He's right you know.

I can't remember, but didn't someone on here post or maybe I read it somewhere, that lesser included infractions (based upon the amount of times an athlete wagered, amount and what sport or etc) were being dealt with with re-education or game suspension(s)?

yea, I seriously doubt they are going to nail them to the wall like a rapist. They might use them as an an example going forward. I wouldn't be surprised if the NCAA eventually let them have eligibility left, with a short lease of course.

Probably...altho it appears KFerentz wasn't aware of Blom's having betted on an Iowa game, so there could be others. It appears that criminal charges are only being brought against players who used false identities to place their bets. In other words, those who took pains to avoid prosecution and who demonstrated 'consciousness of guilt', as they say.
My guess is the others, like Shannon and other 'players to be named later', just placed their bets under their own account, without trying to so obviously conceal.
Right. The ones that were under age to start with were some of them I bet. I just can't believe that they'd think that doing this would be worth the risk. They KNEW it was wrong and not only against rules but laws. So to see some do that and then the ones that had parents involved!? Even more wild.

I would imagine every program going into camp is bringing this up to guys. If you want to gamble on sports just leave the team now cause this isn't a joke.

The states with good football programs, like Georgia, South Carolina and 'Bama, do not have legal gambling. I think this problem will be confined to certain regions.

Can players in those states or anybody set up a Draft Kings or similar account. How does that work?

They must be physically present in a state where it is legal to (legally) place wagers. Just like in the past when anyone could fly out to Vegas and place a wager. Every app I know of checks your location on login.

If you are in Minnesota and try to place a bet the app knows it and won't allow it. Once you cross into Iowa it is a go. The only workaround I have heard about is establishing a VPN that makes it appear as though you are in Iowa. I am not a tech guy, but I have heard of folks doing that.

I could see one doing that. Pretty much anything is possible technologically speaking.

The VPN angle is iffy, once they suspect an IP address is associated with a VPN, they will ban it, as will many streaming services and some websites. So it's a game of cat and mouse, unless you are hosting your own VPN or have a proxy setup or find a smaller VPN provider who can exist undiscovered for longer. This stuff happens with online poker a lot as well, where the real issue is validating a physical residence for payouts.

How hard would it be for a player in those states to 1) Drive to another state before logging in (not hard but time consuming), or 2) Use a VPN, which would completely change their phone's reported location (easy to do, set up takes less than 10 minutes).

1) without the VPN, they’d have to do this every time they open the app, but it would be perfectly legal (assuming they are at least 21 and not violating any other laws).

2) While it is certainly possible to circumvent the location requirement with a VPN, it’s not nearly as easy as it once was. Any major VPN provider likely won’t work, the sports books know the endpoints, and can identify and shut down new ones fairly quickly. If you have a working account with a sports book, try it yourself. Authentication will likely fail with your VPN enabled. That’s not to say there aren’t work arounds, but they aren’t always trivial. Other non-gambling service providers have similar safeguards in place. For example, it’s a lot more difficult to change your YouTubeTV location at will for this or that sporting event than it once was. I have a number of websites I cannot fully use with my VPN enabled, and I use (when I use a VPN) a more obscure VPN than most.
