The entire Hawkeye offense couldn't get the playbook down after 8 months of Davis last year, but Powell is supposed to have it perfected in 5 weeks.

Didn't you hear? Last year's offense only sucked because JVB was a terrible quarterback who never belonged on a B1G roster.

Running backs who have played 4 years include Paki Omera, Damian Sims, Laddel Betts, Robbie Crockett, Sam Brownlee, I am sure there are a few more. Young and Schnoor could be on the list but missed most of 2004 due to injury. All those guys played in the past 15 years. Thein played 4 years also but half his career at fb.

I'll definitely grant you Betts, and even though Sims split carries, he played enough to be considered a healthy 4-year player. O'Meara, Brownlee, and Crockett all played very, very limited roles (the 3 had a combined 10 rushes their redshirt freshman years) which enabled them to stay healthy.

So, in the last 15 years, Iowa has had 2 RBs who played significant roles at the position and were contributors four consecutive seasons. Like I said, look over the past 15 years and see the number of RBs who have played 4 consecutive seasons. You'll have the answer to the question of why his shirt was burned.

I wouldn't say JVB was the only reason the offense sucked. Thats a little harsh. Maybe say he was the main reason they sucked.

I just don't get why KF burned his shirt. I am fine if they thought he was going to be the #2 or #3 back, but he didn't get a single carry against Minny. I just wonder if the 12 carries he has throughout this year will be that beneficial to him in the future? Or would having an extra year of eligibility have been more beneficial? Maybe learning from that fumble was a great thing for him, I don't know. Maybe he becomes a huge part of the offense due to injury or limiting Weisman. I can see advantages both ways, but would have loved to see him get a carry or 2 on Saturday.

The game of football is like Chess, especially when it comes to how you manage redshirts and players ability to contribute and forecast the needs moving forward. If you redshirt Ld then in 3 years from now possibly u miss out on a stud because he would be buried in the depth chart. Look at Jordan Canzerri he had to redshirt out of sequence due to an injury, hell somtimes the rs backs get hurt in practice and a stud never sees the field or returns to form. I rip on KFC for a lot of things, but not red shirting a player isn't on that list. However I would like to see LD get some meaningful reps moving forward.

Because neither of those excuses are plausible for a guy who arrived on campus, just days before camp, after spending two years doing hardly anything but running deep routes.

I'm not saying those excuses aren't true. I'm just saying they are ridiculous reasons to keep Powell off the field. When you have a guy who is that big ofa playmaker, you find ways to get him on the field. If he only knows a handful of plays, run those plays specifically for him to get him 5 touches or so a game.

When I originally watched is touchdown last week it looked so easy that I thought anyone could have scored. When I saw it again I realized how quickly he accelerated after catching the ball. Most of our receivers would have picked up about 8 yards on that play. I think that's worth missing the occasional block.

The played looked easy because we caught Minnesota in the perfect call on a screen, when they rushed 6 and left 5 guys to defend the pass. We had more blockers for the screen than they had defenders. Pretty much every WR on Iowa's roster would have had a huge gain on the play. Powell's speed turned it into a sure-thing TD.

This is a "tank" thread take your Powell comments over to the Powell thread one of you should start. There is also the thread about him needing to be on the field more you could contribute to as well. Thanks guys.

I thought so at first too but after watching it again I noticed a defender missed him by a step about 8 yards down field. Without a clean catch and quick burst after it would have been a short gain.

I know what player you're referring to, and I don't think its clear if he would have caught other WRs. Either way, I agree that Powell is a great guy to have on the team.

Yea I agree it wasn't a for sure thing that other receivers would have been caught. But he had to be quick to beat the defender there.

Not gonna read the whole thread, but Morehouse gives some pretty solid reasoning at the end of this article.

That, and for those that watch games, he made some mistakes against Mizzo St. Even with the mistakes KF has said he'll be playing a lot by the end of the season. I run Rudy's Taco because I'm good at running a business. KF coaches football, and the market dictates he gets paid a lot, because he is good at it. Notwithstanding those that think he isn't good at it. When it is broken down this much it really is pretty simple.
