Matt Campbell going pro?

In the Twin Cities they do a segment on ESPN radio about pro football and have a guest on each day and this year they had Sage Rosenfels on talking Vikings and the pro game. Last Friday they were discussing some of the potential pro coach moves and Sage stated that he was aware of several pro teams that were interested in Matt Campbell as the head coach.

From what he stated they were serious inquiries and was interesting considering he has no NFL experience and is so young. Just wondering what the Iowa papers or radio are saying about this and what potential coaches they would look for to replace MC.

IMO if he leaves, Iowa State will drop back down again big time and will take years to regain what has been created.

I thought I heard he wasn't going anywhere. Something to that effect a week or two ago anyway. But who knows. I would imagine as the musical chairs begin getting filled up we'll have a better idea if he's interviewing anywhere or not

Matt Campbell’s buyout is $7M. There are only 5 NFL head coaches with a yearly salary of more than $7M.

There’s zero chance any NFL team buys him out for that much and zero chance an NFL team gives him a contract worth as much as his extension is at Iowa State. Where he’s sitting with his contract is the worst possible place for any team looking to lure him away. Towards the end of his contract? Maybe.

There’s also a long history now of college coaches flopping when they hit the pros that you don’t see anywhere near as much of it as you used to. College money is just as good if not better, and the job security for a good coach (NFL wouldn’t come calling if they sucked) is almost rock solid.

Why would you take a lateral move money-wise to go pro and find out after a couple years that you’re the next Steve Spurrier, in a league where you get no support whatsoever unless you’re winning playoff games every year? In college 90% of the fans are total homers that will take a bullet for 7-5 coaches as long as they don’t get mixed up in a scandal. In the NFL you’re as disposable as toilet paper and Adam Schefter will find out you got fired two days before you do. F that.

I'm a Browns fan and I can tell you that there's a LOT of smoke around Matty going to Cleveland. He's already met/interviewed with the GM and staff, they want him, but are proceeding through interviews this week and will make their decision, hopefully by the end of the week.

Funny your almost describing Hoibergs experience as well..

Kind of an off question about this. Could it be beneficial for a school who knows there coach will eventually leave to increase his contract knowing that someone like an NFL team would just buy it out?

Why go to the NFL and have real expectations when he can stay in Ames, win 5-7 games a year, take a few shots at "TOE", and be a god?

I think it can be a little different for people who grew up around NFL teams or had them in their state. We in Iowa can question that but we don't really have an NFL team. Ohio has two.

this rumor has been floating around forever (him to OSU/pros). Fool me 7 times, shame on you.........fool me 8 times

Hue Jackson's salary was just over $4.25M, and Campbell has 6 years/$22.5M guaranteed. The Brown stains are on their 9th head coach in 15 years, there's no way Campbell leaves and there's no way the Browns write checks for over $11M+ out of the gate before he coaches a game (buyout included). He's smart enough to know he'd only be there for a couple years before getting fired because Cleveland has the world record for longest, hottest, and rottenest dumpster fire in the history of the sport (and running). At most that job would be worth $8-10M before he gets the boot, and then good luck finding another lucrative coaching job after that. Getting fired from Cleveland and having no other NFL coaching experience pretty much means that for the rest of your career you're going to be flying cargo planes full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong.

Clown fans think he's Bill Belichick and as long as he makes the Piggly Wiggly bowl every other year and stays at least 6-6 he'll make millions for the rest of his career. The only place he's going is to a higher-paying college gig when his buyout gets smaller.

I thought you were referring to Kirk at first... I guess that's one thing the NFL is good for: contract negotiations. ;)

I don't really think that's such a serious threat; the best coaches in college (the ones who'd be considered for a buyout) already make around the same, if not more than NFL coaches with longer contracts and waaaaaay more job security. That's one of the reasons why you don't see it much. Top college coaches have a much better deal than the typical one in the NFL. Another factor is seeing guys go down in flames like Spurrier and Chip Kelly did.

Chip Kelly went 46-7 with Oregon including 4 conference titles, a Fiesta Bowl, two Rose Bowls, and a national championship game. Stopped at UCLA for a year and then went to the NFL. He went 10-6 each of his first two seasons with the Eagles, made the playoffs, and the got fired after a 6-9 season that he didn't even get to finish.

Bottom line is there is zero love in the NFL and the odds are overwhelmingly not in your favor. Kelly had a chance at making a dynasty at Oregon and he dribbled it down his leg. I wouldn't imagine his time at Philly or taking the Niners to 2-14 the following year before getting fired again were very pleasant to endure either. When they say it stands for Not For Long, it's not just players.

I have no doubt several NFL are interested, teams with vacancies are interested in dozens of guys. But are any ready to make an offer? No.

I don't believe it for a minute, but there are a lot of Browns beat writers that say he's in the top 3 for the GM. They have loads of cash to spend and if they think that he's the guy, I think they'd shell out the cash. Do I want him? Absolutely not! But it's what they're saying.

I just think he’s a smart enough guy to see that based on a long running history he’d be dooming his career. He doesn’t have the success or the resume that say a Chip Kelly or Nick Saban would have to be able to bounce back from flopping in the NFL. If it was a good deal we’d see tons of top 25 NCAA coaches getting poached but it just doesn’t happen with a ton of frequency.

And are you sure you're not thinking of Dan Campbell? Reporters were talking about Matt Campbell as a long shot back in November, but anything lately has been about McDaniels and Dan Campbell as the two guys in consideration.

Maybe you're seeing "Campbell" in the headlines and thinking it's the wrong one?

Matt Campbell has told the Register a couple times that he's staying put.

Buyouts aren't going to stop some NFL teams from getting their guy if they want him bad enough. They know what's involved financially yet we hear of continued interest in wanting to interview some of these coaches.

L. Riley's buyout is over 20 million
M. Campbell's is over 17 million
J. Harbaugh is over 17 million

Aren't too many decent college coaches that don't have big buyouts these days. Don't see Campbell moving this year BTW.
