Matt Quarells Headed to SIU

Things that make you say hmm... Does he think he didn't get and or wouldn't get a fair shake if he stayed? Or did he just know he wasn't good enough after having been here? Either way opens up a scholly

He has one year left. When asked about him during the bye week, Brian Ferentz said MQ was beat out by those who were playing.

My guess is he's leaving because the odds of playing are better at SIU.

I think he was in the same boat with Falconer and Young, who also couldn't beat out true freshmen ISM, Smith and Cooper. Now they've got Tracy and Lockett coming in and Evans potentially playing WR.

No knock on Cooper or anything but it's gotta be a frustrating deal for the coaches when Falconer, Young, and Quarells couldn't beat him out. Cooper looked like he wasn't ready to play he looked way skinnier out there then what Vandeberg even did when he first came. I just saw very little upside for having him out there as opposed to any of the other 3 just mentioned. That said I never saw a single practice let alone be a part of every one of them to know...

Whoa, wait. Don't we recruit against many of the schools such as SIU? Just sayin'. Pretty telling when you can't land a roster spot as a WR on Iowa.

Good luck to MQ, though. I hope he lands and finds quality playing time.

without even reading the article or thread

"couldn't learn the playbook"
"too slow"
"not a good fit"
"hands of stone"
"blocking blocking blocking"
and my all time favorite
"didn't need him anyway"

I thought he might have been a guy who could have stretched the field being a 200 meter champ in high school but apparently couldn't grasp the complex blocking schemes or complex route schemes. You know, the playbook.

Or, he had stone hands and no football speed.

Regardless, we didn't need him. Lots of talent and depth. And athletes. Have you heard? A lacrosse player is coming. Gonna have great hand - eye coordination.

Watching Iowa's receivers all year from the sidelines...and then being told you won't see the field because they are better...even with those receivers wandering about, unable to get open...yah, that's a kick in the head.

And the skill players saga continues...

Better buckle down and get ready for a lot minutes, defense...

I thought ISM did a good enough job getting open. It was his hands and face that got in his way. I still remember him burning his man vs minnesota and then taking a perfectly thrown football off his face for an interception.

He certainly got open against Iowa State enough to catch 2 TD's including the game winner as well.

I'm still bitter about that play. We threw deep from our own endzone, and Stanley threw a beaut of a pass that hit ISM in the hands, in stride. Would've been a 95-yard TD, instead it's a pick and the offense and the playcalling turtles for the rest of the game (minus Fant's long TD). I like ISM and what he brings to the table, but damn, if I wasn't pissed off at him for that play.

If BF wasn't cursing up a storm after that then I'm not sure when he would... Oh wait... Ha but yeah I'm with ya that was a back breaking play at the time. He may or may not have scored on it but it was pretty darn possible he could have. We've only seen him in the open field running with the ball a couple times really. I'm a tad surprised he hasn't gotten more bubble screens then he got. Did we throw him more then a couple of em? Not that it's a favorite play by any means but I'd rather they throw those to him than JVB or Easley...

That was in fact the press box tirade game. It was not that play that caused it but the play where the held up our running back (believe it was Butler held up by like 4 of their players) and ripped the ball out after what likely should have been blown dead with progess stopped, And this was close to half time.

#6 gets a pass for what he did against ISU in that game.
