Latest ESPN Top 100 - Woody and Gesell still there

We sure as hell didn't accomplish much under Alford. And I didn't say I was disappointed with the job Davis did. But he was run out of town to get the program to the next level. Obviously, a lot of people felt the program's growth had stunted and were getting frustrated.

Dude, I know you're young and were not there, because this was not the case.

And it's the meaning of those two games that's important, not that winning an NIT game, in and of itself, is better than making the Dance.

Ok, dude, now I know you're not taking this seriously!

The NWST loss was the symbol of the Alford tenure. The NIT win is the first tangible sign of life from the program, and we have a lot of momentum moving forward now.

There was a TON of hype coming into the Alford era. His first two seasons, with the opening win against UCONN, winning 4 in the BTT, and the huge recruiting classes was 10x more exciting than our 17 win NIT appearance. Sorry, but it just was.

The first part is exactly what happened. Obviously Bolsby wouldn't and couldn't have pulled the plug on Davis if most fans hadn't felt the program had plateaued and wanted to get to the "next level"

Yes there was a ton of hype for Alford primarily because people were ready for a change.

Yes there was allot of excitement for Alfords first class but after Recker went down and everything fell apart, excitement was tempered big time. The BTT salvaged the momentum though.

I would say the only point in Alfords time that fans were more excited about the program than now was preceding his third season but three straight NITs and Piere Peirce followed anything after PP#2 is not even debatable.

Iowa fans try to dumb down our recruits for whatever reason.

I've seen this go the other way too - like certain folks that were also excited about every single one of Lick's recruits:

"Great get!"
"This kid is the real deal!"

Stuff like that. Then two years later:

"Nobody wanted these kids except mid-majors, and Iowa"
"We don't have any D1 talent on our roster"

Guess I'll defer to Fran's judgment with his scholly offers, since he seems so far to have a real good eye for underrated talent. Aaron White is exhibit 1A. If Fran is offering scholarships to 2-3* players, than I suspect he thinks they are underrated and sees something in their game that he really likes, and that's good enough for me.

Woody at #39 in the country.. Well, either he really is that good, or everyone out there has grossly mis-evaluated him. It doesn't mean he will come in as a true freshmen and be All-Big Ten or anything, but I think it's ridiculous at this point to call Woodbury a "project" as I've heard some people say. I don't know too many projects rated Top 40 in the country.

However, Alford was such a devisive figure for so many people that you automatically had 50% or so of the fanbase that was never really all that excited for the program and it's direction.

That's crap. People were behind Alford his first few years, VERY much so. I was at the Black & Gold blowout just before the highly anticipated (and just as disappointing) 2001-02 season (year 3), and it was standing room only. All of that for just an exhibition game. But you make it sound like the fan base was only luke warm towards Alford at that point. That simply was not the case. Our fanbase was jacked and ready to go - unfortunately there wasn't a lot to cheer about the better part of the next 5 years.

Alford only became "divisive" once the losing started, and throw Pierre Pierce in on top of that - the first Pierce incident coming right after the disastrous year 3 that I just mentioned, and it was a perfect storm of circumstances for the fan base to quickly start turning against him.

The first couple years, people didn't seem to mind Alford's arrogance. Maybe it's considered "swagger" when you're winning? But when you're losing, all of that stuff starts to wear out its welcome.

If Fran doesn't win, he will lose fan support, too. It doesn't matter if he's arrogant or not. Lick was anything but arrogant, and there were very few people that didn't want him gone when his 3rd year was coming to a close.

so when is herby back so he can come up with some way that this is the national recruiting evaluators downgrading iowa. i know their ranking went up but you have to think herby will have some way to try and spin it.

herby may have gotten a perma ban.

when was this? i just figured he had been banned because i hadnt seen his posts in a while. didnt think he would take it far enough for a perma ban.

Agree 100%. Teh herby should have immunity from bannings.

Ha,ha... I agree, I always look for a Herby post!

Hopefully he will rise from the depts of banning and come back reincarnated! it has been done before...

DrgonHawk > Herbyhawk > ?

Ummm, because we were a pretty bad team last year.

/not sure if question is serious...

Not so much.

No real depth and only one senior with a clue, Jr. class from last year was non-existient as well.

Iowa won't have to rely on all the underclassmen next season to have breakout seasons, there is proven talent on the roster.

Top 25 worthy, hardly, but not bad.

Not only was the team bad, but the excuses were bad too.

Okay, after the next season we will talk. By your logic, correct me if I am wrong, Iowa will be bad again next season. Iowa loses it best player from a bad team and will have five freshman and one can't expect freshman to turn the program around. The returning players that Iowa has are bad as well.
Iowa was a train wreck in the non-conference, but they went 8-10 in conference play, so was the conference bad then as well? Keep in mind Iowa didn't start playing well until Marble began to breakout and give Iowa stability at the PG spot, which was needed.
Iowa's roster and overall talent is a direct result of the previous coaches failures in recruiting and player retention, so how is that a bad excuse that Iowa had only one viable player in its Jr/Sr classes? When Cartwright was under control he was okay, but not a top shelf PG. Who came off of Iowa's bench that contributed anything outside of White/Basabe/Oglesby during the season, two freshman and a sophomore?
