Murph and Andy made the point on Soundoff that the "Let's Be Mad Again" slogan is not very catchy. The site name doesn't seem to immediately convey thoughts of Iowa Basketball or March Madness.

Don't care if it is catchy. I am mad about Iowa bb. I want to go back to the tourny. I want Carver to be rocking again. I want energy and enthusiasm and student rooting sections with signs and craziness ..I even want midnite madness....I am mad. Bring it back,Fran.

I just care about the sentiment, because a slogan isn't getting this program back to the bracket.

Using and inherently "negative" term to promote anything is risky marketing. "Mad" is not exactly a word I would have chosen considering the way fans have felt about the program in recent years.

It's the kind of promotion that Iowa fans give ISU fans a hard time about. That being said, in these times, I think it's a great idea. I have no idea how well it will work. Iowa fans may have a wait and see attitude with this coach or may buy in. Probably somewhere in the middle.

I would advise you to not listen to Murph and Andy, unless you want your IQ to go down.

This could be said about listening to any radio program. You have to remember that these guys are on the radio to entertain, not necessarily inform their listeners with the best info. One example that was astonishing to me was that the Miller guy from Matt and Miller did not know that men and women used different sized basketballs. How you can get a job in sports and not know something like that is truly amazing to me.

Yeah the slogan itself...

is not all that great. But like a gift from your kids, it's the thought that counts. They (by they, I mean the administration/support staff at the UI) are at least putting on a good-faith effort to revive the program. The marketing blitz and the initial press conference from Fran were good starts that created good will.

The team has to back it up with some improvement and winning, but it now at least appears that everyone involved with the program (administration, staff, former players, roster) are all pulling in the general direction. That hasn't always been the case, basically since Davis' situation played out. It probably took a decade of time plus the two subsequent coaching eras to expunge all the bitterness and bring the fan base together. Hopefully that has occurred.

Why are we posting things that have already been discussed 3 days ago. Who cares? It's a phrase. It's not meant to bring the program back to life in and of itself. If you don't like it....great. If you like it......great. Just GO HAWKS!

Anyone remember The Madness, that Ska 2-Tone band from the late 70's?

They were awesome.

Carry on.
Out intramural teams in college were named Madness for the band of 'Welcome to the House of Fun' and 'One Step Byond' fame. That was in the early to mid 80's during the MTV played videos phase. :)

Working in the communications/writing/marketing field I (as many of you) can admit this may have not been my first choice for a new slogan ... However, I like the effort. Why? Because it is getting people excited again. Words are words. I just like the fact the U of Iowa is making an effort to get fans to come back to Carver.

Yes, ultimately, it will come down to wins and losses. But, there is a way to market the program to get fans interested again. So, I give the U of Iowa an "A" for at least trying. There has been more buzz about Iowa basketball in the past three weeks than the past three years. This is a great time to build on that momentum ... Personally, I was compltely tuned out on Iowa basketball. And, I hated that I had become that way but after 9 seasons of failed expectations under Alford, and then three more under Lick, I just had enough.

This is time for hawkeye nation to rally. I, for one, will be piling my behind (and rounding up some friends) in the car this fall and making the trek to Iowa City to see and get excited about Iowa basketball again ...

A lot rides on Caff, but a lot also rides on the fans to get behind the program ... Go Hawks!

I liked the effort as well...but the results fell way short of the mark. We were already "mad" so there's no need to be "mad again"...I would've preferred something like "Yes, we're mad! Now let's get even!" If they were going to use "mad" at all.

"Let's Get Mad again: March MADness" or something like it would have been better.

BUT, mad props for the Coach or Ath Dept or UofI --- whomever decided to reach out and touch Hawkeye fans!
