McCaffery's Quote on Melsahn

I would like to see Mel return to last years form as much as anyone, but if he isn't going to give good effort out on the floor, he needs to sit.

I agree that basabe has lacked effort. The problem I have is I see him come in and get in great position for an easy bucket. OUR GUARDS CANT FIND HIM. I think it's a combo. He then gives up, which is unacceptable. I think Gessel will help

As a former front line player, I can't believe that guards missing Mel when he is open is something he hasn't dealt with his entire life.

I agree, it’s on Mel. Everyone talks about how he has got to get going early to be effective. Well our guards will have to find him in good position then, early. If not, we are going to get what we have seen….sucks.

Having guys transfer when going thru a slump is not the answer, gang.
Mel is only about 40% of the way thru his career at Iowa,so he has a lot more ball to play at Iowa. Anyone deluding themself to think that the skinny frosh next year will not need help on the frontline from Mel and McCabe are offbase. Never count on too much from frosh big men unless they are top 15 players like Zeller.

I don't understand the obsession with people thinking Mel will transfer. Early on in the season when he was struggling, all people talked about was Mel transferring. Then when he averaged 13 and 10 in December, Mel was back and was a key piece to the rebuilding process. Now that he's struggled for the last month, it's back to the transfer talk. Give it a rest, folks.

Look at recent history. Transfering from Iowa basketball appeared to be the norm. I think until this trend ends that it will continue to be on the mind of a lot of fans.

I'm not sure how to explains Mel's lack of hustle. He's not moving well with or without the ball. There's no hustle. I did see him getting pretty jazzy on the bench last night after the Aaron White put back dunk. So he seemed into cheering on his teammates. To me he looks like a guy who's not sure where he fits into a system that doesn't need to solely rely on him creating offense. Not that were overly loaded with offensive weapons, but the addition of White with McCabe and Marble's improved production maybe he's not sure where he falls into the equation? Maybe this is causing the kid to be in a little sophomore slump like mentioned.

If Basabe can't get his mind right being gifted a starting spot all season, I have 0 confidence he can contribute as a bench guy behind others next season. Watching him sit on the bench and sulk while others are waving towels, clapping, yelling etc., is tough to stomach.

I find it refreshing when coaches are asked questions and they actually give a response. As opposed to Ferentz's canned vanilla answers.
If a player isn't giving effort, then there is nothing wrong with saying so.

There have been two coaches I was sad to see leave: George Raveling and Steve Alford.
Steve Alford is the worst thing to happen to Iowa BB..It's as if he was a Trojan horse sent here to destroy our program from within. I loved me some Steve too when he got here, but became soured on him after year 5.

You have Steve ahead of Lute???????? Really?????? I cannot think of one thing Steve did better than Lute!!!

I didn't say that. I was 8 at the time so I barely remember it. Lute obviously was the better coach. I was 8 so I wasn't sad.

I believe that is the only real way to get out of a slump.

Melsahn needs to talk with Mark Grace about slumpbusters.

On a serious note....I wonder if Melsahn's tryout for the USA team last summer ended up hurting his confidence.
