MAC Eliminating 8 Postseason Tourneys, Contracting Hoops Tourney

Could be terrible timing to make this move at this time. Depending on how long athletic departments are down they may need to plan on restructuring their conference in the event universities can't afford to reopen their athletic departments when this is all said and done with. Smaller conferences like the MAC may need to worry about having enough teams to make up a conference rather than getting rid of divisions and taking the top 8 teams to Cleveland.

Is this just a temporary 1-year thing due to the corona virus? It's not clear.

Back in 2006 and 2007 the firm I worked for had a per person lunch budget of "within reason." Double porterhouse, a side and a drink was within reason. Then, 2008 happened. The recession was used as a pretext to slash the lunch budget to an unconscionable $35 per person. The recession ended, but the budget cap was never lifted. There are countless examples like this that occurred in the Great Recession. This thing is going to be The Great Recession on steroids for all kinds of institutional budgets. Travel, meals and entertainment, even longer term real estate procurement issues. So while they might say it's temporary, the hole is going to take years to dig out of and schools like Akron and Ball State aren't exactly going to be clamoring for a return to MAC tournaments in non-revenue sports anytime soon. By the time things normalize and stabilize, people will have forgotten all about what was lost from the old days. So the simple answer to your question is "yes."

It's the freaking "fuel surcharge" in reverse. Gas went up to north of $3/gallon, companies started putting fuel surcharges on their visits....and they never left. Why the hell is the trash company charging me a "fuel surcharge" when gas was down to $1.20 recently?
