McCaffery: "Maybe I need to back off a little bit"

I think the real reason they use that style of press is just to drain some time off the shot clock. It gives the other team less time to work their half court set. Any turn overs are just a bonus.
This is correct. It is a soft 3/4 court 2-2-1 zone press. It doesn't trap. Just slows the other team, makes them burn shot clock, and captializes on any lazy passes or poor judegement (10 second violations).

Bottom line...this staff needs to apologize to this team...clear the air. Say we have played too many guys this year. We have not let some of you play through you mistakes. We now have a team of guys playing afraid to make mistakes, which leads to hesitancy. As a staff we will allow you to play the game with the type of emotion necessary to win. You will be allowed freedom to succeed! However, you will be held accountable and playing time is EARNED. Now lets get back to winning

I don't feel that the staff need to appoligize to anyone nor do the players need to appoligize to the staff or the fan base. Both staff and players need to put the past behind them and move forward. Iowa's nonscripted style of play is great the first 30 minutes of the game, but as the game gets closer to the final whistle and games come down to possessions we run into problems, IMO because the defense is playing much more aggressive and smarter. I think this team needs to put the effort into "Xs and Os" and run a more structured offense late in the game rather than go unscripted.

IMO the late game loses have been equally on the staff and the players. I also think as a result of the late game struggles you find players playing outside of their confort zone trying to do to much which leads to turnovers or losing track of a man because the focus is on helping another player.

Losings streaks suck because they bring out the worst of the players and the coaches. All the crap and emotions/mentality that can be controlled or hidden comes to the surface and it brings out the worst in people. That said once that streak is snapped and you remember what a win feels like and how to get the desired "w" it could lead to playing at a higher level because you suddenly remember how bad it stings to lose.

8 minutes left in the game. Iowa's lineup was Clemmons, Jok, McCabe, Oglesby and Woodbury. What in the actual **** has to go through someone's head to have that lineup on the floor at any point, let alone at crunch time.

It just hit me that I believe twice? that Fran has admittedly "forgot" about players and "just forgot" to put them back in the game, so this doesn't surprise me. No excuse for that as a coach.

I really like Fran so I hope he figures it out soon. I don't want to suffer through another ineffective coaching regime.

I love Fran's relentless work ethic on the recruiting trail, his passion, his media one liners, sticking up for his players, bringing some excitement back to Iowa Bball.....lots of positives about him.
But, at the end of the day he still has to prove that he can in-game coach with some of the best in the Biz in our league, that is where the rubber meets the road. Beating teams at Siena vs. beating Izzo/Matta/Ryan is a lot different. The first few years we had no talent so it wasn't fair to judge his "coaching abilities"... now that we have talent though we'll see what he does with it. Hoping for a turnaround but right now he seems to just have no answers.

Do you expect him to be on par with Izzo/Matta/Ryan in four years. How many years have they been coaching in the Big Ten. Crean doesn't seem to do so well with his top ten recruiting teams almost every season.....

Remember where we were Lick's last year, we are tied with Ohio State for fourth, missed a golden opportunity last night, but not a lot of time to rest after the Minnesota game.....

Let's not be unrealistic about comparing Fran to Izzo/Matta/Ryan right now.....

I think it is great a coach can be objective enough to look at himself as part of the problem. You can only ride a team for so long, I think a good move would be for him to meet with the team and just tell them "look, we cannot change what has happened in the past. Lets forget about it and let's just go out on Sunday and have fun. Do not worry about what fans say, winning/losing, the tournament, ect ect.....Let's just go out and play basketball and have fun doing it."

I think as fans we could do some of the same things. We got all tied up into Final Four talk, seedings, and rankings. Let's just appreciate this team for what it is, a couple wins away from being in the NCAA Tournament since 2006. Not all is lost, Iowa is not the only team to go into Minneapolis and Bloomington and come out with a loss. Time to flush it.

No way!!!!!! Those losers owe me more!!!! I deserve for them to play better, coach better, and win!

Sorry, couldn't find the sarcasm font.

Anybody notice the announcers calling for a double flagrant foul on Woody, throwing him out of the game for smacking someone on the back. Both announcers kept going on and on about it. This was at the start of the game and the refs were obviously considering it.....

Anybody notice the vicious elbow to Josh Oglesby's jaw late in the first half, On the bench it almost appeared that his jaw was knocked out of place. Dakich said it was a noncall as did the other announcer. They mentioned it a few times. Refs didn't even call a foul, gave the ball to Indiana. Oglesby didn't play very much of the second half especially for a long time at the start of the second half.......

Reminds me of the nasty Villanova team's win at all costs attitude, for instance kicking Aaron White in the nose when he was two feet in the air, very early in the first half. Then early in the second half, poking Aaron in the eye with one finger sticking out of a fist.....

