal is for a new indoor track facility. I wonder if this sets in motion the demolition of the Rec Building for the football complex expansion.

The proposal does say the location of the dorm will be finalized after the process begins and that other buildings may need to be razed. You may be onto something here.

Reminds me of Iowa's little brother in lames, distract the sheep with bells and whistles while the program burns. Don't watch the fire, look at the bright lights and loud noises...

you ever heard the expression all hat and no cattle? while iowa's herd has thinned a bit the past few years, i would suggest it is still ranching......whereas i think it is a beautiful description of folly and the boys @ ames. that bowling in the endzone is a monumental waste. the stuff iowa is building now? the football facilities, the football dorms, the football academic building - etc, etc.

From an engineering perspective, expansion of the north end zone does not seem like a major obstacle. They could go up and over Stadium Drive or just close that street down as it's lightly traveled anyway.

Going over the road was talked about many years ago so that could still be a possibility. I would rather pay off the coach so we can start to move forward again. All the Barta is doing is waving shiny objects in front of everyone's face so we for get about the problems. Heck the last bathroom reno on my side got us reduced to one lousy hand dryer. Seriously we couldn't scrap up another $50 bucks for a second?

I know. I know. But every time someone mentions the water tower I turn into that guy who jumps into any argument and says "yeah, what he said!"

Interesting plan since they just moved all of the visitor's seats way up into the north endzone out of the east stands. Wonder where they'll move them to now?

I hear the marketing department is pushing for the 50 yardline behind the Iowa bench with red pompoms every game

So does this mean we have to reseat everyone again.

If they're going to reseat people any way just take out the aluminum benches and put in actual seat with backs. With the water tower issue if the city owns it I don't see why anyone with the city would object to painting it. I mean the University is THE revenue generator in IC. Whether it's athletics, the artistic community, the hospital or students the city benefits tremendously.

I don't really understand the luxury suite fans. It looks more like watching the game from home, doesn't it? I've never been in one of them. Anyone here shed some light on what the draw of the suite is?

I did some additional checking into the north end zone seating. Currently there are 52 rows with the concourse level being at the 24 row. The new scoreboard is at the back of the bleachers. With this in mind I have more details about my plans to do all of this with losing seating capacity, or maybe adding some.

Plan A, keep approximately the same number of seats. Keep the first 24 rows as standard seating. At concourse level have a full row of luxury boxes. They would be approximately 8 feet high. Continue with the other 28 rows and the scoreboard above that.

Plan B, add approximately 7000 seats. Follow plan A, but extend the seating over Evashevski Drive. I ran some preliminary numbers, and roughly 24 rows could be added over the road. With the elevation increase from the luxury boxes there would be plenty of clearance for buses. Drawbacks to this plan are higher costs, and having the scoreboard further away from the field.

Plan C, add approximately 2500 seats with an upper deck. Keep the bottom section and luxury boxes as listed. However by making the upper section a traditional upper deck about 10 rows could be added over the back section of the lower deck. This would help to make the stadium even more loud, and add a few seats. The problem might be too much elevation for the scoreboard. Not only would this require raising the seats another 12-16 feet, but it would require a steeper pitch to maintain site lines over 38 rows that can add up. The price would add up too.

All these would be nice to see. I think with the money they are asking for something like plan A would be the most plausible. However I would not rule out the other 2 plans yet. What do you all think?

I think this is a good thing. Kinnick is an older stadium, and the North end zone has been ignored for a long time. Get the luxury suites in there as they are the life blood of the program. Big money wants them, and big money donates and isn't as fickle as me the everyday Joe fan. Hey tend to keep donating as long as they have sweet digs. Also love we just got the new football facilities done and now we get the athletes a new dorms as well.

Plan B

I may be wrong, but I thought in years past an explanation was provided that it was not possible secondary to the current design and engineering to expand Kinnick up or out anymore. Maybe that was just on the E & W sides, though. I can almost guarantee any changes will be made within current brick walls of Historic Kinnick. I don't think anything will be going over Evashevski Drive. Not going to happen.

Why wouldn't the City of Iowa City not want to paint the water tower? earlier I was more posting in jest, but it is a legitimate question. It's not like it would offend anyone in Iowa City

I have never watched a game in them but my parents got tickets to a Northwestern game in the suites a few years ago. They said it was nice but they would rather have been in the stands. Obviously some people like it, whether it is as a status symbol or just like a quieter more comfortable place. I think the people who go to Kinnick to enjoy the atmosphere and get a little crazy are better served closer to the field in the stands. I'll see you there.
