McCall could be back this year

Q. Have you thought about taking the red shirt off Canzeri at this point?
COACH FERENTZ: I think anybody that can help us right now is going to play. There is a chance Mika’il could be back at the end of the year. That’s possible. If he can, we’re trying to win today, so that’s possible.
We’ll just let all the backs practice this week and see who does the best. We’ll take it off anybody. We’d have taken it off Saturday if we had to.

I think it would have to be a uniuque situation for that to happen. Probably similar to the year when we lost everyone and Sam Brownlee ended up the man. He's going to miss at least two months and I don't think it's worth taking the RS off unless we need him to start and he can really help us.

If we get adequate performance out of white, and ultimately Johnson, then I think he's done.

the only way I see this is if everyone else was dinged up and the Hawks were in position to win the Big Ten Legends.

I'm glad to hear Ferentz say that. It gives me confidence that they think he'll heal well, but I don't see it either. If we get to a big bowl game with players like White, Johnson, and Canzeri running the ball, they must be doing a good job.

If he is medically cleared to play, they might as well play him. If the doctor clears him by the end of the season, he won't be eligible for the medical hardship redshirt, so not playing him would be a waste of his eligibility. That being said, if he can't go at 100%, I think McCall and the staff will be able to convince the doctor's that its in the best interest of everyone involved to not clear him for participation.

Seems ridiculous. Why wouldn't they take a medical redshirt?

The injury has to keep the player out the whole season. If McCall is cleared to play by the Iowa medical staff by the Nov. 26 game, he isn't eligible for a "medical hardship waiver." Also, he is not eligible to be redshirted because he has played.

If Iowa can't get another year of eligiblity, why hold him out.

Even if he miraculously is healthy in 4 weeks, he will have been off his leg for 4 weeks. Its not like its going to be "game ready" to run on it.

screw the red shirt. If he can play against Nebby or a bowl game lets use him. Play for now, not 4 years from now.
