McCall back by Indiana (at least Minnesota)?

If the kid can play he needs to play. There is 1 reason that this is a non-debatable point.

If he is medically cleared to play, and he will be. He can NOT get a medical red shirt even if he doesn't play one more down this year. You have to play him or it is a complete waste of a year.

Plus we need him to be more experienced for next season.

Is the point to find a guy who contributed in a major way for four years? Or to find a guy who redshirted and contributed as a 5th year player?

AY is a guy that the redshirt ended up having value, which I think is the real point.

The question posed was "...can you recall an Iowa running back redshirting his freshman season, and then playing four consecutive years after that? Meaning no significant injuries, grade issues, getting kicked off the team, transferring, etc.?"

The real point to the question is elaborating on the fact how hard it is to keep a RB in the program for five years and get get four years of playing production out of said RB. Per the lack of answers to said question it's nearly impossible.

Sam Brownlee, Paki Omeara.....;)

I hope he redshirts because if he doesn't live up to the standards you all set for him after 5 carries you will tear him apart keyboard style.

If you couldn't tell that he was a good back by those 5 carries and the fact that he played in the first game as a freshman (Kirk putting him in and also talking him up, along with teammates), then I don't know what to tell you. He showed burst, speed, agility...

No one said he was the best back in the B10, but I still think he is our best back.

Iowa could really use McCall. Clearly,KF was heavily counting on him to give our offense some pizazz, til he got hurt. If he could be back by the Michigan or MSU game,he still could help us in 5-6 games counting Big Ten title game and a bowl.
Thats half a season. And it would have him ready for next year with Marcus and we would have a tandem of backs for maybe the next 2 years with Canzeri in the wings and bullock in the slot.

Get him in there as soon as he can go...could be a difference maker in the cooler, more running part of the season.

I like your optimism

I don't understand why people are excited to redshirt players? The kid was a highly recruited RB. I don't care if he can only play in 3 games this season, if he's good enough to be on the field, get him on the field!

Until he gets hurt again and a wave of "why did this staff rush McCall back so soon?" threads wash over us.

It's the half-way thing that drives people nuts.

You decide whether to redshirt a Freshman based on his readiness and the team's needs. If you choose redshirt, fine. You stick with it. Of course injuries happen and plans can change. But You only pull the redshirt off if YOU'RE GOING TO PUT HIM ON THE FIELD. You don't give up his redshirt for a few meaningless reps in mopup duty against LaMonroe. YOU PLAY HIM!

Managing young personnel and clock management are two things that Ferentz never quite seems to get a handle on. He's indecisive.

Its not half-way. Look at Coker last year. He had 10 carries in mop-up against Ball State, then went three games without a carry. He got a bunch vs. MSU, then the ARob injury forced him into action. His number of carries was likely to grow towards the end of the season, though certainly not as much as it did after ARob was injured.

You are foolish if you thought Canzeri was going to get a lot of carries in his next game at PSU. I hoped that he would return kicks and get a look at RB. He returned kicks, but did not get in the game at RB. I would wager we'll see a very small bit of him at RB against NW this week. Then a little bit more the week after, etc.

Just because you don't agree with their plan doesn't make it indecisive.

No, he cannot.

Accoring to this, McCall can get an additional year:

Medical Hardship Waiver

If a student-athlete suffers a season-ending injury or illness after competing in a limited amount of competition during a particular academic year, he/she may qualify for a medical hardship waiver which would allow him/her an additional season of competition during the five-year period of eligibility. To qualify for a medical hardship:

(a) the student-athlete’s injury or illness must occur in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition or subsequent to the first day of classes in the student-athlete’s senior year in high school;

(b) the injury or illness must occur prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport and must result in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season; and

(c) the injury or illness must occur when the student-athlete has not participated in more than two contests/dates of competition or 20% of the institution’s scheduled contests/dates of competition in his/her sport (whichever number is greater).

You're certainly right about one thing. I was foolish to think KFz might actually play him. Gotta be careful...gotta play "not to lose"....don't be toooo risky. Let's just keep doing the same thing against a defense that clearly has our number.

Did you just skip over B?

He played, he got hurt, he could be back by week 8 or 9. That is not the entire season...not even close. If he is already practicing, I can guarantee you 100% that there is no way in hell he gets a medical redshirt.

EDIT: Oh, you since deleted your post.....

No. But that's simple enough. If a team Doctor says he's not 100% or he reports that he's not 100% healthy...done deal. Obviously if he comes back healthy and runs the ball...he's not eligible for a medical redshirt. But guys have made it back to practice, yet never fully recovered enough to make it to the field.

This rule has always seemed a bit subjective in its application, so I could be mistaken. But that's my take on it.

Its how Kirk rolls, and its not surprising how it went down. I do agree with the frustration.

Lots of folks were predicting insane things like nearly 10 carries for Canzeri at PSU. I was hoping for 2, and thought that was optimistic.

I will be disappointed if Canzeri doesn't see a snap at RB this week. Will more likely see Brad Rogers there, since he appears to have the "we trust this guy" stamp of approval.
