Let Tim Lester Locate Portal QB

Basically, I want to have our own Brock Purdy. He didn't go to an FCS, but he was not heavily recruited. He is not big, he is not crazy fast, he doesn't have a huge arm. But he is a damn good QB (even though he lost to Iowa 4 times). If we had a Brock Purdy over the past 4 years, we would have been a playoff contender each year.

Well actually we kinda have... Richman, Jones Colby, Stephens all just did with Dunker included... They played a lot last yr and again this yr. Granted I'm no fan of our Oline coach either but the Oline did ok this yr. Pretty sure KJ would give them his stamp of approval.

Next yr will be interesting and back to playing some new guys. Jones I've heard is on the fence for coming back and that'd be huge.
Most/all of those guys had to play before they were ready. It paid off this year but the last couple were rough. A combination of injuries and recruiting misses put Iowa in that place.

I thought his little brother looked okay at Nebraska.

I don't know, I am concerned about the 4th school in 4 years thing, as well as the fact that he already had 2 shots at earning time at a P4 school, and he left in both instances.

My perfect profile (as unrealistic as it may be), is a guy who was under-looked in HS (maybe because he was a multi-sport guy, maybe he was too short or slight, maybe just from a small school and he didn't do the camp circuit). He went to an FCS school, and he was just undeniable Ends up starting by the end of his freshman year, comes back, and really shows out as a soph. He plays in a balanced offense that requires him to throw to all levels. I don't care about a cannon arm, and I do not care about a pro-style offense. I want someone with timing, anticipation, and accuracy who has a history of making plays at the collegiate level.
Yeah I'd have been more on board with him coming on the previous time he'd transferred more so than now. I'd like a player with multiple yrs to play too. No 1 yr rentals. We aren't 1 yr away from making big waves I don't think so why do that? A kid with 2-3 yrs to play that can push Sully would be ideal

We had him. His name was Drew Tate. Best QB of the KF era IMO. We should be looking for his clone.

He actually had offers from Alabama and Texas A&M, but ISU was on him early and it paid off.

I'd stay far away from Moss... He's below avg size not mobile doesn't have the greatest arm. Was coached for multiple yrs by the QB guru Riley at USC and still didn't set the world on fire. Only has 1 yr left to play I think. I'm of the thinking if a QB that's as highly touted as he was coming out of HS can't develop under Riley learning behind Williams and then playing with 5 star WRs all over the place throwing 50 times a game then I'd take a pass. Let Louisville get him. There's gonna be lots of better options and ideally we should be looking for QB with multiple yrs of eligibility. Not a 1 and done rental
I think this is the big key with these portal players. Investing for only one year of service. No thanks.

I’d like to find an experienced starter from a bigger brand school who has led their team to the playoffs

I suspect there is a QB playing in the FCS playoffs who could be a nice fit for Iowa.

Situationally I can see it. If we were a QB away from being a playoff/championship level team then you bet break the bank. We aren't in that situation. OC going into yr 2 of a total rebuild of the offense doesn't lend itself to wanting to get a 1 and done QB rental it just doesn't. I kinda like the idea of building around Sullivan for next yr. Snag a kid with 2 or 3 yrs to play in the portal that can develop along with Jimmy Sullivan and go from there.

I hate saying it, but with our stable of wideouts I'm not sure you break the bank to bring in a QB. Almost think we might be better off buying some stud receivers hoping to improve enough in the passing game to bring in some attention and attract future QBs. Either way I'm not sure how we get one or the other when we need both to function efficiently.

Sure. To be a QB away like I'd described that'd mean we had a stud WR or two and clearly we still need that yet too. I'm not sure we have one on the roster atm that can develop into one. We are pretty young at the position though besides Gill and Anderson it's mostly underclassman. Maybe RVZ can I like his size just needs to get stronger, quicker you name it.

Swing and a miss on getting the PSU kid he's going to Mizzu. Rumor is he was asking for 1.5 million for his services. Be it for 1 yr or 2 I don't know. I'm ok missing out on him. They'll be a better fit available I would think. Even if we don't land him till after the spring portal.

The kid had his 'agency' announce his decision so in his case it was probably largely a financial decision and if that's all it was for him then so be it.

I read that he had selected Mizzou but hadn't seen any numbers. That's a lot to pay for an unknown commodity. I'm sure we went all in but sometimes you just have to let them go when the bidding gets too high. I would have liked to have had him but I don't think losing out is the end of the world.

Well he's played some anyway he's not total unknown anyway. I suspect that even if Iowa matched the NIL offer he wasn't picking us. We woulda had to significantly outbid. Cause why would a QB pick us? The stink of BF is still on this program and QB room. Until Lester show's that he can develop a QB and a passing game we are easy to recruit against in that regard. And that'll take time. Especially since he cleared out the QB room of BF recruits.

Qbs are delusional and all want to do 3 things. Make $ play early and go to the NFL. Evidently we aren't able to get QBs rich and pointing to CJB as an NFL qb for proof of us being able to do that aren't enough. It's just gonna take us time to overcome all that was BF it just is

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/60...rbacks-recruiting/?source=user_shared_articleThe tricky game of evaluating QBs out of the transfer portal: ‘So many things you don’t know’

“The guys who have played, no matter what level they’ve played at, they may not be a great quarterback, but they’re probably a pretty good player,” he said. “If you’re a pretty good player at D2, FCS or Group of 5, it’ll probably translate at the next stop up. It does translate. Like what Indiana did with (Kurtis) Rourke. He was a good player at Ohio. Guess what, he was a good player at Indiana. The risk is taking the guy who hasn’t played as much.”

Interesting take…
