McCaffery says Kyle Meyer ‘really a good kid’

That happen in Iowa City? I had a buddy have just about the same thing. He had one beer a couple hours earlier, so there may have been a slight trace. Either way, no breathalyzer. Went to jail. WTF?
Another good IC cop story, my roommate gave us a ride home from the bar. He had a drink before taking us home. The cop pulled us over he blew over. They tested him again, he blew under. The cop still gave him a public intox. He was a sober as could be...
I could go on, but that's enough. What did these arrests do? What did they accomplish? Nothing.

Sure it did. It helped those cops meet their quotas.

Re:McCaffery says Kyle Meyer ‘really a good kid’

I grew up in IC and chose not to pursue my higher education there for several reasons and the bar/drinking/public intox/DUI were a major reason. I can remember after every home football game opening the DI and reading at least 3 pages of MIP/DUI/Public intox arrests. The system is obviously set up to arrest college students for alcohol related offenses and this is one reason I tend to advise people against the U of I.

I love the Hawks, I bleed black and gold, I was born at the U if I hospital and graduated from City High but my love is mostly for hawkeye sports. The city of Iowa City is over rated and the idea that it is a mini Chicago or Manhattan is only perpetuated by those who have never lived in any substantial urban areas.

The truth is the City of Iowa City depends on revenue from all of those DUI, public intox, etc alcohol related offenses to pay their bills so these things will never change.

Just be careful when you get plastered in Iowa City. If under 21 be careful about being anyplace where there's alcohol, it sucks...

This too.

Countries like Germany allow drinking at age 16. And most of them drink responsibly, they don't get wasted like so many do here.

American teenagers are rebellious, by and large, to some degree. Some choose to use alcohol to rebel. Naturally, things get taken to the extreme with teenagers. But what if drinking WASN'T rebellious for an 18-20 year old? I'd bet it would lose some of its allure. Teenagers tend to gravitate towards forbidden fruit. Tell them they can't have it, and it's all they want.

You got that right.

Along with that when is being busted in an U of IOWA Dormitory... frickin' public intox? When was the last time any one can get in a dorm without a card and/or proper ID? The Iowa dorms AAAAAAAAAARE NOT public places. How is it public INTOX?

:Lower the drinking age to 18. Iowa students are ADULTS Lower the DRINKING AGE NOW!!!! While you are at LEGALIZE POT... NOW!!

Re: McCaffery says Kyle Meyer ‘really a good kid’

People who think 19 year olds should be allowed to legally drink haven't spent enough time with 19 year olds.

You have no idea or are being an idiot?

Which is it?

BTW do you think those same 18/19 year olds should vote? drafted and die for our country? have sex? marry? have a kid? sign a contract? perform in a porn video?

Pleeeze

LOLERZ! There are people that say this?

While we're at it, I think Ames is a mini Venice.

If you don't think people in Germany get wasted....baaaaa nevermind.

3 years in IC, wasted most days, never a ticket. It isn't hard.

It really isn't. In fact, There were some times when I was stumbling, destructive, yelling at the night drunk and never so much as saw a cop. If you get pinched, you either have to be really stupid or really unlucky.

I'm not sure if this is how it works, but I'm guessing it was UIPD that made the arrest, which probably gives them the authority to give a citation like that in the dorms. Also, the bathrooms are shared by the entire floor. It's not like they found him in his room.

I didn't say no one gets wasted in Germany, or other European countries that have a lower drinking age. But it's not as big of a problem as it is here.

It was the UIPD who arrested him, and common areas in dorms have always been, legally speaking, public areas. A similar situation would be that if a guy lived in a locked-down apartment building, but passed out drunk in the hallway in front of his door, that would be considered a public area.

Agreed. Don't get into fights, and don't pass out. Congratulations, you just made it to next weekend.

You can drink under 21 in Wisconsin. It's one of the redeeming qualities of the state.

You can legally drink in Iowa under the age of 21 for medical purposes and on non-alcohol selling private property with parental consent.

Alcohol, like sex, has been built up and mystified in this country pretty much forever. It has been demonized and made taboo. Which, as Tork points out, attracts people (especially young, naive people) like a light attracts moths.
If this country was capable of collectively demystifying and normalizing alcohol (and sex), we wouldn't have anywhere near the amount and type of problems with it that have been present historically.
It's a cryin' shame.
