Kirk And The Middle Finger.

I don't think Kirk would do so. He's a man of integrity, and I think he recognized things had to improve. If he resorted to that gesture to the fans, I think he'd agree he have to do it to himself first.

I don't think the play calling has changed that much were just executing better.CJ can stretch the field with his arm and scrambling ability. Were a run first pass second team but one thing I have noticed is we don't do the no huddle much this year. That's ok what ever works.
Exactly right, to me New Kirk looks a lot like Old Kirk. Strong defense, strong run game. I think maybe I'll just call New Kirk, Vintage Kirk

I disagree to a point. I think it has changed and gone back to what worked prior to Greg Davis arriving. This Iowa team finally resembles the successful Iowa teams of years past. The past 3 years had Davis's offensive philosophy mixed in which didn't work. It was this disheveled hybrid mix with Ferentz's and just didn't work.

We lost the emphasis on the run for quick hitting out pattern throws. The O has just been a train wreck the past 3 yrs up until this year. We still haven't seen the TE play being as involved as the teams in 2000 - 2010 range, hopefully that will develop. I mean we see a couple passes a game, but not 6-8 to the TE like we used to see years ago.

KF's strength has always been player development which is very important at Iowa, more so than a Michigan or tOSU. I don't think any other program puts more 3 star (and less) athletes in the NFL. Now, add the "new" Kirk changes, more aggressive style, new facilities and I'm optimistic. If we can get King (and maybe Jaleel Johnson) to stay next year, we should be really good.

What's happening this year is real, and it's amazing.
What happened the last 3 years was real too, and it was weak (to put it kindly).
The contrast is stunning.

I'm not a huge Deace fan but he nailed it. Barta and Ferentz both know they're playing for their lives. that has a lot to do with the changes. Interestingly enough, it may end up being Kirk's best coaching job of his career.

Playing for their lives????? Kirk has more money than we'd ever dream of. He wants to win and succeed at his job. Every year whether your or I are happy or mad. Simple as that. Some people go punch the clock and trudge through the day to collect the check. Kirk is and has never been one of those types of people. We all know some like that though.

He may do it, but only by accident..

No. The pressure forced Kirk to do some soul searching. The fans getting angry was part of what spurred the change.

If you think Kirk thinks he owes the fans a thank you.... I think you're way off base. I bet deep down there is a spot that motivated Kirk to change this things around in spite of the fan base who he probably feels turned on him.

Kirk's smart enough to know that he needs the fans support to sell seats and stuff but he isn't out there winning games directly for the fans. He wants to win games to be successful, make the $ and see his players and program succeed. The rest just follows.

Just a guess...

What are your thoughts on Kirk now, especially knowing what he does with the players that he recruits? Jon has a breakdown and comparison with Michigan and Florida recruiting classes in his Letter To Football America article.

Does Kirk Ferentz have the right to put the proverbial middle finger up to the fans, those that questioned him or wanted him ousted the last few years?

I admit, I was kind of leaning that way the last couple years but didn't like that I was and hoping he could pull a season off like this. Is this year an anomaly or is he back to his system where he had success in previous years after his evaluation? I do give him props for recognizing the need for an in-depth reevaluation of the program & leaving no stone unturned.

But, last Saturday when he was leaving the field with his team's 7-0 record, I just wondered if he had any inclination to put that big middle finger up in the air to Hawk fans as he ran off the field. :p

I don't think he would do that, in fact I don't think it even enters his mind. I don't think what the fans said bothered him at all. I think the football team's on-field performance is what bothered him last year. Not so much that that games were lost, but HOW the games were lost. He rightfully admitted that changes had to be made... and they were. Not any one huge change, but a lot of little changes that added up to what we see on the field this season: a committed, hard working team that plays as a team who is greater than the sum of its parts.

I think the legacy angle played a factor in this. Being able to pass this on directly to BF means more to him than any dollar amount in his bank account. He has acknowledged at a lot of other places he would have been canned by now so he is wise enough to appreciate where he is at.

Here is the thing for me. I think the era of "That's Football" is over. I am one who thought the game had passed him by and I'm not afraid to admit it. If you look at last year the team lacked excitement, focus, and effort. Personally I think much of that had to do with the fact the team new CJB gave them the best chance to win and it took too long to admit being wrong about it. 8-0 as a starter is something that has never been done at Iowa, so those that thought CJB was better were clearly right. If I had to venture a guess I would say someone close to him said "Your Wrong" and he had to listen. Look at Nebby last year that game shouldn't even have been close if Ruddock could have hit any open targets game over, instead costly interceptions and lack of downfield throws lost it. You don't think the team sees the same thing we do. And honestly they way Jake took his ball and went home after losing his job makes it look like their could have been some other issues brewing, dividing the team. In my mind the biggest difference is Kirk finally got the balls to admit he was wrong. When he did the team rallied behind him and were proven correct that CJB is the difference maker this team needed all along. Better late than never. I admire Kirk both for his stubbornness and his humility, but He was the one that needed to apologize to Hawk fans, not the other way around.
