Scored in the last 2 min of half against Minnesota, scored in last 3 min against OSU, scored last min of MSU, scored 28 in 4th quarter of Indiana....there could have been more. But I'd say thats not too shabby. I get where you are going with the "mediocre" thing, but going 9-4 and 11-2 the two previous years with something like a 13 game winning streak...I'll take my 7-5 team and be proud to root for them next year.
We didn't score a point in the 4th qtr against Minny. We did have a nice 4th qtr against Indiana, but it shouldn't be a common theme to play close games against 4-8 teams. If Sash didn't get lucky with that crazy pick in the endzone, we may have not been able to turn that game around. All good teams seem to have a scare or two against mediocre teams each year, but Iowa seems to dwell in that.
I also don't know if I would consider the 2008 season a wild success. Most years I would be satisfied with a 9-4 record and a bowl win, but we seemed to lose the majority of close games. The Penn St. game was great, but we lost games we should have won against Illinois, Pitt, Michigan St. and Northwestern (blown 17-3 lead). Those teams weren't bad by any means, but it was similar to many of the losses we had this year in which we failed to convert in crucial downs late in the game. We were also lucky to escape with a win against a terrible Purdue team.
