Legitimate thoughts around poor (to date) recruiting results

I love it, its always wait till next year after Iowa made the NCAA Tournament. Y'all sound like Cub fans, always on the come but never today. If you are in sales (which recruiting is), tell your boss that next year I'll make the sales after I've established myself and see if you still have a job. This years class is not critical, but drop the excuses for a poor job at closing the sale with Iowa's top tier recruits. Recruiting is not completely over yet, but if Uhl and Miller spurn the Hawks, then you can mark this season's recruiting efforts down as an F, in terms of getting guys Fran really wanted. And I will also point out that Fran is 0-1 vs. Hoiberg, and 0-2 against Buzz Williams, when they've gone head to head for a recruit. Thus, so far the staff has yet to demonstrate they can win a recruiting battle against schools no better than Iowa, except for in-state type recruits. Otherwise, Fran & Company has done a great job of turning this program around, but to sustain his success, imo, he is going to have to find a way to get some of his top tier choices to choose Iowa. You are only going to go so far relying on under the radar type recruits and Aaron White successes are few and far between.

Fran kicked Hoiberg's *** on the court where it matters most. In fact, I believe he beat Hoiberg's band of 5th year players starting 3 freshman. Damn. How will we ever beat that Hoiberg guy again?

Well I'd prefer to make it as easy as possible on ourselves. With their HS class this year and still being solidly in for Vaughn and Cunningham in 2014 on top of the 4 star they already had commit it might be a long time before we beat that Hoiberg guy again if we can't add anyone decent. Gesell and Woodbury falling in to your lap is only going to happen once in 10 years (maybe).

I put Hoiberg's chances at landing BOTH Vaughn and Cunningham at about 5%. I actually kind of doubt he lands either. Vaughn is prepping in Nevada, and UNLV is getting in tight with him, plus UNLV just signed another 5* recruit. They had the #1 NBA draft pick last year, a one and done. Plus it sounds like Vaughn had some sort of knee injury that will require surgery.

Fran had to work his @ss off to land both Gesell and Woodbury, neither one of them fell into his lap. I highly doubt either of them would be at Iowa with the previous coaching staff.

i think i started a thread about how hard Fran had to work to land Gesell. apparently this dude didn't read it.

Exactly. Gesell wasn't even an Iowa fan. Plus Fran beat out motherfing UNC and Roy Williams. People act like this is nothing. At the time Fran beat him out, he was a brand new coach, with a sh!tty program to turn around. That was a great recruiting job to get those guys to come to Iowa.

That's not the point I'm making. Falling in to his lap as in being in Iowa, or in Gesell's case basically in Iowa. Close to home impact players aren't going to come around very often just in terms of there not being any in general. It's going to be a lot harder to bring in 4 and 5 star top 100 guys that have ZERO familiarity with the state or school. Geezus calm yourselves and have a think.

Every time I can see you kool aid drinkers just getting with each other like a bunch of non-educated, drunk Bostonians after a local radio host just said that Pedro wasn't as big of a deal as Mariano.

"Oh my gowd you don't jsut get on the radio and say that. We're gonna kill this radio guy nobody talks about Gawd like that so no one should talk about the Sax like that."

I really thought the 2014 class would be somewhat of a breakthrough, especially based on an NIT championship appearance. What has unfolded is well below even my lowest bar expectations. There is no way that anyone can convince me that CHA, the facilities, Iowa City, BTN coverage, big ten conference exposure, etc., are so abhorrent that we cannot land kids. I keep reading how much kids like McCaffrey, but don't we have 3 assistants that should be delivering results by now? Geez, we are basically chasing juco crumbs now to get a PG in the class and have thus far only landed Oglesby Lite.

Getting Uhl makes this a very good class (and I'm sure there is one more). People need to relax and believe in Coach Fran. This guy knows what he is doing

When you say falling in his lap you are basically saying it did not take much effort to get them to come to Iowa. If you meant something else then you should have used different words. Even as I read you trying to convince me that is not what you meant you still are basically saying that it was easy since they were from, or close to, Iowa. Gesell has even said he was a huge Nebraska fan growing up. While Woodbury might have grown up to be an Iowa fan passing up an opportunity to play for Roy Williams and, potentially, a national championship at North Carolina was huge.

lmao, for the most part the regulars here are pretty well educated and are not afraid to call something out when it does not look right. You make yourself look like an idiot calling the Hawk fans here "kool aid drinkers". I will give you a little credit, your previous post was as close as I've seen you attempt to partake in a topic. Usually you just have some snarky comment about someone or making sarcastic remarks. Go back to the football board, they appreciate you more over there.

Yeah, those 4 and 5 star top 100 guys in-state are so easy to land, right? Ask Harrison Barnes... Or Marcus Paige... Or Doug McDermott...

tl;dr

i'm still holding out hope for the "illegitimate recruiting thoughts" thread.

This was that thread from the beginning, just mistitled by ted.

Here is the thing with Uhl though, his offers weren't that good, he is a 3* and I don't feel he is the Harrison Barnes, or JUCO type athlete (thinking of you 136).

Really, 2 non-ranked 3 stars make it a very good class? Look up Ohio States commitments for this year once. That will reveal the truth to you REAL fast.

I never said it was easy I'm saying it was EASIER.

Maybe SSC is right, the knowledge on this bball board is just ridiculously high. I'll go back to the football board now and discuss our 5 star top 100 RB Mark Weisman.

That's a lie and you know it.

Yes, it makes it a very good class. I don't care about Ohio State. I care about Iowa and what Iowa needs to continue to improve. You don't know what you're talking about if your contention is that Iowa's recruiting classes should be compared to Ohio State, Kentucky, Duke, etc. at this point in time. I care about what Iowa need to keep the program moving in the right direction and improving.

Side Note - Let's see how our incoming class compares to Ohio State's when they're juniors. Will Ohio State's guys even be playing in the Big Ten or will they be gone? Will those players be better than when they arrived? I am confident that Fran will have made his recruits much better basketball players.
