Meth Bowins Not In The Booth This Weekend

I'm not crying "sexism", but people view Harry Caray as a legend and especially toward the tail-end of his career he didn't know jack sh*t about the players he was covering or what was happening on the field. he was always drunk and telling people what a players name backwards sounded like. Can you imagine the outrage if Beth Mowins did this live on air? This forum might meltdown....and yet Caray is a legend and Beth Mowins doesn't know anything about the sport she's covering? It just doesn't make sense to me

Steve Stone is/was a great color analyst really knew the sport of baseball, but he had the all-time nasal voice.

Harry Caray: "Sandberg spelled backwards would be Grebandas." And he would butcher the pronunciation both ways.

...and pretty much everybody knew it...and said so. It's no secret that Harry was a lovable caricature. Baseball is also a bit of a different animal...a guy who's an entertaining character is needed in the booth to balance out the tedium of the game.

It would be more accurate to compare BM to someone with her level of tenure and experience who does football...like Joey Galloway. I've heard plenty of criticisms of guys like him.

For me, male, female, or trans, most announcers are crap. There are a few that are pretty good, though. Mowins isn't as horrible as some make her out to be, but she's not one of the good ones for sure.

I want Michaels, Gifford, and Madden back for every NFL game. Make it happen.

I think this is me too. I like some, and don't even pay attention to the other 90%. I really like Al Michaels.

Caray had personality though. He was a loveable, harmless dumbass who was wholeheartedly invested in one team and you could feel the soul that he put into his broadcasting, whether he was good at it or not. Listen to his speech about how eventually the Cubs would win a Series and tell me he didn't have heart and class

Having him call games was like sitting in your living room with your faithful Cubby fan uncle Bob after he's had a few Old Styles and bullshitting about the game and baseball in general. He was the "comfort food" of sports broadcasting, and for better or worse he made people feel comfortable. He didn't have to be able to pronounce players' names because no one cared. People liked him.

Berh Mowins is the complete, 180° opposite of Harry Caray. Her voice is grating, she restates the obvious ad nauseum during games, and doesn't know the first thing about football, let alone the intricacies. She bounces around from stadium to stadium every week with people hoping they didn't draw her number. Just the fact that so many people hate her announcing speaks to the fact that she sucks. Do you hear people up in arms over Robin Roberts doing college basketball or tennis? No, because she was awesome at it.

And to give to the "reverse sexism" argument (flame away if you guys want), I'd argue that if she were a guy, there is zero chance she'd be in the booth at all after the completely ridiculous job she does of calling games. Although I do have to admit that Lee Corso still has a job, so maybe I'm wrong there.

For shits and giggles rattle off the names of the people that do play by play college football on TV. How many can you name without looking it up?

Have to say I'm glad we get a break from hearing The Nasaly One wonder out loud about a kicker's range when the team is down 7 with 30 seconds left in the 4th.

Sorry 'bout it, Clemson. You guys deserve better.

I guess I just don't really care who does the games. I try to pay attention to what's on the field.

That said, listening to Bill Curry gushing--over and over--about how Bob Sanders looks with his shirt off was a tad unnerving. Hearing Mowins get (seemingly) excited on a 3rd-and-four from a team's own 22-yard line is kinda weird.

Frankly, I just prefer BTN/B1G broadcasts/broadcast teams because they have a vested interest in showing all the "interest" stories, back stories, and special nuances. ESPN broadcasts hundreds of different teams each year. The BTN really only cares about 14 of them. Then again, Chef Ben doing BTN Tailgate featuring recipes with Velveeta and Rotel Tomatoes With Chiles--every week--was a twist I didn't expect, especially considering it featured a "chef"!

Exactly........So why single her out? She falls in line with 70-80% of people doing play by play. So she suppose to sound like Micheal Buffer doing games?

That's one problem, though. Too often you've had the broadcast "team" of Mowins and Galloway. That can never be a good thing. If you're going to use a Beth Mowins with a former player, make it a guy like Chris Martin, or even a Charles Davis type, who is animated but can give good perspective.

The only impression I have EVER gotten from Joey Galloway (as a broadcaster) is that he is nervous or just quiet. He shows very little emotion. I'm not asking for Mike Gundy or Paul Rhoads emotion. I'm not asking for the guy you hear on the old Hindenburg explosion footage. But it would be nice to know that the broadcast team members can occasionally get caught up in the moment of a spectacular, odd or game-changing play. At least Beth Mowins does that.

Remember this disaster on Monday Night Football?

I didn't single her out.
I was the one who singled her out. I'm not bashful to say that I think she sucks worsenthan most, if not all, announcers doing P5 games. Disagree with me if you want, neither of us can prove our point.

There may be some that don't like her simply because she's a woman. For me, I don't give a shit what gender she is (even if gender does appear to be fluid nowadays). What I do care about is how well she knows the game, the teams she is covering, her ability to convey the action on the field in a concise, easy-to-understand manner, and doesn't try to become the "show" herself.

Some of the stuff she does okay at, others she just plain is not good at. When you couple that with her practically unlistenable voice....it's a recipe for a crappy day of listening to the Hawks.

Yet there are male play-by-play guys who do college football and have some of the negative qualities you mention of whom nobody on here complains about. Many here may not think they have a bias against her but perhaps it's subconscious.

Love me some Gary Dolphin but he can be disjointed at times on the radio, butcher names and get stuff wrong from time to time. Never heard anyone complain about him though. I like listening to Dolph btw, but just pointing out the difference in attitude.

OMG! I forgot about that. Hilarious.

No offense, but people bitch about Dolphin on here all the time....including me.

I think there's sometimes a reverse bias going on where people who are sensitive to racism and sexism are looking for the times that it does happen and overlooking the numerous times it happens the other way. I can tell you there are many many people on here who have complained about Dolphin, about Jack Buck, about Gus Johnson, etc, etc. But it doesn't fit the "narrative" so it gets overlooked....
