Miller: Hawks Can't Lose to UNI. They Can, but they Can't

IF Iowa loses, which sure could happen, KF hot seat just exploded.

Why do people still believe this? Kurt has $20 million worth of insulation to prevent his chair from burning his ***. He could sit in an active volcano and wouldn't see a bead of sweat drop through his crack.

Ya, but its not going to be as fun for him or his bosses at least! Bunch of Fat Cats!

It's actually nothing like that. That was at the beginning of Fran's second season, Fran was just starting to make it his program. Ferentz has been here over a decade, and this is where the program is, hoping to beat an FCS team. Outside of Iowa Ferentz is seen as nothing more than a vastly overpaid average at best coach.

+1. Not to mention under the same head coach, the program had 4 finishes in the Top 10 nationally, three in a row from 2002-04. 8 years later, it speaks volumes about how far the program has slipped when you find yourself wondering if you can even beat an FCS opponent on your home field.

Fran inherited a mess from Lickliter, and hadn't had much chance to turn things around yet. The Campell loss is much more comparable to the home loss against Western Michigan in early 2000.

I fully expect Iowa to lose tomorrow. If we win, no one will really be happy, they just won't be infuriated.

If we lose, we might very well look back at this week as the one where KF's train left the station.

In my opinion, KFs train left the station against Wisconsin in 2010. It's been nothing but downhill from that point forward. It was also the indication to me that the game had simply passed him by....either that or he had grown so conservative and complacent that he forgot what it was like to take a chance, so he was utterly surprised that Beilema would pull a fake punt when everyone in the stadium and on tv knew it was coming.

So if the train left the station against Wisconsin in 2010, this game could be the point where that train simply crashes.

This is just exactly it. Nothing will satisfy some, even win on Saturday, or a win the next Saturday, or a win the following Saturday. That is just the way it tis around these parts....

I started following Iowa football in the early to mid 70"s. So it's been about 40 years I've been a fan. I've seen great, good, bad and ugly teams during this time. However, the conservative philosophy of the current coach has made it difficult to watch on Saturdays.

I love the Hawks and believe Kirk Ferentz is a class act as far as college football goes. However, with each passing year, win or lose, this type of football is so very boring to watch. I know this team is young and some of that is no fault of the head guy. But some of it is. The fact that several players have left this program the last 3 or 4 years is a disturbing trend for sure.

I hope I am 100% wrong on this, but I believe UNI wins 20-10 this Saturday. JVB has a big time arm, but not much else a D1 QB needs.

Dean,

Sometimes people just need to be honest and keep it real. Iowa is not good this year. That is all. It doesn't mean we hate the team.

I openly admit that there is no way to satisfy me as it pertains to this Saturday because of the very nature of the game. There are so many build-in advantages for the big boys that these FCS games are a freaking joke. They go against the entire spirit of competition. It'd be like me be satisfied for throttling some 4th grader at 1-on-1. It's ridiculous in it's very nature.

Also, losing this game would be like me getting beat in my own driveway by some grade school kid. It's just beyond understandable.

You're wrong about the other Saturdays you mention though.

What I don't get is the mentality that if we are "that bad" then there will be no celebrating after a "disappointing" win. I'm still not convinced that we're that bad or that the season is lost. However, regardless if we win the game, I'll take it and won't be disappointed that we won. I think the problem is that everyone wants to play the "season over card" and that we don't have anything this year and want to compare our team to those of the past. hate to break it to you, but this is who we are now, so instead of looking back or looking to the future let's just wish these kids the best and hope that they can turn the season around. It amazes me to see how many jumped on the Vandy bandwagon when he stepped on to the scene when Stanzi went down and then to hear those same people now.

A Hawkeye win that we don't sweat out, will go a long ways towards what I expected this season. A nail-biter or potential loss to UNI...KF's program is in serious trouble and questions need to be addressed.

That's driveway basketball for you. *Snort* *Chuckle*

Personally, I share Ghost's thoughts about this game. I just don't understand how people can be THIS down on our team, especially since we're playing an FCS team. Well, I can/do understand it since I've seen our offensive numbers, but for some reason I just can't see the Hawks play poorly 3 games in a row in front of a home crowd. I believe and am calling that our secondary will keep their passing in check for the most part, and that Vandenberg plays with a fire under his *** after last weeks performance and we actually score a TD in one of the first 2 drives. Hawks 20-17

I would be very satisfied tomorrow if we came out and dominated. A score like 42-10 would make me happy as a gilmore.
But we all know that isn't gonna happen. We may win, but it's gonna be another nail biter most likely.
A 17-14 victory, which is what I'm predicting, will not satisfy the masses. Which is unfortunate. Considering how this team has looked, a 17-14 victory against UNI should be treated like PSU 2008.

If we could avg 24 points instead of 12, with the way our defense and special teams have been performing, we're probably talking about a b10 championship.

I agree with this 100%. Kirk would never try such a thing himself, so he couldn't see it coming. Iowa's football fortunes took a 180 degree turn on that night. I admit I was truly bothered that evening.
