Major unappreciated positive for 2019

So for the first time since 2015 and then awhile before that, Iowa didn’t have that yearly inexplicable loss to a bad team. They won every game they were favored in and lost the 3 they were underdogs in. I know this doesn’t mean much overall, but on a personal level losing to northwestern and purdue in 2018, losing to northwestern in 2017 and to northwestern and NDSU in 2016 were crushing losses.

Feel the exact same way. Always have.

Someone else posted in another thread that since 2015 Iowa has the 3rd best winning % in games that is was favored (behind only Clemson and Bama). This blew my mind as ever since I can remember Iowa has always dropped games to teams they were double digit favorites in. Obviously the frequency of this has been really cleaned up since 2015.

Very good observation. I am for sure one of the people who complain how KF just seems to always have at least one very underwhelming game each year. A game where the hawks are the better team but just play with such conservative offense and sit back conservative defense and end up losing.

The 2014 loss at Kinnick to a poor ISU team was the game that made me put had one foot on the Fire KF/KF should retire bandwagon. And my other foot was half way to the bandwagon. Parker admitted afterwards they played too soft and conservative and they wouldnt keep doing that and the team responded until the HawkSlayer blowout.

Who was the poster arguing that good teams should always cover the spread? That was funny.

I’m secretly hopeful we reached a new level of talent so we avoid those bad losses. Recruiting has been solid for years now with no huge misses.

Yup. When you break it down it's tough to tear apart a coach over that. I think Vegas had us at 7.5 wins. They were banking on us losing a game or 2 we weren't supposed to and NOT winning any we weren't supposed to either. Now when you lose in close games in the 3 we did it's still frustrating as all get out. Especially Wisconsin. As bad as we all wanted to beat them imagine being T Young and Stanley. So I'm not hopping mad or anything like that. Hopeing for a good matchup in the Bowl game and finish strong

It also means they didn’t pull the major upset. Yeah they beat Minnesota, but Iowa was favored.

I don’t consider the Minnesota win a massive win either. It’s Minnesota. You need to beat a big boy in the big ten for the signature win.

Listen...Losing to NW or Purdue last year were not in the "loss to teams we shouldn't lose to" category. Those are Big Ten teams and NW was the Division Champ for christ's sake. Purdue beat OSU last year.

The teams we shouldn't ever lose to are the NDSU's of the world. Honestly...we haven't had one of those since that game.

Iowa had more talent than northwestern last year and in 2017. That’s a fact. Iowa found a way to lose in 2018 with fant on the sideline.

As far as spread and betting, Iowa is a very tricky team to bet on with the way KF coaches by playing close game and hoping come out on top in the end. They usually can elevate their game to play with anyone and often times play down to the level of the opponent.

Yeah this occurred to me, too. Iowa always seemed to have a loss or two that you feel it shouldn't have, which in my mind was often the difference between 7-5/8-4 and 9-3/10-2 seasons. This year, Iowa won the games it was supposed to, and therefore: 9-3. Good.

Now to get that offense going, which IMO is clearly the Achilles heel. Not just this year, but for the program.

Vegas sets the line where they think they will get the most action on both sides of the over/under. It really has nothing to do with what they think Iowa will win or lose a game they are not supposed to.

there is a fixed dosage of pain we have to take each season. In 2015 it was received at the end of the season. other years it is dosed out with those losses. This year it came as a weekly sip of terrible offense spread over the course of the entire season..but none bad enough to cause a loss.

Almost. The worst part of that loss to NDSU was that you would think that would have woken Iowa up. But the next week at Rutgers they tied in the 4th quarter before winning 14-7 and the week after that they lost to a 7-6 Northwestern team at home 38-31. The same Northwestern team that lost to Illinois St at home and scored only 7 points while doing so.
