Once KU, UNC, Duke, etc. start sniffing around it is pretty much over. As I heard that Bill Self (and he does NOT waste time and resources) was in Waukee the other night I would say this is done and dusted then. If you want to get those kids you have to get them to sign on in 8th or 9th grade. If you don't, they aren't coming.

Apparently your thought is if KU, UNC or Duke offer a scholarship, then there is 0.00% probability that any other school will have a shot of getting a commitment from said player. That might be more or less true right now given how bad both ISU and Iowa have been in recent years, and Lick definitely was NOT going to land any of these types of players with this style of play, but if we start winning again, I don't think that it's as hopeless as you make it sound. I'm not saying anything will be easy, but hey, you never know.

As for "wasting resources".. I don't buy that for a second. Iowa's athletic department is what, Top-15 nationally in revenue or something like that? I think we can afford to splurge on a trip to Waukee, IA.

Just because you have a lot of money or resources doesn't mean you can't waste said money or resources.

Vs. a trip to a game to watch someone that is on our radar not for the sole reason of being in the same state as the school is in. Unless we were watching someone else idk.

Every team goes after kids they don't get. Going after a kid who is 20 min from your doorstep is the biggest no brainer in the world. Maybe you liked Lick's recruiting strategy, because you are advocating the very thing Lick did....recruit only a couple kids each year...

Not recruiting Paige or any highly ranked Iowa kid is one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard. You miss on more recruits than you get but you miss on EVERY kid that you don't recruit. Iowa or ISU will get a highly ranked Iowa kid soon enough.

Horner, Brunner, Haluska not national. All knew they weren't good enough for the elite programs. Lafrentz, Barnes, Hinrich, Collison I would put Paige on their level at this point, well, maybe not Barnes as he was the #1 recruit at all positions.

Brunner, Horner, and Haluska were all top-100 players (Horner was top-35) in the '02 class according to Student Sports, a company that has since merged with ESPN's recruiting group. They all had big time scholarship offers (Horner probably had the fewest of the three even though he was the best prospect, but that was only bc he committed so early) and they chose to stay in-state. Granted, Iowa was at a very different place in 2002 than they are today, but to say we have "no chance" at Paige just because other big time programs are going after him is not entirely accurate.

On the other hand, in the last five years, there is little to no precedent for a top-25 nationally ranked player staying in state and spurning top-25 programs. The short list would probably consist of Royce White (although Minnesota made the tourny in '09, but that was after he had signed) and Jamychyl Green in '08. That's pretty much it, so Paige (or Jok in a couple years) to Iowa would be a major coup.
