Maybe Kirk SHOULD resign....

Funny thing is this did happen at Iowa State, remember I think 3 of their players got busted for drugs last year or was it the year before? Also Florida has had more than its fair share of off the field issues in the last 3 years. I wouldnt even go there.

Our football program is in a shambles and he has obviously lost control of the team.

Hopefully this mess gets straightened out, though I fear our recruiting will be hurt for awhile.

Take a deep breath and think before you post.

Or let's just personally attack everyone who dares to criticize dear leader. I could care less if Ferentz steps aside, but it wouldn't have anything to do with the recent drug activity. He runs the most boring high school offensive and defensive schemes I've ever seen from a Div. I football program. When your defensive coordinator says the spread offense should be made illegal because his 1940's cover-2 zone doesn't work effectively against it, you know you are in trouble. Everyone on here rips KOK but makes KF untouchable as if the offensive playbook has no input from the head coach. Unbelievable!

83hawk -

I get what you are saying, but I think it would be worse for his reputation if he resigned. Leaving a program in doubt with no successor and no plan for the future before a bowl game. Not to mention if at least some of the rumors happen to be true and then he resigns. That would be pretty low for any coach to do. I don't think Ferentz is too worried about his image or accomplishments either.

If you believe that Iowa is the only D-1 program with prevalent drug use you are living in lalalala land. I would assume 80-85% of these guys have used recreational drugs while at Iowa...some prescription meds too. It is a fact in our current society like it or not.

80-85% of the team are using/have used?

surely you jest.

I liked the post I read on another site. Kirk steps down and takes the Pitt job. And then has to return to Iowa City next year for the Pitt/Iowa game. Wow that would be nuts.

-1 MM.

Do you really think Norm said that in all seriousness?

Our team hasn't done so bad with our offense and defense. 4 top 10 finishes last 10 years? I know that doens't match up with our national championship legacy, but still not too bad.

Only one b10 team with more wins than iowa in same period - OSU - but, yeah, not good enough for message board clowns.

And Brett Bielema, who is routinely criticized on this board, has surpassed Ferentz in his limited tenure at Wisconsin. Wisconsin has been a much better team than Iowa over the last five years. Bielema has accomplished a higher end of the season ranking than Ferentz ever has (5th in Coaches 2006), and could surpass that this season with a bowl win. Ferentz has only finished the season ranked in the top 25 twice out of the last 6 years. That's hardly the mark of a great coach. But hey keep enjoying that 3 year stretch we had from 2002-04 because over the last 6 years we've dwelled in mediocrity.

In an earlier post you criticize KF for having a boring offense and then you use Bielema as a point of comparison? Seems a little inconsistent.

Wow....a couple of people have thin skins and do not wish to partake in a legitimate discussion.

Resorting to name-callilng....how adult of you airhawk and farm girl!

A question for those who are "dismissing" this as not that big of a deal (since it happens "everywhere").....would you be so forgiving if this were happening at Iowa State...or Michigan....or Florida?

Methinks not.

Where did I call you names? All I said that IF you were posting drunk, then MAYBE you SHOULD stop being an idiot. Nowhere did I even imply that you were a blathering fool who is failing at masking rumor mongering under the guise of "legitimate discussion", and I never would.

MAYBE if you find it difficult to read what I am clearly saying, then MAYBE you SHOULD go back to remedial reading.

OP, grow up. Good discussion is stimulated for thinking outside the box and having pro and con arguments about said topic. You fail here based on your title (rationale aside) trying to fan your flames. Think in the box or out of the box, but don't be the box.

Last time this happened he retooled his team for about 2 years and then went to an Outback Bowl and an Orange Bowl. I'd hate having my team struggle for 2 years and then go to an Outback Bowl and then a BCS Game... pffft... fire Kirk!!!

Way to slap this possible troad around like Jack Nicholson slapped the waitress around in Five Easy Pieces. Hawkeye Nation needs more of this.

Apparently you don't watch many badger games. Don't mistake a power run orientated offense as boring and similar to our scheme. Wisconsin also routinely uses gadget plays Iowa would rarely if ever consider. Would you see Ferentz have the guts to call a punt fake like Bielema did against us? The last time I remember doing something like that was the fake field goal against Ohio State in 2003. Ferentz would likely do the same old fake going for it in hopes of drawing an offsides only to call a timeout and punt. You don't hear opposing coaches and players call Wisconsin predictable as they do to Iowa routinely.

We have one of the worst 2 minute drills I've ever seen. We have an enormous amount of difficulty holding late leads because we play a boarderline prevent no-blitz defense and allow qb's to pick our linebackers apart down the field (linebackers who are covering wide receivers at that). His game management is awful (horrible timeout call against Wisconsin, not using timeouts against LSU in the Capital One forcing Tate to bail him out with a miracle throw). Ferentz has been a mediocre coach the last 6 years, there's no denying that. Anyone who thinks otherwise is an obvious homer.

I can't even give you points for "nice try". Epic fail on your part.

So I guess all the problems are now solved because of a press conference? Have all the drug issues gone away? Has Kirk magically regained control of the team he seemingly lost the second half of the season? Will the playcalling and clock management suddenly improve? How about the player defections?

The Iowa football program is still in a world of hurt. And what is Kirk going to do about it?

smoot - did you not watch the Orange Bowl last year?

Terrible post.

Yet as predictable as Iowa's offense was, I saw a lot of plays where our receivers were wide open behind the last line of defense. Our TEs were consistently open on play-action. While our RBs were often stuffed at the line of scrimmage, there were plenty of plays when they broke into the secondary. I would argue that the problem was execution. Stanzi was horrible on the deep pass. Our RBs do not have breakaway speed. If Stanzi would have hit on a few more of those deep passes, or if we had an RB with above average speed, there would have been a lot fewer complaints.

It is possible for an offense to be predictable but not boring.

I was extremely disappointed with this season. The team obviously underperformed and the coaches deserve a fair share of the blame for this. But to categorize KF as a mediocre coach, based on the sucesses we have had, is a little extreme IMO, and I think your view would fall well short of being the majority opinion.

And phrases like "anyone who thinks otherwise is an obvious homer" reek of arrogance and a closed-minded attitude.
