Kirk's last season?

Someone that's as close to the situation as you can be, other than Mary, said that they would be surprised if he retires in the next 5 years.
He'd be 73. Unless you're a fossil at the end like Joe Pa or Bowden that's getting up there.

NIL and transfer portal will certainly make the transition easier whenever it happens. Recruiting competition can't use impending retirement against a coach like they once did, even five to seven years ago.

He may not have a choice in the matter. His security blankies are gone. Not playing anyone within the conference likely ends next year. And his fav apologist is gone in barta. He lost a lot of power in all that
All depends on the boosters. As long as they're solidly in his corner,, he's safe..

Fitz would have been safe for life if not for the bombshell revealed over the summer. Frost and Chryst weren't so lucky, because they fell out of favor with key boosters.

The game charger could be if pressure builds to throw his son under the bus and make an offensive coordinator change. Maybe he would just "reassign" Brian within the staff or perform some other type of non firing-firing

That's the whole problem with option B. It feels lucky and gimmicky if it even happens. Nobody thinks Iowa deserves it, including me. I want a title that everybody thinks Iowa deserved, including Ohio St, Mich, PSU and MSU fans. In 2015 Iowa stated 12-0 but never played Ohio St, Mich, PSU. They didn't even play MSU until the CCG. In 2021, Iowa did beat a PSU team, but never played Ohio St, and did not play Mich until the CCG. Iowa needs a team not only good enough to make the CCG, but good enough to blow out the other team in the CCG. Then you can say that's a championship level team.

But over the last 20 years, only OSU (most years), PSU (once), and Michigan (the last 2 years) have really met that standard. Wisky and MSU made some noise while all 3 of the blue bloods were uncharacteristically down (SCANDAL at PSU, scandal at OSU, coaching changes as Mich), but you could asterisk those seasons as much as Iowa's 2015.

Maybe I am selling us short by thinking it is unrealistic to enter the upper-echelon. Clemson got there from the outside, and Oregon did as well. I think they have some distinct advantages over us, but maybe that is just defeatist.

Speaking personally, I can say I am satisfied cheering for a team that has a shot at 10 wins most years, with an outside chance of a conference title if things break just right. That leaves me happy most weekends in the fall, and it gives me enough hope to make each season exciting. If Iowa's expectations became more like Alabama, I might paradoxically enjoy football less because you can't really be excited (impossible to overachieve), but you can definitely be let down. That is my perspective as a fan who views this solely as entertainment...as a player, you always want the expectations and the target.

I thought the same thing when this person said this. He's got Phil and some incredible recruiters. With Barta gone, NIL will pick up.

With NIL, transfer portal and the 'new' B10 additions, it is very possible this could be Kirk's last year.
We have a favorable schedule in the last year of the B10 West. A possible championship game appearance might be just the exit he wants.

I could see it. With how they hit the portal and what they've done, it kind of has that feel of making one last run before it all comes to fruition next year. He's never been a fan of traveling out west for games and now they have conference teams from the west.

For some reason, I think he just has this one last run/season in him before saying F it.

This is kinda what I am thinking how it could happen. However, if Brian and Kirk have some special hidden unknown NIL skill for bringing in excellent talent that he appears to have coming in this year to play, THEN maybe we might want to think this out a bit. That of course is being optimistic, we will see how these new players work in whatever offense Brian puts on the field. There have been times that I would swear you could put the reigning Superbowl champs' offense under Brian and he would figure a way to eff it all up. So, lets wait and see how this works out this season before we throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I think he wants to qualify for the HOF - which anything above 9 this season would reach the threshold. I'm not saying that's driving his decision, but I bet it's at the very least in the back of his mind.
Bumping this thread in light of IGC's insightful post....
If true that he needs 9 wins, HOF status could well be the deciding factor in Kirk's decision to stay or go at the end of the year.
What happens if he makes it to 9 wins?
What happens if he comes up short?

It was something Dochterman had said in the offseason

I think Kirk retires right before or after the B10 Championship game.

If not, I don’t get letting Brian wear black on the side lines all rest of the season? IMO, that shit tells me all I need to know.

He needs one more win in the final 2 games to retire. He won’t retire on his own without a .600+ winning percentage.

I don’t see the win happening in the B1G championship so it’s going to come down to whatever matchup we have in the bowl game.

He's definitely been more emotional than usual in games down the stretch, but that could be for a number of reasons.

I think he’s a rounding error away currently, wonder if the hall can nudge you over.
