Kirk Ferentz, Iowa Players Support Noah Fant’s Decision

The bowl is only 50 days from the combine. Even a minor injury could impact your 40 time or shuttle time. A minor injury could also impact your preparation for the combine.

Preparing for a bowl game and training for the combine are two completely separate workouts. You can spend time in December training specifically for the combine rather than practicing and studying up on Mississippi State.

Are you trying to insinuate our coaches study the opponent? I'm not so sure about that.

It is funny about the combine tho that his time would be more beneficial trying to get more 225 reps than practicing to become a better football player. I cant believe how much they care about those numbers. You would think guys like King and Jewell would have embarrassed them enough by now.

100% agree there but it is what it is and you have to play the game.

Also, I think NFL scouts and executives expect their draft picks to come in a little raw. So a lot of the time they take the most athletic person and assume they can mold that person into a better football player. (see Tyreke Hill)

Its all about mitigating risk. How does what you achieved in college translate to the NFL? If you're an NFL exec would you rather take the prototypical cornerback that has length and runs a 4.4 40, or take a shot on Desmond King who is undersized and slower but shows great instinct for the ball? Instinct is tough to measure...speed and size isn't.

The 225 rep thing is ridiculous. Football is a series of 2-3 second pushes. Benching 225 has no bearing on your ability to do that. They need to come up with a circuit test that is something like:

20 yard dash, 315 x 2 reps, 20 yard dash, 20 seconds of rest and make guys do that like 5 times or something and then when they're close to puking make them do the Doyleizer just to see what they're made of.

It would be extremely ironic if one of these guys who skips the bowl game to get ready for the combine test their acl during a drill.

It could happen. Also sometimes players dont even know they're injured. They take a full medical evaluation at the combine and find out they have an injury or a heart condition they never knew about.

its all the more reason to take the money and run. Football is a fickle mistress.

I never understood the 225 rep test. I could bench that in high school and I was a pussy. What sense does reps make?

Maybe if more people start skipping bowl games, they will start having them right after the season instead of a stupid month layoff.

Especially with the invention of the CFP and the New Years 6...the other bowl games are little more than exhibitions anyways. seems like they're mostly used by schools as cash grabs and by coaches to inflate their records, salaries and bonuses.

I'm 41 and can still do 225 with a jacked up rotator cuff. For guys the size of NFL players it is a totally worthless test. I guess it is supposed to test endurance, but for a guy like Fant I'd rather see lower body fast twitch muscle endurance than bench press endurance.

The reason Fant was under-utilized isn't because of his brother or any of that bullshit. It's because he's not a true tight end in the mold of Iowa tight ends. Hockensen is. Hockensen is a better blocker. Fant is essentially a freakish huge wide receiver. He should've been used as such. They should have just split him out wide and laughed as defensive backs tried to deal with it.

I mean, it's what I would have done.

He's effective because lining up as a TE and occasionally going wide sets up a D to use LBs/DEs. Line him up as a true WR and he draws the best CBs. Not as much of a mismatch because 1) Fant is a fast TE, NOT a fast WR; 2) Good CBs face good receivers and know how to defend; and 3) With his hands, Fant is no better as a WR than anyone else.

Now, line him up as hybrid/H-back and then we're talking. It would justify the end-around/sweep plays we sometimes used him to run. Decoying him with ghost motion would have been more successful than actually handing him the ball.

Some people just don't know when to quit.

All I did there was point out something that would be ironic. You guys are acting like I'm saying Fant is an idiot or something. The people who thing there is only one right decision are the people being idiots.

Its definitely the right move, as long as you're not competitive and you have no loyalty to your teammates.

If the Hawks had won the West/played in B1G CG, that would be one thing. But...for Fant to stay around and tie the team record for most appearances in the Outback Bowl? Why?

Because most guys who play at this level love the game, love the competition, and love their team. I'm sure that's why TJ is playing in it.
