Masters ratings down 22% without Tiger

So you care enough to click on it, weigh in, and make a claim that the lack of Tiger (sic) wasn't the cause of the decline in ratings, but not enough to actually give a reasonable alternative hypothesis or any justification of why you hold that belief?

you've got me pegged. honestly, you know i must be bored to check into a thread started by yourself, mr. buckmaster.

again, don't care enough to do any further research. i thought the Easter explanation probably hit the nail on the head, but like i say, maybe more people were stupid enough to watch the musters because it was Easter and they were confined at ma's for the day...

To a golfer, the game is bigger than Tiger. It will still be here after he's gone. It may not get the coverage and enjoy the popularity as it has under Tiger's domination, but the game will survive. To many who enjoy golf, that may be a good thing.

Sure, in the same sense that Michael Jordan isn't bigger than the game of basketball.

Fair enough :D

^Correct. Tiger means higher ratings for sure because of several reasons, some hate him, some love him, and he brings in casual golf fans.

If Tiger retired tomorrow a lot of casual golf fans would quit watching the ratings would dip and purses and sponsorship would decline a certain amount. But the PGA would still be strong and they would do other things to market the events and players.

Espn and the networks would build promotions to replace their usual Tiger-love fest and create new matchups that people want to see. Their was Arnie-Jack, Jack-Trevino,Jack-Watson, Norman-Shark-vs the world, Shark-Faldo, and the PGA would find a way to get some viewers back.

But real golf fans will watch the big events, the 4 majors, tpc, memorial, Fedex Cup and worldwide matchups like the Ryder Cup. Tiger or no Tiger.

Then why won't they watch him?

The sponsors and money people actually are more concerned with the demographics of the people who watch. The PGA Tour has always had a viewership that is in a higher income bracket hence all the big money sponsers and TV adds.

I would really be more interested in knowing the demographics of the people who did not tune in to watch Tiger. Are these casual golf fans or even just tiger fans who did not tune in? What is their average income and buying power.

If the demographic that continues to watch golf will buy cadillacs, buicks, trade on the stock exchange, and buy rolexs then you do not have to worry about the PGA tour, the golf channel and CBS and NBC's coverage of events.

Long after Tiger retires, there will be bored white men who hate their wives who need an excuse to ignore them during a beautiful day.

My wife watched the last three hours with me and loved it. And she hasnt golfed in over 40 years.

People like to watch the major golf events. It is about the only game or sport where your opponent can not directly take the ball from you or alter your shot, etc so to watch people excel or crumble is interesting.

Explain how people can watch a pack of stock cars rumble around an oval for 3 hours in a big pack or watch a nil-nil soccer game for 2 hours. Remember the slogan, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

I have to admit if Phil wasn't in the running I probably wouldn't have watched as much as I did. If Tiger would have been in the running I would have watched too but for a different reason.:)

That's not true. It's just liek bowling.

Unlike bowling, however, it's still a sport where the vast majority of the player's time is spent either walking or thinking.

While this is true it's not like Tiger attracts huge numbers of non-traditional golf viewers or people completely outside the target demographic of golf advertisers. Tiger attracts more or less the same people that golf normally does, he just attracts more of them.

As I said, it is one of the few, very few sports like this. Medal play golf tournaments are all on the shoulders of each competitor.

Who cares about casual fans or ratings? I think the guys on tour are paying their bills on time. 14 different winners in the last 14 majors is fun for golf fans.

This is what I have been saying. What, do you expect all of these white dudes in the suburbs to suddenly want to spend time with their families? As long as there are bored white guys, there will be an audience for professional golf.

What sport isn't like this?

Obviously, golf will go on once Tiger leaves the game, just as it was here before he burst onto the scene in '97. He's golf's MJ, though. And the NBA took a BIG step back when MJ retired (not counting the stint with the Wizards). It's now back, as strong as ever, but it took several years to recover from MJ's retirement.

It'll take a fair amount of time for golf to recover when Tiger calls it quits. But it won't fall to pre-Tiger levels. The level of interest between Jack/Arnold and Tiger was pretty down. Tiger reinvigorated the game, and brought it to where it is now. Without Tiger, the game wouldn't be as big of a deal. But his dominance was awe-inspiring, and now it's equally awe-inspiring to see the depth of the field.
