McCall back by Indiana (at least Minnesota)?

Even if Canzeri only provides a decent kick off return threat for the rest of the year, I'm still alright with the decision to pull the redshirt. If he's ready to play, why save him?

Plus, at the rate running backs go down, who is to say Coker won't get injured at some point? Do we really want to stake all our running back position on Jason White, a guy with a broken leg, and another guy who hasn't quite made it back from an ACL injury? That's why you play the two true freshmen. (Nobody seems too concerned that Bullock's redshirt was pulled for whatever reason)

I think I brought this up in a thread a few weeks ago, but since Ferentz has taken over, can you recall an Iowa running back redshirting his freshman season, and then playing four consecutive years after that? Meaning no significant injuries, grade issues, getting kicked off the team, transferring, etc.?

Who was the last one? Ladell Betts?

Pretty incredible when you think about it. In other words, if a true freshman is ready to play at running back, even in a very limited role or primarily on special teams, it is worth playing him.

Odds are he'll use that redshirt later for injury, grades or a transfer, or decide to quit anyway.

I hope he redshirts because if he doesn't live up to the standards you all set for him after 5 carries you will tear him apart keyboard style.

Good news indeed, but I wonder if it would be better to save him for next year, unless he is Completely healed. If he does play, it would help tremendously. I would expect to see Canzeri and Bullock on Saturday. We could use Canzeri whether or not McCall returns. We must add more pizazz to the running game to help JV get back to form. NW goes down Saturday Night, or else....

Pretty much nailed it.

Albert Young is one. And he only redshirted his first year due to a fall camp injury, IIRC.

But, in general, I agree that we might as well play the RB, given the luck we've had.

Name me the prominent four year contributing running backs in the Big Ten over the past decade. There are less than you think

Thats makes pulling Canzeri's redshirt incredibly stupid.

If Canzeri and McCall can help Iowa win in November in different capacities then pulling Canzeri's red shirt is worth it.

We need all the talented athletes we can get on the field of play in November. Wear the opposition down with speed and power.

Play them now. No guarantee either one will be on the team next year or beyond.

Mike Hart is the only one that immediately springs to mind for me. I suppose I'd take a stab and say Javon Ringer, too. After that, the only other guys that come to mind are Barber/Maroney, but I'm pretty sure they both left after their junior seasons.

Iowa could really use McCall. Clearly,KF was heavily counting on him to give our offense some pizazz, til he got hurt. If he could be back by the Michigan or MSU game,he still could help us in 5-6 games counting Big Ten title game and a bowl.
Thats half a season. And it would have him ready for next year with Marcus and we would have a tandem of backs for maybe the next 2 years with Canzeri in the wings and bullock in the slot.

Get him in there as soon as he can go...could be a difference maker in the cooler, more running part of the season.

The guy Mike Hart replaced at Michigan - Chris Perry - also played four years. Those four year backs are pretty rare let alone to have them back to back for the same team.

Can't even include AY as he was hurt in '03 (broken leg) and '04 (ACL) and only played three years after that.

Is the point to find a guy who contributed in a major way for four years? Or to find a guy who redshirted and contributed as a 5th year player?

AY is a guy that the redshirt ended up having value, which I think is the real point.

If a freshman can help you win a football game then KF should play him. It is pretty simple, you put your best team out on the field every game day. Shonn Greene left Iowa with a year of eligibility remaining, does it really matter he played sparingly as a true freshman? As others have mentioned if Canzeri or McCall are that good of running backs then the chance of them staying at Iowa for 5 years is slim. If they can contribute and help the team win then let them play. There will always be another running back prospect to step in once these 2 use up their eligibility.
