Meaning of a Hawkeye Victory over Wisconsin

What if Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Northwestern all end up with 3 losses? Is the tiebreaker the record against those 4 teams or is it record in the West?

I would think the record against the West would have to come into play. How does that work incorporating crossover BIG losses? Say a team has two crossover losses and has a 5-3 record and another team has a 6-2 record with both losses being within division? Does the team with only 1 division loss trump the 6-2 team with two division losses?

Well it would depend on what happened their last game since there are 9 now. :)

Seriously tho, the overall conference record matters first.

If Iowa wins this game, I'll agree to take a Football 101 class from IckeHawk. That's how bad I want this. That is, if he can pry himself away from the Donald Trump rallies.

WOW! I want the Hawks to beat Bucky but I'm certainly not willing to sell my soul for it!

Michigan, on the other hand .... yea, still definitely NO WAY!

Much has been made of losses this season. But what about a win vs. Wisconsin? If the Hawks can beat Wisconsin Saturday, what would it mean for the program and the season?

It looked like the offensive line issues were figured out last Saturday against Purdue. If it continues, that would go a long way to beating Wisconsin Saturday. Beating Wisky would put Iowa in second place in the West, barring a disaster at Purdue for Nebraska, and leave them in control of their own destiny. However, despite the close losses Wisconsin sustained at Michigan and vs. Ohio State, a loss to Iowa would finally drop them in the polls and a win by Iowa would net a ranking around 20 - 23 at best.

Wisconsin would be left with a final chance to improve their ranking at home vs. Nebraska. I believe, if the Hawkeyes win, that the win would not be enough of a positive result to give fans and the media confidence of Iowa competing with Michigan and Penn State in the upcoming weeks. In other words, a win vs. a top ten Wisconsin team would fix the pall of negativity surrounding the program currently -- the feeling that Iowa wasn't actually good last year during the undefeated regular season run and the constant expectation of poor performance on gameday that has arisen after the home loss to NDSU.

Expectations were high this season, and rightly so with what Iowa was returning. It would take wins against Wisconsin, Penn State, and Nebraska/Michigan to get back the positive buzz with which the season began. That's a tall order for this Hawkeye team.
I think there are 2 games we cannot win Wisconsin and Michigan

The other 3 are possible to win or lose but with a bad pass D and generally no pass rush Tommy Armstrong could through for 400 yds against us. So, that said 1 or 2 wins are remaining on our schedule.

This is from conference website

(b) If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 6 will be followed until a determination is made. If only two teams remain tied after any step, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative.
1. The records of the three tied teams will be compared against each other.
2. The records of the three tied teams will be compared within their division.
3. The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of finish (4, 5, 6, and 7).
4. The records of the three teams will be compared against all common conference opponents.
5. The team with the best overall winning percentage [excluding exempted games] shall be the representative.
6. The representative will be chosen by random draw.

^^^^If that doesn't work then it's rock, paper, scissors^^^^ or we meet at dead man's curve, midnight, or are ya chicken? We're racing for pinks man...whatever it takes to win the West...;)

It would be a surprising win; somewhat of a legitimizing win. However, the legitimizing would be as much for Iowa - better than perceived the last month - as it would be against Wiscy - tough but not quite able to get over.

I'd be thrilled but it would merely mean that 7, rather than 6, wins are likely.

If we can beat Wisconsin, we can beat Penn State, Illinois, and nebby. I'm not sure we do any of those things, but Wisky is the best team in that group.

Find a way on Saturday. Find a way.

Cancel out the Northwestern Loss! Nothing Cancels out the NDSU Loss!!!

Is not that it cancels it out, but that it changes the way I feel about the season. I'd like to leave it feeling like Iowa beat some salty teams. that would take beating Wisconsin and Nebraska/Michigan.

I think overall big picture with KF, the NDSU loss is another black eye on his tenure and on the program.

IF we were to win the West and make it back to the championship game, I can be happier about the season as it means we did improve and accomplished one of the goals of the season. I still cannot stand KF the coach, his schemes, his lack of game day prep and adjustments, but we would have won the west.

For a program like Iowa, I think winning the West should be the lowest bar set.

So in the scenario of us beating Wisconsin and Nebraska but ending in a 3 or 4 way tie, we would win all tiebreakers.

I don't care about the non-conference games. Only the conference games matter. A 7-2 or 6-3 record might win the West, but we need to beat Wisconsin

Not for me. They only think that truly cancels that loss and/or the NW loss is beating Wisc and nebby and heading to Indy. We win the West, I will care less about the NDSU or NW loss, as I had zero delusions of CFP anyway.

I think a little differently here. I think the better this season is, the more I will hate that loss. If we lose out, or close to it, I won't care about that loss at all. 10-2 will have me remembering that stupid loss forever. 6-6 will make me forget all about it. Here's to hoping I remember it forever.

Forever's an awfully long time.

Maybe "until the next hard to believe, embarrassing loss"?

I would liken it the the '02 ISU game if we went 10-2 this year.

I don't know about that. Seneca and company were a pretty capable team, and the Hawks were in control until the 2nd half mistakes cost them. At the time, that was one that got away, but not a huge upset. Definitely not embarrassing nationally.

I was more talking about losing to a team when we looked like the better team and looking back with hindsight at what the loss cost us. The NDSU loss wasn't embarrassing nationally tho. All the talk after the game was about how good they were. I never heard anything negative about Iowa after that loss.

I can see this as well. If we would catch fire and go 8-4 or better, the idea of "what if" will be hard to not avoid.
