McCaffery says Kyle Meyer ‘really a good kid’

Re: McCaffery says Kyle Meyer really a good kid

How did that turn out? IMHO cops that abuse the law that way should be fired if not jailed themselves. Absolutely disgusting abuse of power.
Ticket, parents had to come get me as I was under 18, suspended for final 3 track meets including conference and districts, and 40 hours of community service. Oh and had to go to an AA meeting. All that just for being at a party, hadn't started drinking yet.

You can feel the punishment, but you can't commit the sin.

Anyway, back on topic. Anybody a little intimidated by Fran's statement? I'd not like to be Meyer right now.

That's what I was thinking, too, TM. "We won't be hearing any more on the negative side from Kyle" sounds to me like "he'll be spending the better part of the first three weeks of practice running stairs."

You don't have to be legally drunk, it's up to the cop. I once had a girlfriend who hadn't drank a beer, was pushed down joking around on the way to the bar as a cop drove by. He stopped immediately gave her a ticket and took her downtown. In the description he said her eyes were bloodshot and she smelled of beer. We tried to have the cop breathalyze her, but her refused and told us to back away. When we tried to fight it later on, they told us they would take the cops word over ours. I know, nice story bro.

That happen in Iowa City? I had a buddy have just about the same thing. He had one beer a couple hours earlier, so there may have been a slight trace. Either way, no breathalyzer. Went to jail. WTF?
Another good IC cop story, my roommate gave us a ride home from the bar. He had a drink before taking us home. The cop pulled us over he blew over. They tested him again, he blew under. The cop still gave him a public intox. He was a sober as could be...
I could go on, but that's enough. What did these arrests do? What did they accomplish? Nothing.

People who think 19 year olds should be allowed to legally drink haven't spent enough time with 19 year olds.

But they should be allowed to vote and or be killed/mutilated or kill/mutilate others at the age of 19?

This too.

Countries like Germany allow drinking at age 16. And most of them drink responsibly, they don't get wasted like so many do here.

American teenagers are rebellious, by and large, to some degree. Some choose to use alcohol to rebel. Naturally, things get taken to the extreme with teenagers. But what if drinking WASN'T rebellious for an 18-20 year old? I'd bet it would lose some of its allure. Teenagers tend to gravitate towards forbidden fruit. Tell them they can't have it, and it's all they want.

Alcohol, like sex, has been built up and mystified in this country pretty much forever. It has been demonized and made taboo. Which, as Tork points out, attracts people (especially young, naive people) like a light attracts moths.
If this country was capable of collectively demystifying and normalizing alcohol (and sex), we wouldn't have anywhere near the amount and type of problems with it that have been present historically.
It's a cryin' shame.

Kyle has a drink or two and falls asleep in the dorm bathroom, Big Deal. This should inspire Myer to be more bold and aggressive on the court......

Yep, puritanical prohibition America is doing it wrong.

I would think that in a free country one should be able to act how they want provided they aren't yelling fire in a crowded theatre.
