Matt Quarells Headed to SIU

So, the moral of the story is: Grad transfers from the Mountain West are hit or miss, but MAC punters are probably a safe bet...

We are talking about New Mexico here, so it's the bottom of the Mountain West. I'm just glad the incomming freshmen were an improvement.

I'm still bitter about that play. We threw deep from our own endzone, and Stanley threw a beaut of a pass that hit ISM in the hands, in stride. Would've been a 95-yard TD, instead it's a pick and the offense and the playcalling turtles for the rest of the game (minus Fant's long TD). I like ISM and what he brings to the table, but damn, if I wasn't pissed off at him for that play.

Preach! I die a little inside every time I see an Iowa offense throw a deep ball to a streaking WR only to watch him drop it. Let alone bounce of his face into a defenders arms almost 5 yards away. I certainly died double on that one.

We are way conservative and only scheme up about 4 or 5 deep shots a game. The good Iowa offenses are the ones that actually convert a few of them per game.

All the same I am still optimistic about ISM's potential. Very fast. He was able to get separation against good corners pretty regularly. I am hoping that an off-season of our strength and conditioning program can put some bulk on him. A little strength, violent hand contact, and break away speed are all you need to be a press breaker. He has the speed. He demonstrated a few times press shedding hand skills. The strength might just be his missing key. My hopes are high for ISM to have a breakout Sophomore season.

Calvin Lockett will remind folks of ISM.

Good. You really do need at least 1 in every class. Possession, Slot and Deep threat. 3 different types of WR and you need them all. Even if you have a good young one you need more each year. Injuries and attrition being what they are and all.

That was in fact the press box tirade game. It was not that play that caused it but the play where the held up our running back (believe it was Butler held up by like 4 of their players) and ripped the ball out after what likely should have been blown dead with progess stopped, And this was close to half time.

#6 gets a pass for what he did against ISU in that game.
Oh yeah the tirade was against the refs mostly on that play your mentioning but that ISM drop among others sure didn't help his overall mood going into that.

Yeah he was as much the hero of that ISU game as Wadley and Stanley were. He had that earlier TD in that game which was pretty as all get out too besides the game winner. Kid has potential oozing out of him. He's just gotta improve his hands get a little stronger etc...

We hear the same crap very year about how this guy and that guy coming in are so talented blah, blah, blah. So and so is a speedster and can really stretch the field blah, blah, blah. Then every year we have zero receivers that can get open. Same thing this year, and the next, until KF is gone. Lockett is supposed to remind us of ISM? How he looks or what? Because ISM really wasn't all that great. Might be considered one of the best we have, but thats like saying you're the tallest midget. If KF landed someone talented he nor his protege Brian would ever be able to figure out how to utilize them.

Some great catches in ISU game in the clutch.

I think he was in the same boat with Falconer and Young, who also couldn't beat out true freshmen ISM, Smith and Cooper. Now they've got Tracy and Lockett coming in and Evans potentially playing WR.
Sounds like one spot opened up today...heard on local radio that Falconer is no longer with the program.

I thought he might have been a guy who could have stretched the field being a 200 meter champ in high school but apparently couldn't grasp the complex blocking schemes or complex route schemes. You know, the playbook.
.

Ah yes that complicated offense that few freshmen can comprehend .... but defenses seem to understand and snuff
