we need to get back to basics in our society. i agree with you. accountability. responsibility. loyalty. friendship. work ethic. self determination and motivation. spiritual rennasainse.

My opinion is that none of this is new. There have always been sick, evil an perverted people in the world doing terrible things. However, today we have the internet and fitbits and cellphones and cameras everywhere...so more of them are getting CAUGHT and more of this is hitting the national news.

The Baby Boomers are F'ing up our economy and/or Social Security retirement program.

The Millennials are......well Millennials!

Yes, we live in a mess. Nobody has their priorities straight. It's all about material possessions and who can get over the top on somebody else for gain. F'ed up.

the baby boomers are what is keeping the absolutely horribly run SS funded. don't blame us baby boomers for congress syphoning money for other entitlements and lining their own pockets. the baby boomers are who stand to get ripped off the worst.

Nah, I'm not. Just trying to get a rise out of the BB's!

24 hour news cycle. I get your point. but for those of us that are old enough do remember an age where life was freer and safer. we need that to come back. a society that centers around a cell phone/internet is in peril of losing it's way.

Pump the brakes, pal. Freedom has been eroded, yes, but safety is insanely high now. Events like this or 9/11 are total outliers that we vastly overate in terms of danger because of how heavily they get pounded into our heads. You're way more likely to die in a car accident than in a terror attack or random abduction, but the safety of everything has gone way up.

I don't know about this. As far as children go, I don't think so. Schools were not getting shot up in the 1980's. Also, we freely ruled the town when we were kids. Now you really have to instruct your children and how to travel in groups. Be careful of white vans, black SUV's. I guess I can't agree that it is safer. It might be more equivalent than we think, but it definitely is NOT safer, IMO.

you must not be seeing the same news that I am.

When I was a kid growing up in the 80s and 90s i used to leave my house for hours on end and my parents would just say "be home in time for dinner". So I get what you're saying

however, I would argue that creepy dudes with vans always existed and kids were always getting molested by priests in catholic churches...however there is a lot more awareness about it now and all this stuff is coming to light now thanks to media coverage and the internet and social media. Social media and 24/7 cable news is both a gift and a plague.

Back in the 80s the Molly Tibbett's case probably never would have reached national attention...just local news and local newspapers. Because this stuff is freaking people out now more than ever there are more protections in place.

I think everyone should have an accounta-bil-a-buddy. That would solve the issue.

Things got shot up in the '80's including schools. Hell, a guy with an AK went berserk on some school in Stockton, CA.

You don't have to instruct your children to travel in groups. The notion of "stranger danger" really took off in the '80's, particularly driven by cases like the Johnny Gosch case. But it is all a media creation. The greatest danger to your kids is probably a neighbor or someone at your church who you come to know and trust, it isn't the mustached stranger in a white cargo van.

The media just needs stories to get people to tune in and they know that creating a paranoid and divided populace is how they do that which is why when there is a shortage of news, stories like this or "racism" drive the majority of the news cycle.

i don't think you'll find anyone arguing against you on this. man...when i think back all that i have been fortunate enough to experience since i was 18, it just breaks my heart. she will never get to experience so much.

I'd say my level of concern in protecting my 11 year old daughter has gone up in recent times. Too many pervs and sex traffickers out there.

I'd be more worried about what watching the smut that Hollywood and MTV churn out will do to her than "pervs and sex traffickers." Unless you have aspirations of sending her off to Harvey Weinstein's Acting Camp, in which case then, yeah, I'd be worried about pervs and sex traffickers.

This convo gonna get ugly...

"The man is subject to a federal immigration detainer, meaning he may be an undocumented immigrant in the country."
