Kirk Speraw Named to Coaching Staff

I am truely stoked about this hire! It's such a good fit in so many ways. Like Shane said earlier, I am also "geeked" about the basketball team and I haven't been this excited about basketball in years. I have always been a football first guy, but lately my excitement for the football team has been on the back burner because I am looking so forward to see what Caff is going to do next, and that is no small feat considering how good our football team is going to be this year! If Caff can get ME this excited about Iowa B-ball, imagine how he will be able to sell this program to some top notch recruits. I think the sky is the limit for our new coach. I've never been one to drink the koolaide, but I'm beginning to develop a taste for it.

I'm starting to think hiring Fran will ultimately be judged as a brilliant move by Barta whenever his tenure as Iowa AD ends.

The depths to which Iowa basketball had fallen by late February, not only in losses and attendance, but the lack of emotional connection to the program for all of us who grew up watching in the '80s, was shocking.

If Fran gets Rodell (or another talented young assistant with Chicago connections), the caliber of the staff will have improved three fold compared to the previous regime.

On top of that, Barta found a guy who appears to consider this a destination job, says all the things we've wanted to hear but in a genuine way, and seems committed to playing a fun style.

Oh yeah, and Barta found him at a pretty good price, too.

Other than Pearl, what more could we have hoped for?

After seeing the staff that he has assembled i think its funny to think back on the meltdown that happened because we didnt hire Steve Forbes. Who knows how well Forbes wouldve done but I would wager Coach McCaffrey will prove to be a very successful hire. The coaching staff he is putting together shows how much he understands what needs to be done to win here.

Now go get Rodell Davis :)

Agreed. And while Forbes may have turned out ok, we would have been rolling the dice on an assistant.

Instead, we now have two head coaches.

Each assistant comes with a player. Francis = Basabe, Speraw = JC forward, Coach # 3 = PG. At least that is my prediction.

I was hunting down UCF recruits, Jarvis Davis committed after Speraw was fired. THought maybe there was in there... guess not.

Re: Kirk Speraw = New Asst Coach

I wonder when the new coaches are introduced at the first game if Speraw won't get as big of an ovation as Caff.

Re: Kirk Speraw = New Asst Coach

Think he has got to have some good coaching skills. Two head coaches on one staff, one a former Iowa player, what a great hire.

He'll have some impact recruiting with experience he has had coaching players who went on to NBA, but the next hire primary duty should be recruiting.

I can't believe how geeked I am for basketball season, especially when I take into account that football season's still 4 months away AND Iowa's still not going to be "that" good in hoops...but on April 23, 2010, I don't even care about that part...

I know EXACTLY what you mean :)

We will see he has been a head coach for a long time hard too fall back as an assistant, but good person.
