Loved the autopsy article on the front page

Don't get the questioning tone here. I'm not saying Fran would go to such extremes as was discussed in the Real Sports Segment on Abusive coaches. But, the article does allude to Fran's temperament and I do think it is fair to rationalize that perhaps some players might have a hard time playing for him. We don't know for sure though.

And, believe me, I'm one of those guys that don't like the "wussification of America in sports", but I also think there are limits to what a coach should and should not do with his or her players. I would hope that Fran is not crossing that line and driving his players away.

You really think FM is being abusive to players? So who do you suggest FM be like?

To add further above, I think extra conditioning is fair for being late to practices. I think consequences should happen for a violation of team rules and University Policy (Drugs, criminal activity, poor grades, etc). But calling players "homos, *ussies, threatening to harm them physically, threatening to take away their scholarships for performance, harming them physically, over practicing them beyond the scope of NCAA limits and threatening players who do not agree to it, bullying them, etc is unethical and problematic. The Real Sports segment did a great job of highlighting these types of things that go on behind the scenes. The life of a D1 Athlete is not exactly pie in the sky. And, God forbid if they get seriously hurt playing in college.

Don't pay any attention to ColumbusHawk. There is strong evidence pointing to her actually being Margaret McCaffery.

I don't think some passed third grade reading comprehension skills. I never said Fran persay is abusing his players. But, I do think it is not out of bounds to speculate based on everything that has happened. That is what I liked about the article. But, if Fran is abusing his players it could be why they have struggled down the stretch 2 out of the past 3 years. We don't know for sure though.

I just hope he is not crossing the line.

I have a kindergarten comprehension level. So what are getting at? It is 2016 not 1968, if you are a male you can't even say the word *ussy unless you are in your inner circle of friends or describing a cat. I am old so when FM comes out on the court with soiled toliet paper and uses it as a description of a way his team is practicing/playing.....then come get me. If he ever decides to choke someone let me know.

I maybe could buy that players were afraid of Fran and him bullying the players if they were in their first year or two. The seniors were well aware of Fran's antics long before the final 10 games of their senior year and then deciding they couldn't play for Fran. Gesell has been missing late game shots and free throws for 3 years. Once Uthoff stopped being able to drive to the basket he lost confidence in his overall game. Woody's free throw shooting continued to get better every year and I didn't see his game affected at the end of the year. I don't trust writers. They're out to draw attention and they don't care how they get it.

Very intriguing reading. We'll never know what took place in that players only meeting. But like it said in the article, you don't call a players only meeting when everything is going swell.

As for me, I don't wanna know what was happening with this team. Ready to put it in the rearview and move on to next season.

Go Hawks.

And I don't even have a clue what the writer is talking about in number 2. It's pretty obvious that Uthoff struggles at taking charge with the game on the line. Fran has also said over and over he wants Uthoff to shoot more. That's why Fran said "ask him". He's frustrated with Uthoff for not taking shots. Uthoff saying the ball didn't come to him was just an excuse for not going and getting the ball. It's pretty cut and dry what that was all about. A star player being too passive. Which we all already knew.

But he DID get the ball. I can't tell you how many times we were struggling to get off a shot at all and Uthoff got the ball with 12-15 seconds on the shot clock and simply held the ball for a count or two and passed it back to Mike.

As Jimmy McGinty says in the movie The Replacements: "Winners always want the ball when the game is on the line." They may not always succeed but they always want the ball. Jarrod seemed like he didn't want the ball in those situations.

I was just going to post this. This group crumbled under the pressure of Fran 2 years ago. Then got over it and finished strong the next year. Then killed it halfway through their 4th year with Fran. Then finally crumbled again with a handful of games left in their career because Fran re-wore on them. How could anyone believe that? How much yelling could Fran have possibly been doing while they were winning? Everything is running smooth as can be but behind the scenes, Fran was freaking out to the point it took all their confidence away? So dumb.

Nobody knows what the relationship is like between Fran and his players. Unless you have access to some of the players, it's not worth speculating about. And it's not going to make much difference anyway. We'll see a new team on the floor next year. If the same problems persist, we'll know who the problem is.

Wow......the ISU troll actually has a real opinion on something. So how was Prohm suppose to handle McKay? Pat him on the back and tell him his behavior is ok?

He may or may not be an ISU troll, but he is a PC millenial who is worried about hurt feelings. I got over that when I was about 12.

And for all who think a coach hurts feelings, imagine how bad a player feels when he's on the line in a close game with less than 30 seconds left and clangs both foul shots. Talk about hurt feelings.

Ex players on twitter will make comments now and again that makes you think they have a great relationship. The comments are unnecessary to even say so it's not like they're being fake. If they didn't truly feel that way, they would just say nothing. Also Besabe's twitter pic after he gruduated turned to a pic of him and Fran hugging. That would be weird if they had anything other than a great relationship.

link?

Thanks

I can't remember where I listened to it. Might have been on HN. Reporters asked what he said to them in the locker room and he said "I told them I love them and I'm proud of them". There were also player interviews where they were talking highly of Fran. Obviously they're going to say good things, true or not. But the thinges they said and the tone of voice really sounded genuine. I think it's pretty easy to tell the difference between robotic answers and answers from the heart.

Suggesting that Fran is any different than 95% of coaches out there is just dumb. He has some antics his first few years here, but the last 2 year he has practically been a saint on the sidelines, rarely blowing up at all. He does get on his players at times, but what coach doesn't? Anyone ever watch Izzo on the sidelines, he is constantly yelling at players, way more than Fran ever does.

Docherman and Moorhouse brought this up in a podcast. They have been to tons and tons of practice and they have never seen Fran yell and scream at the guys. I think that is why players are ok with Fran getting on them during games, because it is a game. He isn't doing this to them all the time, he is a teacher in practice and during the game he is a competitor. If you aren't doing your job, you will hear about it.

This gets me to my last point, and it is that David kind of turned this into a hack piece. It is like all journalist come a running to defend their own if a coach slights one of "them" in a press conference. It is comical to me how they feel that coaches should take all of their stupid f@cking questions super serious. Most coaches do a good job dealing with the idiots in the press.....I give them a pass if they sometimes get snarky with them.

That's in line with what I hear, as well. But who knows.

Yea there is no way to know for sure. But when there is such an obvious reason like they don't perform well under pressure, why look for an unobvious reason like they don't perform well under pressure because their coach is a jerk?

Maybe Fran invaded their safe space back in January and after that they feared for their safety. Or maybe he started writing things in chalk instead of on the dry erase board. You know, chalk is downright frightening to college students!
