lil lick bashing threads...

The biggest question to me is why Lil Lick is on the floor at the same time as Cully for extended minutes instead of just giving Cully a rest for a few minutes per half. Why wouldn't you put Bawinkel in there to give Gatens/May/Fuller a rest instead of Lil Lick? You can't tell me you'd rather have Lil Lick out there along with Cully, essentially having Lick play the 2.

I would understand if MSU had a full court press going but they werent really even pressuring Cully so he had no problem bringing it up.

Just confusing as to how a red shirt walk on can take minutes from a senior co-captain.

I disagree. Lickliter has done more to spark the team than Bawinkle. No it is not ideal that Lickliter is having to play but that is the reality. Bawinkle has 1/5 games where he knocks down 3/4 3-pointers but otherwise he provides no spark in 4/5 games.

I think we saw last night that Payne is much better when not playing extended stretches. Gatens and May will also get worn down playing 38 minutes every night. Playing lick is about the only option unless you can have Fuller play the 3 position.

I watched "Rudy" last night. Lil' Lick is our Rudy and it's too bad that Tucker doesn't have half of the heart of that kid.

Honestly, the team isn't very good and it's a joy watching the kid give it his all.

other than 1 steal last night what other sparks does he provide? Defenders can sag off of lil lick to go help where as with Bawinkel they never leave him, thus opening up driving lanes.
Lil Lick giving Cully a rest for a few minutes each half is great, but he was out there almost the whole second half last night and was 0-5 from 3.

Please tell me any other Big Ten team JL would see playing time with? Serious question. I think at this point it is pretty sad that he is even an option.

So anyone that disagrees with you is wrong? Does paying to post one's opinion make that opinion more credible?

LOL More often than not, yes, they would be wrong. ;-) However, there are differences of opinion, and then there is patent lunacy--which is what I was responding to.

Being Lickliters son only bothers me because John Lickliter has no business playing B10 basketball - none. I don't know about Neari, but why doesn't he get a shot to play, but Lickliter does? It looks bad in my opinion.

To answer your question, I would still think who is that twirp and why is he on this basketball team? I have never seen someone John Lickliters size and limited altheticism ever play at this level - never.
So if you had the drive or ability to play D1 BB like Lick and you got to see the floor we could all call you names, make fun of your build, your very limited athleticism and you would be ok with that? Or maybe picture your son having your same size and ability as you did but yet he works his tail off to play D1 basketball but his old man calls him names and tells him he doesn't belong just because of his size or ability. If your really 35 years old you are a sad man. Lick is in a similar situation I was in as a HS freshman. A memeber of the varsity was ill and was going to be out for a long while. Well, I was the lucky one to suit up, practice with the varsity, play limited minutes on varsity team along with playing full time on the JV squad. I guess I should have said no because I was a 5'6", 145LB freshman. Give me a break, your excuses are lame and you have a big hard on for both the coach and his deserving son.

Sorry I don't get where you are going with this post. In the world of D1 athletics, not everyone is created equally. A lot of people work hard, that doesn't guarantee anything. It takes talent at this level. That is what we should want and expect.

My point is that John Lickliter has a passion for the game, he has worked hard to get where he is. Just cause he isn't ripped with muscle, can't jump over the rim doesn't mean he isn't deserving of his playing time. If we were all created equal you would have played D1 basketball since you had the same height, quickness and ability as John Lickiliter. But the difference between John and you is that you lacked the drive to play at a D1 level. Your bashing of a kid that has played ball for years, has went to numerous practices, lifted weights, shot thousands of shots, and seems to handle himself well on the court 90% of the time shows how simple you are. If you even grew up watching Hawkeye BB you could think of Jim Bartles and more players that were not the greatest athletes on the roster but they still played a roll on the team. Bottom line is just that, John has a role on the team because of Tucker's suspension no need to bash the kid about it.

You must not have been watching Hawkeye BB very closely yourself, because Jim Bartels was a terrific all-around athlete. He just happened to be slender.

It doesn't help your argument to suggest that there have been other players as physically limited as John Lickliter who've played meaningful minutes for Iowa. I really don't think there have been.

However, the fact is that we need him to play given the current sorry state of our roster, and he doesn't deserve to be ridiculed for that. His father deserves to catch heat for that, but not John.

He would be playing for every team in the big 10 in our same position. I don't know why this is so hard for some of you to understand. If our roster had remained constant he would be our sixth best guard this year. He would be behind (in no particular order) Tucker, Peterson, Davis, Kelly, and Culley.

JL would stack up comparable to most other walk ons in the big 10.

Well put Freddy. I like the heart that John plays with, and as was offered by a previous poster, if Tucker had even half of John's heart and determination, he would be a hell of a player, plus add to that that John has only been a model student, no trouble, and endures the comments quietly. Thats to be applauded. As for his ability to be a legit DI player, no, he really isnt, Wessels would run circles around him, yet here he is, he answers the bell, and there is ( unfortunately )a need. The coach is to blame for the lack of qualified players to fill needs, hopefully that gets rectified, by new players or new coach.

Well Freddy I have followed Iowa Basketball for many years and the only reason I was thinking of Bartels is because I watched the Iowa MSU game from 1993 on Wednesday. My point in the whole thread is that it's pretty lame to call a 19 year old kid out for getting minutes at the D1 level just because he isn't physically imposing or because he is the coaches kid. Might as well get on Bruce Pearl for giving his kid minutes even though they were down to 6 scholarship players. If John looked like a total fool out there I would feel bad for him but he can play and we need his minutes bad.

Ya this pretty much sums it up...Rudy was way overmatched and didn't make any good plays for ND and mini-Lick is way overmatched and doesn't do anything good for the Hawks...Theres no special teams in college basketball...

I thought I saw him steal the ball?

who else had a steal?

With our roster though? I actually like seeing him in there more then Bawinkle. They're both ineffective on defense, yet Lick works harder for the effort steals. He doesn't freeze up like a deer when handed the ball without a look for a three.

His effort is just better then most of our team, I think your underestimating the effect of intangibles and things you can't weigh on a scale. It pushes everyone else to play harder. And on the floor, it seems exactly what he does.

Maybe you're not old enough to remember Troy Skinner, who played for Tom Davis '90-'92. He was actually on scholarship and started. L'il Lick could run circles around him.
