McCaffery's Quote on Melsahn

He was asked about his effort, and he gave the same answer every Iowa fan paying attention would give.

Mel's effort has been disappointing. There is no way to sugarcoat it.

I hope Mel flips the attitude switch...if he doesn't, the last thing I am worried about is what he is going to do after this season. I'd rather he be on the team with the kind of effort he gave last year. We know what he is capable of, but I just don't have much time for people that don't give their all when they have amazing opportunities, in any walk of life.

Amen to that.

When Alford said something like that, a lot of people said he was a horrible human being, throwing kids under the bus.

Yes, they did that after about 5 years of doing it, and Steve doing it to deflect his other shortcomings.

OK4P, we need a new category for next year's awards.

LIFETIME STEVE ALFORD APOLOGIST: glidinghawk

I never cared when Alford did it and I don't really care if Fran calls out players either.

What's he supposed to say "yeah great effort tonight from Melsahn. He really did a good job making sure the water bottles were full for during timeouts after I benched him." People always say he's a straight shooter and it doesn't take John Wooden to figure out Mel wasn't trying to his full potential tonight.

I just don't know how invested into the team Melsahn is. I don't have any inside info. but he doesn't seem like he's having much fun and he is far from home and family. I sure hope he doesn't transfer.

Why? What is he giving this team at this point? McCabe has had two 20 point games in a row and this guy has done nothing. This has been going on all season. Transfer. He has a serious attitude problem and that is obvious.

Spot on ... Melsahn simply seems like he is not enjoying himself on the court. Emotion is a big part of it and you want to see your players inspired and fired up. Melsahn simply does not seem inspired or happy on the court ...

Yeah he has an attitude problem it would appear, but I believe it's more him being dissapointed in himself and not having the maturity right now to fight through those confidence issues. This will be a great test to see how good of a coach McCaffery is. Great coaches have the ability to take young men with esteem and attitude issues and by the time they're upper classmen they have matured and are reaching their true potential. That's the mark of a great coach, teacher, and father figure which McCaffery must be to his players in order to turn this around.

A great coach can only do so much. The heart of the player is what I question. See McCabe and what Fran has got out of him.

When Alford said something like that, a lot of people said he was a horrible human being, throwing kids under the bus.

Alford, as mentioned, did it for 5 years (often to avoid addressing his own shortcomings). He also seemed to leap to that first. Fran has (IMO) made excuses for Basabe to the press all season. I think he's bent over backwards to avoid calling him out in public.

Fans always exaggerated SA's criticism of players. He was asked how certain guys did, just like Fran is, and he would tell his assessment, just like Fran. I was never bothered by it,with either coach. Lick did it also. All coaches do. We just have some fans on here with hardons for SA so they act like he was different.

I never could figure out what coaches are supposed to say to remain credible when the fans all saw the performance of players. Lie? That does not work. Fans see the game,ya know?

I have said this before, but I think Basabe is the type of player that needs to start off the game hot. If he doesn't make some early buckets or make some plays to get his confidence up... He struggles the rest of the game. I think one of the announcers also made a comment along the lines "He is a confidence player. If he struggles early... He will struggle the rest of the game."

Some think it is an attitude problem and maybe they are right, but I don't think this is a case of Basabe thinking he is better than anyone else or is entitled.

I think he has lost all confidence in himself and he is taking himself out of the game. Until he gets his confidence back, I think he will continue to be in this slump. He is capable of playing at a much higher level than he is right now and I think we can all agree on that. Some might poke fun at Basabe's "swag," but I think the problem is that he has none right now and he is a much better player when he is playing with some swagger out there.

I am not trying to make light of serious problems or suggest any of these things are true, but Melsahn's performance has been such, that as a coach, I would have tried numerous heart to hearts where I would have asked him everything from if he's been checked for mono, been dumped by a girlfriend, experimenting with drugs, feeling deeply depressed...and I am sure Fran has explored some of these issues.

Maybe he just has an attitude, but that doesn't seem to fit with what we saw last year. Maybe he's going through ups and downs and inconsistencies, like any college kid, but sure seems like something is off.

Those things are definitely possible. He definitely seems off. Hopefully everything works out and he gets back to playing at the level he is capable of.

Basabe owes Fran a lot more effort than he's giving right now. Without McCaffery, Melsahn would be most likely playing for a 9-10 Sienna team. And the way he's playing he wouldn't even deserve to play there. I hope he's benched indefinitely until he learns some hustle. Maybe McCabe can show him what that's like.

I'd wager that if Fran and Basabe were both at Sienna right now, they wouldn't be 9-10.

That's probably true. My point being though, if he doesn't want to put forth the effort required of a Big Ten player he can go elsewhere, as we saw last year he has the talent but something is definitely amiss this season.

Q: Melsahn - 13 minutes, no shot.

MCCAFFERY: "No effort. No effort from him tonight. Disappointing"

Hardly shocking news to anyone who watched the game. I think right after that quote he said the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
