Kirk And The Middle Finger.

What are your thoughts on Kirk now, especially knowing what he does with the players that he recruits? Jon has a breakdown and comparison with Michigan and Florida recruiting classes in his Letter To Football America article.

Does Kirk Ferentz have the right to put the proverbial middle finger up to the fans, those that questioned him or wanted him ousted the last few years?

I admit, I was kind of leaning that way the last couple years but didn't like that I was and hoping he could pull a season off like this. Is this year an anomaly or is he back to his system where he had success in previous years after his evaluation? I do give him props for recognizing the need for an in-depth reevaluation of the program & leaving no stone unturned.

But, last Saturday when he was leaving the field with his team's 7-0 record, I just wondered if he had any inclination to put that big middle finger up in the air to Hawk fans as he ran off the field. :p

No, he won't put up the middle finger. He loves the program too much and many of the Iowa fans have stayed loyal to him. Plus, he is having the most enjoyable and surprising season of his career, and really enjoying the accolades that his son is getting for this fabulous offensive line. Plus, he makes over $4 million per year. Life is very good for the Ferentz family right now. I would also add that he simply isn't the type of person who would take that attitude. The Iowa story this year is simply amazing in so many ways.....the finest coaching job of Captain Kirk's career. I predicted 6-6 or 7-5 so I am truly humbled by what this coaching staff has done thus far. It reinforced for me how little I really know about college football.....Ferentz is having a triumphant season, and I believe there are more wins coming!

Well, the heat he got after the past several years was justified, regardless of this season. KF even admitted it himself that he hadn't spent as much time around the program as he could have... So he kind of made his own bed in that regard IMO.

That said, I'm hoping that this season is proof that he still knows how to coach and can get it done when he's giving it 110%, and that he will continue to have success. He's turning in a good year, so I'm willing to give KF props for that, too.

Is this year a fluke? The 7-0 start may be a bit flukey since 2009 was the only other season he managed to go undefeated this deep into the season. Not even 2002-04. So I don't expect 7-0 to start every year. But, I guess we shouldn't be surprised that KF is getting some results, given his past success. I think the guy knows football and just needed to rededicate (maybe reinvent) himself to coaching. That's my 2 cents.

Apparently we were all wrong. It's not over until the fat lady sings, so it's time to get her two airline seat taking, big mac supersized eating backside out of Kinnick.

I love where the program at this year, but that doesn't excuse a couple really bad years, and KFz deserved the heat he received!

KF giving fans the middle finger would never happen but I could see him "accidently" scratch his cheek with his middle finger while answer questions from certain members of the media. :)

Yep, I'd say he has that right. But he won't, because he's probably more mature and a better man than most of us.

The fact any of us might "expect" a middle finger is sort of humorous. KF isn't the type.

When he retires after 2020 season, he will go quietly, with a smile, and a "Thanks for the memories" walk-off. He is just too low-key for the "public" middle finger, and could probably care less about either boos or cheers in the grand scheme of things.

Funny, I had this same thought after Saturdays game. Not that Kirk would ever do it but I wouldn't blame him if he did. I also thought it could be a middle finger to Fritz. 250 rushing yards against one of the best rush defense in the country.

I would hope not, and why? Because i think he gets it. If the programs sucks people are gonna start ********, that starts with the head man.

I think you know that's how it works in this business going into it.

He should be thankful that he has gotten so much leeway here, at least from Barta anyways I guess.

I find it fairly humorous that there are still plenty around who feel like they deserve credit for this season's success by calling for KF to be fired after only ONE losing season since 2009. Outside of the blue bloods, you're going to be hard pressed to find a coach at a program similar to Iowa who can say that they not only have a 60% win percentage, have as few losing seasons as KF does while recruiting in a school and state that doesn't exactly lend itself to oodles of 4 and 5 star talent, with only a handful (not even a full hand's worth of fingers) of non-bowl seasons in a 17 year stretch.

Let's enjoy this season. We're still a young team, not many losses to graduation on the horizon on either side of the ball and some very clear depth that we didn't know about before, so with the same leadership and development we've got a pretty bright couple of years ahead of us.

Just remember, if you all had had your way we might have had Bielema right now. God help us.

And I think torching them on the ground for nearly 300 yards and putting up BOTH of the two best rushing performances against NW so far on the season in the same game was definitely a nice middle finger to Fitzy and Barnett

That's kind of my point. There is no way that he would ever do that, but one has to wonder if it runs through his mind that he'd like to on occasion. If I was getting paid $4 mil, I wouldn't have the kahoonas to do it either. ;)

What's happening this year is real, and it's amazing.
What happened the last 3 years was real too, and it was weak (to put it kindly).
The contrast is stunning.

I'm not a huge Deace fan but he nailed it. Barta and Ferentz both know they're playing for their lives. that has a lot to do with the changes. Interestingly enough, it may end up being Kirk's best coaching job of his career.

I don't think the play calling has changed that much were just executing better.CJ can stretch the field with his arm and scrambling ability. Were a run first pass second team but one thing I have noticed is we don't do the no huddle much this year. That's ok what ever works. If what the fans said and did last year opened up their eyes then good glad it happened. It's no secret that were playing better in all phases of the game and that reflects what the coaches are teaching.Thank You for changing it around.Lets keep it going.Go Hawks
