Let's be honest!

It’s almost like Fran and the staff coached .... wait for it ..... Defense. Ya know something that will never happen until Fran is fired 3 days ago.

I think Franny Mac's kid might have been the missing link. He's better and more versatile at point than Bohannon, who's really a shooting guard.

Yes, indeed, he is the best true point guard we have had in a long time. I like the fact that he is shooting the ball, taking it to the basket, making it and/or getting free throws. One of the main knocks on him was poor shooting without any evidence, but he has proved otherwise.....

His passing ability speaks for itself. When he and Bohannon and JoeW get into a groove things will be very good. We could be a nightmare to stop with Garza and Cook playing as they have been. There is a tremendous upside for the Hawks.....

Much better than I had hoped in my wildest dreams. It all depended on playing solid D and somehow these Lads have done that very well. We contest the three very well and fight for the ball inside, getting rebounds that we didn't have a chance to do last season.....

It's all good.....

Connor has impressed me so far. The thing that I've noticed the most is how physical he is. Last year guards could just out physical the guys we had playing the point (Jordon, Brady, Dailey). That isn't going to happen with Connor, he is stronger than most other players that will be guarding him at the PG position.

These two games were team wins. Cook, Garza, JBo, CMac, all played well. Kreiner, Baer, Moss, Dailey, Till, Weiskamp, all put in quality minutes. We will be a little deeper when Pemsl heals up. Barring injuries, this team looks and feels different than last year. Congrats Hawks and keep it up!

Don't want to be a Debbie downer but it will be interesting to see if Iowa keeps getting the foul calls once league play begins and the middle school refs are in action. If they do this team can go places. If it's the usual no calls in the paint and stupid ticky tac stuff on the outside called all day I dunno.
Only if Tom Izzo says so.

In the Oregon game, isn’t the short-hispanic gene- statutore-wanna-be a Big10 ref? That guy loves him some limelight. And he’s not good.

If Bohannon starts shooting good again (which I assume will happen) and Wieskamp becomes a big contributor (which I also assume will happen) that's going to be an incredible starting 5 come big 10 play with Cook, Garza, and Connor.

Hmm, you bring up an interesting question. I think Connor has earned to be in the discussion to start over Moss but I'm not so sure it's a given that he will. Moss starting at the 2 allows Fran to stagger the PG minutes a bit and allows both Connor and Jordan to be in the game at the same time without both needing a breather.

Fran has started 2 PGs in the past with MG and Sapp back in 2015-2016 and that team didn't have the option of a Moss coming off the bench (they were lacking a solid guard off the bench). They instead had a young Christian Williams playing spot minutes at PG when both MG and Sapp were winded.

It'll be interesting to see how Fran handles the minutes at the 1 & 2 moving forward. No matter who starts below is how, as of right now, I believe the minutes should be distributed.

McCaffery - 30 mpg
Bohannon - 30 mpg
Moss - 20 mpg
Dailey - 10 mpg
Wieskamp - 25 mpg
Baer - 20 mpg
Cook - 30 mpg
Garza - 25 mpg
Kriener - 10 mpg

Pemsl/Till play the spot minutes when needed due to foul trouble etc.

You could take 5 from McCaffery and give them to Dailey but I'm not as high on him as some others, probably because I'm more of a numbers guy. He's shown some flashes but really hasn't been all that efficient in his career up to this point.

I'll admit, I expected some improvement, but, they look better than I thought they would.

From an individual player standpoint, I actually don't see a ton of improvement. What I do see is much more cohesiveness and togetherness, both elements that have been drastically needed the last two seasons. Kudos to Fran for getting this team to buy in.

Connor is an outstanding addition. He's a steadying influence and smart. I'm not really that surprised there - I kind of expected him to do well. Cook also looks more assertive and is actually moving his feet on defense. When he plays under control, he's a load, but "under control" is the key with him.

Where did this come from?! The team chemistry is fantastic, Fran seems to be playing the right combination of guys. (hate to say this, but I think Pemsl should be out of the rotation). Connor was a beast last night, kid can ball. The mix of zones works on D.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t see this coming. I had lost faith in Fran, but this was a huge step in the right direction. I think if JOBO gets right (just seems a little off, maybe injury) and the young guys continue to grow we will surprise some people this year. A long way to go to that but can’t ask for a better start.

the switch needs to be made to start connor and have jbo move to sg and start there. the offense is much smoother with connor running the point. connor can actually bring the ball up court by himself and doesn't get trapped in the front court because he can't dribble. folks, jbo simply cannot dribble drive past any defenders; whereas, connor can. ain't saying connor is cat quick, but he as the ability to use the dribble to set up a move to get by his defender.

hd, i felt that way towards the end of last season. in fact, i think pemsl miscalculated returning to iowa if he wants to play.

I like what's happening just like most of you, but 18 TO and Ucon 11 steals is going to hurt when BT play starts. Cannot believe how many FT we are shooting. Great wins. Keep it up Hawks.

Who on this team hasn't improved? Pemsl is hurt and hasn't suited up as of yet. I think I for one will wait and see him in action first before claiming he isn't any good!

And it is great work by the players to all buy in as well. The great thing is now the coaches have tangible evidence to point to the players of what playing tough defense all game long can do for them.

He hired a defensive specialist in the offseason, didn't he?

The foul calls will be what they are going to be. Can't control that. My fear is that this team won't have the will to continue to play defense like they did in NY. It's easy for players to slide back into doing what's comfortable. I hope the team leaders and the coaches continue to hold them accountable to do the right things on the court. Time will tell.

Pemsl is a great kid and a good player, but the best path for him may be at a smaller school. Unfortunate...but likely true.

I can't believe how many FT's Iowa is MAKING!

Bohannon is shooting 85.2% from the line and 4 guys are shooting better than that. That's nuts.

Last season the team shot 69.5%, so far this season 78.4%. Man I hope they keep it up. This is fun to watch! Go Hawks!

Exactly what I was thinking.. the refs were calling actual fouls for us, doubt it continues in B1G play.. BAU
How do three refs miss a ball bounce off a guys foot when I saw it in real time from my couch? Plus when Hurley got the T I saw the foul right away . He had a right to lose it

Only if Tom Izzo says so.

Agreed on Larry, he is awful, he booted Fran last year and the next night T'd up John Belien, I thought JB was gonna get tossed. That ref should not be an official, has anyone ever seen him call a consistent game?
