So, please expound: why do we lose year in and year out, when we clearly possess better talent? Coaching? Players not doing their job? Conservative play calling [playing not to lose]? Turn over margin?
That is the same question that MSU, Nebraska, and to a lesser extent Wisconsin are asking themselves, so it is not exclusive to Iowa. Fitzgerald is a really good coach, and he has a system that maximizes his players' talents. Iowa had a really good run against them from 2013-2015, including 48-7 and 40-10 beatdowns. NW has re-grouped and had our number in the last 3. Hopefully we will see that flip back this year, and if it does, people need to realize that Iowa is not just beating a 1980's also-ran NW team, they are beating one of the top teams in the B1G.
Lindy’s rides with Iowa to reach the Big Ten Championship Game, and potentially compete for a College Football Playoff spot. The Hawkeyes lost two of the best tight ends in college football plus defensive impact players like Anthony Nelson and Amani Hooker. Veteran quarterback Nate Stanley is back, however, and probably does not get the respect he deserves nationally after back-to-back 26-touchdown seasons.
Lindy’s says, “The Hawkeyes could have a good offense, thanks to quarterback Nate Stanley. Will the defense bend or break? And there’s this, Iowa has just one top-25 finish this decade. Iowa is a good pick most years to win the West. It’s up to the Hawkeyes to follow through.”
Sometimes he doesn't even have to keep it close. In the infamous 2005 game (coached by the late Randy Walker with Fitz the D-Coordinator) it was 27-14 Iowa late and the game wasn't even that close. But games like that are where Kirkball works in reverse. We all remember the gory details. A mediocre punt on fourth and short, Wildcats drive in to score, recover onside kick, and score again, all in the last 4:30 or five minutes of the game.I think 90% of Iowa fans realize that this isn't the Northwestern teams from the 80's. It is the manor in which they lose that game which is frustrating. Fitzgerald has this smug, arrogant look on his face throughout the game because he realizes all he has to do is keep the game close and Iowa will meltdown at some point. Last year was a perfect example, they stuck with that vanilla game plan on offense knowing they would have an opportunity to steal the game late.
It’s infinity.
It’s infinity.

Most B1G wins over the past 4 seasons:
OSU: 31
Wisc: 27
NW and Mich: 26
PSU: 25
Iowa: 23
MSU: 19
Neb: 15
In that span, NW has won 3 in a row vs. Iowa, 3 in a row vs. MSU, they are 2-2 vs. Wisc, and they are 3-1 vs. Nebraska. They have played PSU, Mich, and OSU once each, and lost each of those.
This is not Hayden Fry's NW team.
But to your point, NW has put 15 players into the NFL under Pat Fitzgerald, and I think Iowa has put 45 in during that same span. So in terms of NFL talent, Iowa probably should beat them most years. But in terms of quality as a college FB team, there are a whole bunch of fanbases out there that think their team should beat NW but end up disappointed.
Not only that but Fitz throws the kitchen sink at Iowa's offensive line, packs the box, and says beat us deep if you can. And KF is so averse to throwing it deep the players have to play in that phone booth.
And if you remember last year Brian Ferentz kept calling all these short 3 yard pass patterns which does not work against NW because they will bump your receivers and then switch off and play an umbrella zone and just out think and out work you. And KF team's tend to melt down against them.
Let's see we know we will lose to Wisconsin, and NW yet again. Then there's the matter of Kirk can't beat Brohm at Purdont. Then I would suspect Big Red Bugeaters (depending on their record) will be all in against the Hawkeyes and odds are that Iowa State beats us. Matt Campbell is too good of Coach to keep losing EVERY year to Kirk. We COULD end up with a losing record this year but I don't think that has happened often with a 3 year starter at QB for Kirk.
I don't disagree with that sentiment at all. We haven't lost a game yet....so I guess you really should be arguing for 12-0 because anything is possible. I just commented based on everything I've seen and read over the past 20 years. It's an opinion which is what we express on here...sometimes backed with facts other times backed with gut feel, and sometimes fueled by frustration or jubilation.Your post starts out listing the teams we will lose to because we always lose to them, then goes on to list the teams we will lose to because we always beat so we are due to lose to them. It's pretty easy to counter that and say we will beat the teams we always beat and will beat the teams we always lose to because we're due.

That usually turns out really well. Many people are saying very good things about Iowa, gonna be the best team in history with the biggest crowds.
Correct...Wisconsin has passed Iowa by, and now Northwestern has...it is true, statistically, despite the denials and deflections of Kirk and company. Only one way to change things! Top notch coaching and recruiting. Wisconsin and Northwestern are enjoying tremendous leadership, vision from the AD to the coaches. Professional machines that had the blinker on while passing Iowa.
