Matt Campbell going pro?

I sure as hell would if I were him.
To each their own I guess.. I can see why some would. And I certainly can see why coaches wouldn't either... If he sticks it out at ISU 10 yrs or more I'll be pretty surprised. But he might..

And are you sure you're not thinking of Dan Campbell? Reporters were talking about Matt Campbell as a long shot back in November, but anything lately has been about McDaniels and Dan Campbell as the two guys in consideration.

Maybe you're seeing "Campbell" in the headlines and thinking it's the wrong one?

Matt Campbell has told the Register a couple times that he's staying put.
Dan Campbell is a candidate, but Matt Campbell has been considered one of the GM's favorites from the beginning. I don't believe it will happen, but there is smoke and a meeting between the two sides has been confirmed, but that's about it. The significance is that Campbell is willing to listen, which goes against what clown fans think about him being in Lames forever.

Matt Campbell’s buyout is $7M. There are only 5 NFL head coaches with a yearly salary of more than $7M.

There’s zero chance any NFL team buys him out for that much and zero chance an NFL team gives him a contract worth as much as his extension is at Iowa State. Where he’s sitting with his contract is the worst possible place for any team looking to lure him away. Towards the end of his contract? Maybe.

There’s also a long history now of college coaches flopping when they hit the pros that you don’t see anywhere near as much of it as you used to. College money is just as good if not better, and the job security for a good coach (NFL wouldn’t come calling if they sucked) is almost rock solid.

Why would you take a lateral move money-wise to go pro and find out after a couple years that you’re the next Steve Spurrier, in a league where you get no support whatsoever unless you’re winning playoff games every year? In college 90% of the fans are total homers that will take a bullet for 7-5 coaches as long as they don’t get mixed up in a scandal. In the NFL you’re as disposable as toilet paper and Adam Schefter will find out you got fired two days before you do. F that.

Freddy Hioberg didn't like recruiting 24/7/365. Once you have made enough money, does it matter who fires you and when??? I mean give me my money with a smile on my face.

I agree for now....but Campbell's buyout 1 year and 23 days from now is only 5 mill. There are college and NFL teams that would absolutely swallow that

I don't doubt for a minute that he'd jump for a college gig. In fact I expect it once he gets some time knocked off his contract.

Buyouts aren't going to stop some NFL teams from getting their guy if they want him bad enough. They know what's involved financially yet we hear of continued interest in wanting to interview some of these coaches.

L. Riley's buyout is over 20 million
M. Campbell's is over 17 million
J. Harbaugh is over 17 million

Aren't too many decent college coaches that don't have big buyouts these days. Don't see Campbell moving this year BTW.
Matt Campbell's buyout is $7M right now and goes down $1M per year. Not sure where you got $17M.

My error as those are buyouts owed if fired without cause. Yes, 7M looks correct.........point being it hasn't chased away rumors of some NFL teams still wanting to talk/interview with college candidates regardless of buyout numbers.

I'm a Browns fan and I can tell you that there's a LOT of smoke around Matty going to Cleveland. He's already met/interviewed with the GM and staff, they want him, but are proceeding through interviews this week and will make their decision, hopefully by the end of the week.

Already met/interviewed with the Cleveland GM and staff? Link?

Hue Jackson's salary was just over $4.25M, and Campbell has 6 years/$22.5M guaranteed. The Brown stains are on their 9th head coach in 15 years, there's no way Campbell leaves and there's no way the Browns write checks for over $11M+ out of the gate before he coaches a game (buyout included). He's smart enough to know he'd only be there for a couple years before getting fired because Cleveland has the world record for longest, hottest, and rottenest dumpster fire in the history of the sport (and running). At most that job would be worth $8-10M before he gets the boot, and then good luck finding another lucrative coaching job after that. Getting fired from Cleveland and having no other NFL coaching experience pretty much means that for the rest of your career you're going to be flying cargo planes full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong.

Clown fans think he's Bill Belichick and as long as he makes the Piggly Wiggly bowl every other year and stays at least 6-6 he'll make millions for the rest of his career. The only place he's going is to a higher-paying college gig when his buyout gets smaller.

