Lunardi Says.....

Interesting. ESPN's RPI dropped us 4 spots to number 65 last night. ISU's loss carried a heavier weighting than Northwestern's win even though our conference SOS is now #1.

Not any good? BYU's RPI is 41. But Wisconsin is a "good win" and their RPI is 51?

Not sure I get the logic there.

#1. I did not say Iowa had any good wins.
#2. BYU sucks. RPI rankings be damned. They have beaten no one. Their losses to good teams have been by big margins. Check out their schedule if you doubt what I say.
#3. I could give a crap about Wisconsin's RPI either. They have lost to some good teams (Florida, Virginia, Creighton). They at least have some good wins. A win at Indiana is about as good a road win as a team can have. Ill. and Arkansas are decent wins, too.

Using the RPI as a tool in team selections for the NCAA Tourney is baloney. Nothing beats the old eye ball test.

I'm not sure they use the RPI exclusively. I think they use the RPI, Sagarin, Pomeroy and whatever else they can get their hands on.

If Iowa can take care of business the next 2 games (BIG IF at Purdue) I think we are right back in the conservation. If we lose to Purdue but defeat Minny or Wisky on the road, we are back in the conversation. If we are 3-7 after the first 10, we are really going to have to get hot the rest of the way......

BYU is 34 in Kenpom.

BYU has lost to:
Florida State by 18 points
Notre Dame by 10 points
Iowa State by 21 points
Baylor by 15 points.
St. Marys by 1 point

Their best win was at home against Va. Tech.
The rest of their wins were against nobodys.

Someone please explain how that schedule translates into a good RPI or KenPom ranking.. They also play in a Basketball league that has Gonzaga and that's about it.
St. Marys is ok but they lost to them already.
Once again, RPI means nothing.

MOV over bad times has a lot to do with why BYU is rated highly on Kenpom. That and they rebound very well, score very efficiently and at a high level.

All those imply that they are a good but not great team.

Well as soon as blubberhawkeyetestrankings.com goes up I'm sure the fans and committee will be very eager to add your rankings to their selection criteria.

Why waste the characters? Let's just go with Iballtest.com.
go .500 until the last 5-6 games of the season. win the last 5-6 games in the big ten (schedule helps us) and win a few in the big ten tourney and we are in.
plus we did beat wisconsin who beat indiana at indiana so we are in!! no worries!

Iowa could very well be 3-7 after the first 10 but I think they will win at Purdue and will split with @Minnesota and @Wisconsin to be 5-5.

Even if they don't and are 3-7, I think they will go 7-1 in the final 8 to finish at 10-8 and 21-10 overall. That would place them about 7th or 8th in the Big Ten and they would have very winnable 1st round game in the BTT. Then go 1-1 in the BTT to be 22-11 and that will get them into the NCAA tournament.

It's still 2-4 and NW is ahead of us. At this moment that is a big deal. Won't likely hold up. If NW even sort of holds up, I think it actually hurts Iowa's perception.

ILHawk, do you ever go to Northwestern or Illinios games?

I got a buddy out there who isn't too far from Champaign but hasn't gone to a game yet.

I went to the Norfolk game. I'm not a fan, but have a son going their and another graduate from their before moving to Iowa.

The Illini struck me as slow on the perimeter so I"m not surprised at the fall off in B1G after seeing that. That is a huge advantage for Iowa. BP can get insane about shooting though.

Bertran is one of the most under rated players in the B1G. He doesn't know how good he really is. If he figures it out, hope it's not before they play Iowa.

The match up I'm most concerned about is Igwu. He doesn't get a lot of press because they shoot so many 3's. The don't really have a strong 4 either. They have a bunch of 3's and that is somewhat similar to the 88-89 team and they do show glimpses. The weakness of Igwu is that they don't have anyone else.

Another potential match up problem is the chastised Griffey. He is the type of big player that doesn't do much all year and then lights it up for 20 plus points against Iowa.

If Illinois starts doing assists again, could be tough. However I don't think it's all about lack of team play. They do have serious quickness problems on the perimeter. I don't think Norfolk loses to IL on a neutral court.

The hate toward Iowa is as strong as ever. They even like to still bring up the Andy Kauffman shot, which I have no problems with except they talk about how emotional the Hawks were after the game in a not very nice way. A local radio personality I know used to bring it up a lot and I called him on it. He stopped.

The fan base over here is a shambles. It's ugly. People just don't care anymore about football and basketball maybe going that way. At the risk of criticism, I see some similarities in the direction of athletics between Iowa and IL. IL is several years further down the road.

I don't do IL boards as I'm not a fan. Once in a blue moon I do check it out. The hatred of the direction of the IL programs is really ugly.

I've gotten to know a number of coaches over the year. Zook and Turner were actually pretty swell guys. I coached Turners kid years ago and spoke to him via phone a number of times before meeting him. I honestly never made the connection. They were a really nice family.

Greg Landry tried really hard to fit into the community and was fun to talk to. That thing ended badly.

Rob Judson is one of the nicest most steady guys you'll ever meet. He should be a HC somewhere but got caught in the NIU quicksand. He became a HC late and no time to recover. At IL he was able to steady the Chicago recruits. He helped me out a lot in coaching youth sports in spite of his busy schedule. I can remember yelling at him shooting in 79 win the Hawks beat the Illini the week they would have climbed to #1. I miss the Field House!

BYU played another good team last night and got beat by 20. They suck. They would be in a battle with Penn St. and Nebraska for bottom feeder honors if they played in the BIG.

Generally thats what happens when an unranked team plays a top 10 on the road. Move on.
