Lickliter's Legacy at Iowa

I thought it would be impossible for someone to be comparative to Dick Shultz, but it happened.

If Lickliter had been given more time, he probably could have helped himself out... but with what has gone down, and Lickliter being done, his tenure at Iowa could (and very well will) be looked upon as the worst ever at Iowa.

I will remember Lick's time as one led by a good person and a good coach who could not keep a player on the team to save his job. If all of the players had stayed, this would be a completely different tenure, but they didn't. In the end, the transfers killed Lick.

I think a lot will depend on how the next 4-5 years goes. If we recover and get back to Mr. Davis levels, then I think Lickliter may be viewed differently......maybe as someone who, while he lost more than anyone in Iowa history, helped to lay the foundation for getting out of the abyss. Otherwise, you're right, he'll go down as the worst ever. We may have to do a "Ten Commandments" type thing....."May the name of Todd Lickliter be stricken from every page......so let it be written, so let it be done!!"

How could it not? Short lived and terrible every step of the way. Iowa didn't know how bad it could be until the last three years. It would have been one thing if we were losing and had a coach that could reassure us that good times were coming... But we got destroyed and then our coach told us this was his best team at Iowa. The man won the lottery by coming to Iowa. He'll walk away a rich man while our program burns.
 
I was just going to post a reply which is basically what you just said. The first thing that came to my mind when I saw this thread was "The worst coach in the history of Iowa Basketball". The record speaks for itself. Lickliter is the new Dick Schultz.
 
I'm probably most surprised at the alleged communication issues with his players. We can all debate recruiting and style of play, but the stories of his lack of communication with players is shocking for someone who has had some success at a decent level.
 
As I did a month ago, Lickliter is really most comparable to Frank Lauterbar, as each led Iowa the their worst three-year record in history, with year three being the worst in school history.

Bump Elliot eventually recovered from his bad early hires (Lauterbar, Schultz, Commings), so hopefully Gary Barta does as well.

I never take joy in any person losing their job, but this firing had to be done.
 
I don't mean for this to be a Lickliter basking thread, that's not what I intended. He doesn't deserve it either.

With the his era over, though, it's amazing that it can be classified as one of, if not the, worst coaching period ever in Iowa BB history.
 
Lets just hope the next guy is not Commings following Lauterbur...we need to skip a coach and get right to our BB Hayden,please!!
