Lick fired?

If Lick is truly done as Iowa's coach, as another poster stated, my respect for Barta took a big leap upwards. Granted, there probably are lots of fans, donors, past players and perhaps current players that are very unhappy and vocal about wanting Lick gone, but to actually make this move on a timely bassis in order to get the program moving forward again, shows me that he is willing to make the tough and smart moves.

That is total BS Ghost and you know it. It is one hire that didn't work out that was shown the door. When Alford left Lickliter was Iowa's 3rd coach in 20 years.

Nice way to skew statistics but no one is buying what you're selling.

You beat me to it, Springsteen. Before Lickliter, our previous coaches were here for 13 and 8 years, respectively. ONE coach being shown the door after the worst record in Iowa history doesn't mean that it is a revolving door. It's actually been quite the opposite for the previous 20 years.

When Alford left, wasn't he the 2nd most tenured coach in the Big Ten behind Tom Izzo?

Technically speaking, Ghosts' math is right. Alfords last year is year 1 + 3 years of Lickliter + new coach = 5 years.

But your (and anyone else who made it) point is spot on; if Iowa basketball is anything, it's not a revolving door.

I have a hard time believing they would have a meeting today with players. The only way I would believe that is if Lick were not on the bench today. So I am highly skeptical.

Agreed. This does not strike me as something you do when the team is getting ready to compete in the BTT in a matter of hours.

It may or may not be the right thing to do. But there is nothing classy about firing a guy 3 years into a 7 year contract. It is embarassing, pure and simple.

The timing of this makes me skeptical.

There is no reason any of this needed to happen (with any public knowledge) before tomorrow.

I don't buy that there were team meetings without Lick and that a decision to terminate Lick has been made and (secretly) revealed to certain folks the day of or before the (likely) last game of the season.

All of this thread is hearsay rumor mill run amuck.

If Barta has made this decision and it's played out like this, then I lose respect for Barta. Not because of the decision itself, but how the decision has been handled.

This rumor thread may be ********, but look at how many people have looked at it or posted on it.

I bet this thread stays at the top of the list all day today.

People love gossip. And hawk fans are ready for a change.

So the worst winning percentage in Iowa history doesn't factor in at all? You let the coach fulfill most or all of his contract no matter the result? I disagree completely.

22 loss seasons are embarrassing. An empty Carver-Hawkeye Arena is embarrasing. God I hope these rumors are true.

There is also nothing classy about basically stealing money for 3 years either.

If your job performance led to the worst 3 year history of your company would you still have a job?

If the reason given for keeping him around another year has anything to do with it being the right thing to do because he has a seven year deal, someone else would need to be fired on the spot. That is what the buyouts are for. You can call them getting fired insurance which is what they are. The length of the contract is only material in college athletics as it relates to the number of years and amount of the buyout

Who would that be? Barta? Gary Barta isn't getting fired.
