Easy boys. I agree that the final round didn't go as hoped but lets step back and take a look at the whole tournament. Granted I listened to most of the tournament on the radio and wasn't actually there, but here's how I understood it.
125- Gilman beat returning Champ and a 2-time AA and was Most Outstanding wrestler. He gave up 1 point to Delgado who scores in bunches. He can ride anyone in the country. We are fortunately loaded at 125.
Clark lost a tough one to the same 2-time AA in semis before injury defaulting out of the tournament
133- Ramos had 3 bonus point matches then worked over Alan Waters in the semis (who was #1 most of the year last year at 125). Yes, he got stuck by a VERY aggressive Colon and that sucks to see, but he'll be fine. Tony is an animal and will bounce back just like he did after the Schopp loss. For people to call him out and wonder what's wrong and call him pathetic is sickening. The dude has scored bonus points in most of his matches this year and is working toward being his best come March. Again, Tony will be fine.
141 - Dziewa turned it on. He beat the #5 ranked (nationally) wrestler TWICE to take 3rd place. Great tournament for him!
149 - Showed signs of life. Grothus beat #2 ranked (nationally) Tsirtsis to get to the third place match where he lost to.....Sorenson. Yes, Iowa got 3rd and 4th at 149!!!! Kelley, meh. But there's a chance 149 can improve.
157 - DSJ was DSJ. He had a couple majors, a close one and then looked tough in the finals against "the pinning machine". He did what everyone has expected and continues to be the best 157 pounder in the country.
165 - Moore cruised to the semis and beat a tough Massa to reach the finals. Yes he lost to Monk, but Monk seemed like a very frustrating opponent. Long and tall and has a frustrating ride/stall on top (in my opinion). Moore looked tough
174 - The stache had 5 bonus point wins (3 pins). He didn't have the toughest competition but he did what he needed to do and dominated all of his opponents.
184- Lofthouse cruised to the finals where he was less than impressive. He did lose but Sheptock is no slouch. Lofthouse is a mid AA and wrestled like it.
197 - Burak wrestled to his seed and did it in solid fashion. Was able to win some close matches. Whenever he comes back, we'll welcome him with open arms.
Hwt - Telford did what he was supposed to, until the finals. He dominated the lessor opponents. He lost to Coon in the finals which sucks, but gotta give credit to Coon. That is one tough young man. Bobby will have more chances to get back at him.
This tournament was exactly what the guys needed after the PSU dual. Unfortunately they went 3-4 in the finals, but we had 7 in the finals. The guys beat some really tough competition this weekend. Most of us were only able to see the final round and are judging the whole tournament based on that. When the best matches were earlier in the tournament. Aside from a couple dissappointing finals matches, this was a really good tournament by the team as a whole.
