McCarney-Iowa Postgame.

How he could be fired then this current nut job is still there is crazy. The difference is Polly didn't hire Mac and was desperate to show how smart he is by hiring his own guy and 2nd Mac's success had them convinced they could take another step. Even though all the success they had was due to Mac in the first place.

I liked Dan. Hated him for always beating Iowa but liked him because he seemed to really care. I have been telling my ISU friends that Rhoads is a phony since 2012. He showed all the signs of a bad coach since day one but they were blinded by the few good wins he had and one bowl win (with Chiz and macs players). They see the light now and the light no longer looks so bright...

What a tough SOB, stroke, vision loss, and more but when he came out the tunnel all you saw was passion and determination. Iowa St. betrayed a loyal decent man for what, some "hot" assistant who jumped the first ship out for a better job. Sometimes you deserve what you get. There's probable a lesson there somewhere for us Hawkeye fans.

Dan McCarney got a raw deal at ISU. Yeah, maybe he took them as far as he could, but he also did more than any coach in their history, at a place where it's darn near impossible to win in football. So you're gonna fire him? OK.

I got sick of losing to him, but I respect him for being a solid coach and a good guy. Plus, formerly a Hawkeye, so it's impossible for me to not like him.

Great guy whom I have a ton of respect for. I think we're seeing right now how big of a challenge it is to win at ISU. He should be commended for what he did there instead of chastised for what he couldn't do. Hindsight is always 20/20. It's an uphill battle just to field a competitive team in Ames. To put together a decent team once every few years there is an accomplishment in itself.

I don't think Pollard is going to have a whole lot of options if he decides to start a coaching search. It's hard to say without seeing a list of people who would be interested, but if I were an ISU fan I'd be happy to welcome Mac back with open arms.

I like when he stated, paraphrase .... "This is a top 20 football team. I know what they look like. I've coached against many of Ferentz's Iowa top 20 teams and this is what they look like. That is a good football team."

I think he said top 25, which is what both polls recognize. But, yeah, nice to hear.

I was out for dinner at a fine establishment in Des Moines several years ago, one of my gifts was a college football almanac; McCarney happened to be at the same restaurant, my bro-in-law who's an ISU grad told McCarney that I was a huge Hawk fan, so McCarney came over and signed the book with a "go Cyclones" note, we all LOL'd. Then he grinned as he handed it back to me and quietly said, "hey...once a Hawk, always a Hawk."

He was a choking place kicker away of taking that sh!tbag school to a Big 12 Championship game.

And he beat Alabama(!) in a bowl game, even if the blind jagoff refs say he didn't. I was in San Antonio (2001 Alamo bowl) watching that game in a sports bar on the Riverwalk, and that kick was good.

PJ Fleck would be awesome in Ames. Row the boat baby. I think you'd get a lot of hungry young guys for $1M a year. That's still $$$$$$.

In fairness to JP (and Lord knows the last thing I EVER want to do is be fair to that Clown), avg attendance in Mac's last 2 years was right around 35k. You can't support a Power 5 conference athletic department with your football team avg'ing those few fans. And the only thing keeping Paw employed there right now is the fact that they are still bringing in north of 52k in attendance. But with facility bond payments needing to be paid on all the debt ISU has taken out to refurbish their facilities, they can't afford to go back to south of 50k again. When that happens, regardless of the buyout, Paw is toast.

Nice comments from a guy who loves being a Hawkeye. ISU, Wisconsin, No. Texas. Those are just jobs. Being a Hawkeye is in the blood.

Kewl story, brah.

No, seriously, it is.

Fleck has a better gig at Western Michigan. He isnt leaving Kalamazoo for Ames. He'll leave Kalamazoo for somewhere, but it wont be Ames.

Maybe it's revisionist history, but I think ISU would be in so much better shape today if DM was still the coach.

Agreed. It is clear that Rhodes is simply not the answer; too much smoke and mirrors, too much big talk and antics, too little ability to bring in talent or to use it effectively on the field.

I will add that if ISU had kept Danny Mac, the rise in competitiveness of that program either would have made Ferentz become a better coach or resulted in a coaching change in Iowa City.

Agreed. PJ Fleck is a name a lot of people have mentioned. Guess what that means? It means he's a guy who will have MUCH better opportunities offered to him than ISU. Unless ISU is willing to pay a lot more money than other programs there's no way they'd land him or anyone else like him. Ames is not an attractice destination for coaching football. It just isn't. I'd list all the reasons why, but everyone already knows them.

PJ Fleck coming to ISU is a pipe dream.

clown fans are delusional as to who they think will come to ames to coach - i had one tell me saturday - and he was serious - that isu should hire charlie strong after he gets fired from texas...

yeah - it's pretty frustrating - we have a great coach - but he doesn't yell and scream (so doesn't have passion, is the logic) whereas you see these guys who yell and scream, get on their knees in front of the refs, take a knee on the sideline to argue a call where the call was correct the whole time - embarrassing - - i think many times these guys who yell and sceam are lacking big time in areas that are so much more important - easiest case in point - paw. so happy we have a coach with the demeanor we do.
