LaVall Jordan

Heard him on local radio today. In my opinion he's the most impressive individual on our coaching staff. Walthall would be the second most impressive. Oddly enough, of the three our head coach seems to be the guy least suited to the recruiting and public relations aspects of the job. I've never heard anything from Coach Cornette, other than that someone who would know describes him as a "harda$$."

I find it hard to understand why more recruiting successes haven't been associated with Coach Jordan. There have been some tidbits here and there suggesting that he and the head coach don't always agree on what prospects to pursue, but that's not unusual. Chasson Randle does credit LaVall as the reason for his interest in Iowa.

He is not a bad dresser either. Did you see that black on black with the gold tie last night? Pretty schnazzy if you ask me.

Freddy recruiting in basketball today revolves around AAU connections. Nobody on this staff has any. That is going to sink Lick...tough to make connections when other programs have in's through their AAU contacts.

That's not true. I think Iowa is pretty hooked in to Rising Stars, 43 Hoops, Spiece in Indiana (although we havn't landed a recruit from them yet), and the Iowa AAU clubs.

Not meaning to hijack your thread Freddy, but during the timeouts (one in OT in particular), I've noticed Lickliter does a lot of discussing with his assistant coaches before talking to the players. In the OT timeout, the other coach came to Lickliter and appeared to be the one dictating what should happen.

I would think Lickliter would know what he wanted done when he called the timeout and wouldn't need to input from the other coaches. Am I interpreting what's happening incorrectly?

I don't think this is unusual at all. I've seen it in many games involving ranked teams. The HC wants the input of his assistants -- What are they seeing? What mismatches can we exploit? (Conversely, who do we need to switch up?) Who needs a breather? -- before talking to the team. It also gives the players a chance to grab some water, towel off, take a breath or two, etc. before engaging with the coach.

MANY coaches talk with their asistants during timeouts. He is collecting info/feedback from them in various areas. Possibly the coach you mention was one who scouted Michigan.

Regarding earlier comment about Cornette, he was interviewed after starting the job and I think his comments/approach was as impressive as others. No idea how he does in actual practices with coaching though.

LaValle also does an excellent job of communicating with the players during the games. Positive reinforcement type of communication I mean.

The simple truth is they can't be hooked up to anyone if they can't recruit any of their kids.