Campbell can stay at ISU for a few more years, coach up some of his own recruits, and there will always be 5-7 NFL jobs open a year and you just have your agent put out the word when you are looking.

But I bet he salivates thinking what he could do with Baker Mayfield.

Talking heads will say whatever gets them the most listeners or clicks. Campbell hasn’t met with anybody, I guarantee it. That’d totally destroy recruiting and it would be plastered all over Iowa media.

The disc jockeys are full of shit.

He’ll bail for a better college program for reasons mentioned above.

Guys...

This is the absolute, most completely stupid fucking conversation in the history of the universe. Matt Campbell???

Take a look at every single head coach in the NFL. Zero, not a SINGLE one got a head coaching job straight out of being a head coach in college. Not one. Zip. The vast majority spent several years as assistants in the NFL before getting their job and all spent at least some time as an non-coordinator assistant. So maybe he’ll leave for a job as OC or something, you say??? Uh no. He makes wayyyyyyy more money as a head coach at ISU.

Basically you guys saying he’s going to get a job as HC in the pros, are also saying he’s got more talent than every single NFL HC did when they broke in. This isn’t Dabo Swinney here. We’re talking about Matt Campbell, ya rubes. Jesus guys. Step back and think about how dumb this is. This is only a half a stupidity notch below the dorks who preached that Mitch King was a second round lock.

It was on an Albert Breer (NFL insider) podcast. Have seen it mentioned other places. I'll see if I can find somewhere that states it other than ones that are citing Breer.

No crap! Apperantly Fry all those guys in the pro's for years as assistants, coordinator's and qb coaches are inexperienced next to one Matt Campbell

Browns fan hHÜSKER DÜ ere. I haven't seen anything about Matt Campbell having been interviewed yet. The Browns have been tweeting after they interview each candidate. They have said they interviewed DAN Campbell. I think smoke right now is pointing towards current interim OC Freddie Kitchens.

People like to crap all over the Browns and their past but they are easily the best job available in the NFL right now. They finally have a guy that looks like the solution at QB (possibly ROY), a stud rookie RB, CB (pro bowler), stud pro bowl 2nd year DE, and a ton of other young talent. I think they also have the 3rd most available cap space. They are about to make some noise, and it has already begun.

Any college coach they, or anyone else talks with, is always kept quiet because of recruiting purposes. I agree that it's the best job open, so much young talent, franchise QB, tons of cap space, 11 draft picks, amazing GM, etc. The biggest problem is that their owner meddles in everything and is a loon.

Dan Campbell. Now, that makes more sense.

Breer, who is very connected, is currently doing his weekly podcast, and he said that he's not totally certain that Matt Campbell is going to stay in college this year, and he wouldn't be surprised if he made the jump. He knows that there has been contact between Campbell and Dorsey, but he does fell like it's becoming more likely that Campbell will be in college again next year.

As a Browns fan, I can say that the chances of it happening are very low. The only connection is Dorsey has Ohio guys on his staff and Campbell is a big name in the inner circles of coaching in Ohio, because of his working through the ranks in Ohio as an ass't and HC. It's not going to happen. The thought was that he would be able to change the toxic culture in Cleveland and manage the staff and players, which he is good at, hire good coordinators and grow as a coach with the young talent on the roster. That need is waning, because of the winning that was done at the end of the season. If he was hired as HC, I would flip out, as would most Browns fans. He constantly gets bashed on the Browns board I am on. However, some insiders still think there's a shot. Are they throwing things at the wall an hoping it sticks? I hope so. Is it really a possibility? I hope not, but many still say it's a shot. I just can't see someone that's not even a winning coach in 3 years at a P5 school with no NFL experience being hired, let alone considered. But it is my Browns we're talking about...

I don't really disagree with you Fryowa, but would you honestly put it past the Browns to do such a thing? The same completely inept front office held on to Hue Jackson through a 2-32 stretch as head coach. There is zero stupid decisions that I don't believe that FO would make.
