Lick's Conference Call Today

Iowa beat NW handily at home and lost handily on the road. That is the first time we have ever seen that in the Big 10?

Iowa beat the worst team in the Big 10 at home. That is what we're going to hang our hat on as far as improvement?

No, Iowa did what the were supposed to do in beating the worst team in the Big 10 at home, no more no less. Nobody who supports Lick is trying to say this win over IU is a big turning point, or that major improvement has been made since the NW loss. However, if any Hawk fan can sit here and say that have not seen improvement in this team and in individuals on this team throughout the year, then they are simply blinded by their disdain for Lick.

You arent seeing any improvement because you dont WANT to see improvement. They are playing better now than they were at the beginning of the season. I'm not talking about the W's and L's or who they are playing, I'm talking about execution.
Considering where this team started, that's not much of a feat.

With that said, isn't improvement from the beginning of the year one of the the most minor expectations you should see? I know fans are searching for positives but that should be a VERY basic thing.

The other thing i hear people crow about is : "Lick has the team playing hard" or "the players gave a great effort". Again, this should be an absolute minimum for coach or player, not something to commend either party for.

I do see improvement with out a doubt. We are better now than we were at the beginning of the season as I imagine that most other teams around the country are better as well.

I like the talent coming in next year but really feel we are playing Russian Roulette with Culley and his back. I would feel much better with a true Point also coming next year along with the other 4.....

Some say there has been zero, zip, nada improvement, either with the team or individuals this year. I say BS to both. As far as a team playing hard for their coach, often times they do not when they quit on their coach. I have read many times on this board this year that the team has given up on Lick and there will be mass transfers. If this team has quit, you might want to get the message to Cully Payne, Matt Gatens, Aaron Fullard Jarryd Cole, Eric May, et al.....

Ever think it may be the other way around. I think alot of fans want to see improvement so bad that they are making it up in their heads. This team is still as god awful as it was to start the year from where I sit.

Not being the worst team in the big ten is certainly an improvement from the beginning of the year.

Has Payne improved?
Has Fuller improved?
Has May improved?
Has Brommer improved?

Has the team moved the ball inside to the post more this season than in the past two seasons?
Has the team played competitively against some really good teams, i.e. Purdue, OSU, Michigan St?
Hell, many of you thought Iowa would not win a game in the conference, so 4 wins should be well past your wildest expectations?

Yes, they have layed some eggs, but that is to be expected from the youngest team in the entire conference.

This team has improved and is developing a good core of players going into next year from where I sit.

wow, all that and our head coach is STILL the lowest winning coach in the history of the school.

I guess I do see some improvement.

When you are talking about the worst team in the history of the program, its tough not to see 'some' improvement.

Tough to see that when you have only won 40% of the games coached under our current lead man.

That is absurd.

Think about it.

Do you honestly think I would post all this negative stuff if I didn't want to see us improve?

Seriously.

Sure, a team full of frosh and sophmores better improve just by playing monster minutes vs college competition, but the question remains, have they improved more than the other teams in the league thru the season?

That is open to question. We did not look like we improved vs NW the other nite...but we did vs IU? More of a matter of scheduling..everyone knew our second half of the league schedule was easier going into the season..so did we improve more than other teams or just play PSU,NW twice,IU and Michigan at home in the second half, making us look better...could be fools gold...lets see how we do this week.

Absolutely. You've stated on record that u were against his hire from the start and that I was right when I said ur negativity was personal. Just from a pure x's and o's standpoint, if u can't see that this team is better now than it was at the beginning of the season then I don't know what to tell you. Look at it this way, I was turning off games at the beginning of the year, now I'm not.....because I can see progress. Am I happy with the results? Absolutely not. TL will be judged ultimately by W's and L's I understand that. But that's not absurd......the fact that you are SO negative and a lot of it based on not even giving the Guy a chance in your head because you were against the hire.......THAT'S the absurd part.

We aren't very good on the road, so it's gonna be hard to gauge improvement this week, but we have definitely become a better home team and at least that is encouraging. Winning on the road is tough, even tougher with a very young team. But if this team can win consistently at home, then at least we know we can have something to look forward to when the team comes back to Carver.

Colorado went 12-3 at home this year and they are at the bottom of the Big 12, Iowa should be able to pull off similar home results next year.

First off... I think Aaron Fuller alone should be enough for anybody to see improvement. I know at the beginning of the season he was injured but I'm not sure anybody would have predicted him becoming one of the "stars" after his freshman year.

Secondly, I think we are missing a quality win. I think if we had one or two quality wins it may change people's perception of the teams improvement. The closest thing we have to a quality win is over NW at home and I think that win became much less impressive after we got crushed in the second meeting.

I don't know where you've been sitting, but I've been sitting in Carver Hawkeye every home game this year, and this team is much better than it was to start the year.

I am against the hiring of Todd Lickliter, that is no secret. I am NOT against loving the Iowa Hawkeyes. I always have and always will bleed black and gold.

112-137: The combined record of the (8) teams Iowa has beaten.
(1): number of those teams with even a remote chance of being selected for the NCAA Tournament
(0): number of those teams who is 1st or 2nd in their respective conference
(2): number of those teams who have less wins than Iowa this season

Since I mentioned having not watched much of this season, I have actually watched a majority of the games following that have followed that statement's date (unless Idol is on because that is priority TV. ha)

(3) of the games, I have been in the stands.

Hard to watch such as a fan. It is March and I have nothing to look forward to outside of an annual vacation.

Thankfully, hitting my FT-9 Tour in the middle of the fairway should help to ease the stress. :)

OK first of all, throw out the schedule. I know they haven't gotten any "signature" wins (for lack of a better word although the NW win is pretty close but again, they're without Coble too). But let's just talk pure x's and o's. You aren't seeing a different team? Well maybe you aren't because like you said, you didn't watch much of the first half of the season. Well I did. I can honestly tell you I think they are playing better basketball. They have their ups and downs (obviously more downs) but they are hitting cutters better, getting the ball inside, playing better defense, rebounding better...you name it. And are they good at those things? Not really. Some times yes, some times no. But at the beginning of the year, they were god awful. That's all I'm saying. I'm not proclaiming they have "turned the corner" because obviously that only happens when you start winning more.

The hope though, is that they don't have to start over again next year. That will go a long way to their progression in building the program. I don't know, it just seems to me that because you are so anti-Lick that you won't even admit you are seeing them play better is all.
