McCaffery Statement on Brust

“Ben has asked for a release from his National Letter of Intent. He is still very much interested in the University of Iowa. Ben would like us, as a new coaching staff, to pursue and re-recruit him. I have had encouraging conversations with Ben and enjoyed meeting him and his family. We look forward to getting to know Ben more in the recruiting process.â€￾

Let's hope so.
Another lost player could turn this hire sour.

It shouldn't. When we make a change.....any change the first step is usually a step backwards. As a fan base we really need to learn to accept that. I have a feeling that no matter what Ben's decision, things will move forward from here a little more quickly than we have been used to.

Ya know with this now the second recruit bailing I really wonder if Lick and his staff did a better job selling themselves as coaches instead of selling the University.

This is not a knock on Brust, but I'd like to get some athletic players...instead of loading up with a bunch of shooting guards/small forwards. I'd like to see some alley-oop dunks similar to Siena's youtube highlight video.

Brust hasn't been seen wearing Lickliter gear, he was wearing Hawkeye gear, I believe.

These kids commit to schools mainly because of the coaching staff. It's not like many 18 year olds know what they want to study. How do you sell the University of Iowa to an out of state kid? They may view Iowa on par with other schools they visited in terms of the vibe they get around campus and in the city. They probably commited to Iowa becaue they had a great connection with the person that recruited them and the rest of the staff. I guess if there is a kid who absolutely wants to get into med school you can sell him on the school.

Who knows, I doubt any coach really sells the kids on the school.

Both Larson and Brust have had their share of athletic dunks in HS and the AAU circuit. Both are pretty athletic.

Rdubbs could be right. I don't see either either recruit resigning with Iowa, but if they did I think fans will remember and warm up much quicker to McCabe and Marble now. To open recruiting up, shows a lack of confidence in the U of I program and new staff. After all the fans and school have been through, it is a bit of a slap, fair or unfair.

Openning the recruiting up also means Iowa staff can offer spots to others as well. It does work both ways and there is not a lot of time.

Marble twittered today that his stock is rising.

Possibly a comment on his bball stock as far as other schools are concerned?

All is well that end well. Remember our future star LT, did he commit/de-commit several times (verbally w/out actually signing)? As long as they are here when things kick up in the fall, no one will care if they had reservations with the coaching change. I think we need them both to come back BADLY. I was really looking forward to seeing both of them in the black and gold.

Well top 2 recruits are probably going elsewhere now...

Looks to me like fran has failed at keeping the best players/recruits at Iowa so far.

I disagree. The fact that both players are open to being re-recruited implies to me that Fran has not tried overly hard to persuade them to stay signed. What I mean is, if both of these players have expressed doubts, (which they obviously have) then he has probably told them that he wants them to be comfortable in their decision and fully committed. If that means opening up your recruitment, so be it.

And maybe that assumption is just me with my blinders on, but if it is the case, I have a lot of respect for it. It would definitely be putting the interest of the student athlete ahead of his own and reminds me of something a certain football coach would do.
