lil lick bashing threads...

Cully had a stretch after he was bowled over and no foul was called. You could tell he was ****** off. Came back on O very aggressive and then turned it over in back to back possessions. Timeout called, Lick took him out. It was a smart move. Cully got his head on straight after Coach Jordan and Coach Walthall talked to him, and did very well the rest of the way.

I believe it was 2 straight and what is your point - big deal. Let the kid play through it.
A true frosh doesn't play through that on the road at the Breslin Center vs. the #7 team in the nation. He needed to sit, if not just for 30 seconds to get his head cleared.

Like Spank has said all ready, it is a big deal, especially when you consider the situation. Payne was obviously frustrated and needed to sit, even if it was just to clear his head and get his focus back.

Fine whatever. It has no bearing on my point.

Your point was that he should have played through it. His head coach thought differently. The fact that Payne played much better after Lick sat him says that he (Lick) made the right decision.

Was there some other point you were trying to make?

I know where you are coming from, but I think all that is a little over rated with a guy like Cully. He is a smart, tough guy. I don't think a couple of bad plays will change his mentality much. I don't really have a problem with sitting him in that instance, but a 30 second time out could be just as effective there if necessary. This really has nothing to do with my reasoning anyway.

Then explain it for us, please. You've said twice previously that he he should have just played through it.

Knighthawk took my original point and twisted it into this discussion. I really don't have a problem with Lickliter spelling Cully in this situation although I don't think Cully was that rattled and could have played through it. It has nothing to do with John Lickliter playing twice the minutes he should which was my original point.

And like I said - and like what happened - Cully played a lot better after he got pulled and got himself straightened out, so it obviously worked.

Fine, I agree he came back and played well. I don't think he would have folded had he not been sit, but whatever... Like I said I really don't have a problem with the call.

if you are not creating plays as a pt gd, then you are hurting the team.

not creating plays, but providing better ball movement VS. lots of dribbling and turnovers.

I will take the first. Payne is going to be a great player, I have said it. He is not very good when making passes, and dribbles A LOT. This will improve as he is a freshmen.

Right now... Lil' Lick (and this is not a degrading name imo, I am sure he is a great kid) provides a lot of excitement... i am pretty sure his standing O in the Purdue game is the only standing O this team has had ALL YEAR. I loved watching this kid go balls out. I think he deserves the playing time he is getting, and he has gotten plenty of love from the btn announcers when doing Iowa games.

Keep in mind... Lil' Lick is a freshmen the same way Payne is... Lil' Lick got zero experience last year, and is a little behind Payne in development. But this is VALUABLE experience that will help the team down the road.

Lickliter will be here next year, and his son may be instrumental in getting this team to take flight. Keep in mind, he knows his dads system like the back of his hand!

"It's a free board...It's a free board...It's a free board...It's a free board."

Nope, I was wrong. It didn't help.

We have 2 guards on the roster right now. TWO. If Tucker were here Little Lick would get little if any minutes at all. You've back tracked from your orignal statment (made here and in other threads) of "he doesn't deserve to see the floor at all" to "he should play to spell Cully but only for a couple min per game and he's playing more than that now".

Let me ask you a question. Name ONE team anywhere in Division I basketball where the #3 guard on the roster (which is what he is without Tucker) plays fewer minuites. One, find one. When you can't then you can ask yourself honestly if you think he is playing too many minuites.

He doesn't deserve to see the floor at all. I understand the reason why he needs to, but that doesn't mean he is deserving.

Don't you think that John Lickliter is the 3rd guard on the roster is a problem? Is that not a coaching problem?? I have nothing against John Lickliter, I'm sure he is a nice kid that would make an ok player for Wartburg, my problem is his dad as a coach.

Haydenshawk, would you please answer me this, if the name on the back of his jersey was Smith, Jones, Clark or whatever besides Lickliter would you still be crying about the amount of playing time the kids gets?

In better circumstances he would be our 6th string guard. 6TH STRING!. Kelley, Davis, Peterson, and Tucker. 4 guys who would be ahead of him for playing time. I don't understand the backlash against him for having to play his son. In order for his son to see any PT at all has taken the perfect storm of players not being able to play. It took 2 transfers by people who felt they didnt fit, one transfer after a death in the family, and one mistake by a kid with substance abuse problems. Is some of that on the coach? Sure, I guess there has to be some culpability on him regarding some of the transfers but it's not like we are in this situation due to lack of planning.

Being Lickliters son only bothers me because John Lickliter has no business playing B10 basketball - none. I don't know about Neari, but why doesn't he get a shot to play, but Lickliter does? It looks bad in my opinion.

To answer your question, I would still think who is that twirp and why is he on this basketball team? I have never seen someone John Lickliters size and limited altheticism ever play at this level - never.

The biggest question to me is why Lil Lick is on the floor at the same time as Cully for extended minutes instead of just giving Cully a rest for a few minutes per half. Why wouldn't you put Bawinkel in there to give Gatens/May/Fuller a rest instead of Lil Lick? You can't tell me you'd rather have Lil Lick out there along with Cully, essentially having Lick play the 2.

I would understand if MSU had a full court press going but they werent really even pressuring Cully so he had no problem bringing it up.

Just confusing as to how a red shirt walk on can take minutes from a senior co-captain.