Little things like that can effect a team. They called a foul on Gesell when he and his opponent barely brushed against each other. At the other end an Indiana player was riding an Iowa player around the top of the free throw line, all the way around. No call....

Things like that do not help a team's confidence at all, seeing how the game is being called, you adjust and have to back off a bit or foul out.....

They played at Minnesota on Tuesday, flew to Bloomington, and played at Indiana on Thursday. Rather a tough schedule, don't you think.....

We are still tied with Ohio State for fourth place.....

Jump on or off, it doesn't matter to me....

I know where I stand, and part of that stance doesn't criticize Woody for shushing the crowd. How childish are some people. He gets slammed over and over for two years about not being able to dunk the ball, and I actually thought it was cool.....

Fran had every right to call the punk who put McCabe down on the radio show. What did you want Fran to do. agree with him about putting down one of his players. If he said nothing, he would have been criticized more.....

Please try to remember the condition the Hawks were in when Fran was hired. The elite of the Big Ten have 4/5 star players on the bench, We will get there and do a lot better than Crean and his top ten recruiting classes and number one spot in the NCAA Tournament.....

Spoken like a chronic Homer.....

WE NEED A SENSE OF URGENCY and a home game Sunday vs. Purdue will be just what the doctor ordered. We will end up 11-7 or 10-8 with a 1st round bye in the best conf in America. Mark my words.[/QUOTE]

That ship has sailed. If Nebby is the talk of the Big 10 in 2014, this is not the best conf in America.

There's definitely talent on the team, but there are also players lacking skills at certain positions. Last night we couldn't have kept my mom in front of us. Same with Minny. I'm sure Yogi watched the Minny game and was licking his chops. I know we don't have much break between games lately, but good lord can anyone move their f'n feet on D? Please tell me how guys like Heeshe are able to blow past their defender like they're a cigar store wooden indian? Gesell just gets killed off the dribble. Same for Marble. Well, same for pretty much everybody on the team. We certainly lack quickness at almost every position. Be it lateral quickness on D, dribble penetration, etc. We still, and it doesn't look like it will next year, don't have anyone who can just get their shot when they want, and when the team needs it. Marble, yeah sometimes, but forces way too many into the lane only to get stripped by 3 guys pretty much baiting him to take it all the way to the whole. Gesell sometimes, but more times than not can't get his look when he wants. We NEED someone who can consistently get to the hoop and either finish, or draw other defenders to kick to an open guy. Aside from lacking in skill areas, the obvious lack of mental toughness is what's most concerning and aggravating. Nut up, gentleman. We lose the next game, though I'm pretty much sold it was last night, and you can turn out the lights; the party's over. Would be a horrible way to end a season that had so, so much promise. Prove me wrong, Hawks. Please f'n prove me wrong.

HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD! We need quickness, quickness, quickness. Hopefully Fran can recruit some. Best bet is Juco route for the next few years.

Very good post Jack.

Off course Fran had every right but, could have easily worded his response much differently and still be able to slam the caller just the same. That was very bad response IMO. Just how I feel then and now..

Holy Sheet! How many millions are we paying this guy to forget to get players in the game. What does he have assistants for? JFC, this is ridiculous. I think I'll call the UI payroll office and see if they can "forget" to pay him this month. Damn....

To be fair, Ferentz does just this and gets bashed for it more often than not.

So people are wanting to blame Fran, he owns some of it on himself and now were scared that he is unsure of himself???? #hawkeyefanproblems

I think some of you are reaching for things to blame. The fact of the matter is this team looks afraid to lose. We seen it against Wisconsin, at Minnesota, and again last night. They get late in the game and they turn to crap because they know they have been struggling to win close games. You could see it in their eyes and their body language during time outs. I do not see a lack of talent on the team, I see a team that is mentally drained and feeling the weight of a fan base that has not been to a NCAA tournament since 2006.
I think this is a good thought.

It could be as well that after the Wisky loss at home, they realized their goal of winning a regular championship was gone or was a gut shot with a third loss at home. When goals aren't realized teams struggle for awhile before they get back (or they struggle and don't get back). This is usually demonstrated with bad defense because defense, of course, is about the will.

As far as Fran saying what he said. Sometimes when teams lose it, a coach rides the team hard so they are more afraid of him than they are losing, the fans, etc. I think he's been getting after them hard and especially Gesell maybe so the team unifies around him and starts playing better.

That didn't work so he said what he said.

I think you said it ssc. The team looks like they're afraid to lose rather than they hate to lose. The body language in the Indiana game toward team mates was not a good sign.

He better or he'll have some transfers.

I've wondered this, too, although not so much due to the coaches but frustration with the end of season collapses and seeming uncertainty about who's doing what. It's probably not worth getting into any speculation at this point about who might leave. Or maybe we're all wet and the players love playing for the guy and splitting PT 10-11 ways ...
