KF said Fant is a specialist!

In his weekly press conference, Rob reported that KF said Fant is a specialist! What the hell does that mean? Your overall best offensive weapon and athlete is a specialist. I’m sorry, trying to understand this as much as I can, but as a fan I think that’s a giant load of crap.
He did not say Fant is a specialist. He said “more of a specialist”. That is a distinction with a difference. In context, he said Hockenson was more “versatile”

Clearly he was being diplomatic about Fant receiving like Tarzan and blocking like Jane.

There is plenty to criticize Ferentz about; no need to lie about it.

* * *

It is coaching malfeasance that Fant only saw 8 snaps the entire second half.
That’s ridiculous.

Even if I give Ferentz the point that Hockenson is the #1 TE because of his “versatility” (blocking), what other skill position player is better than Fant?

Easley? No
I(WR)M? No
I(RB)M? No
Sargent? No
Young? No
Cooper? No
B.Smith? No — and he was out the NW game!

It’s just stupid coaching to not have your “second best” offensive player on the field as many snaps as possible. 8 is not as many snaps as possible.

I don’t care if you have to run twin TEs more or if you want to use trips then put Fant at one of those spots. It is horrible game planning and offensive scheme to not have your playmakers on the field

Rastetter AINEC. He is 3-3 passing in his career and has a 514 passer rating this season.
LLLLOL

Thanks. I needed that. :)

I’m stilled po’d about that game plan, offensive scheme, and that statement.

Maybe we should put Noah Fant at RB:) Seriously though, when was the last Iowa skill player projected to go 11th in the NFL draft. I can't think of one. I think Chuck Long went 12th? and Ronnie Harmon a little after that.

Did anyone in the press conference follow up KF's "more of a specialist" statement with a question about the specific situations where Fant's skills WOULD be utilized? Or do they know enough about KF's mannerisms to realize it was just another throw away answer that he had no intention of elaborating about?

I wish one time the media would just get up and leave en masse, right after one of his vacuous responses. Of course KF would not be bothered by that, but if the media demanded some respect from him, they might actually force him to give thoughtful responses, which will only benefit his team's psyche. Bottom line, his "execution" in the press conference shows an absolute lack of preparation, and worse, a disrespectful attitude to all those in attendance and to all their readers.

Ferentz’s handling of Fant is going to cost him recruits. He is literally costing his best player millions of dollars. Unbelievable!
Are you kidding me? He's created a whole new position that no other program has, he's opened doors, not closed them.

You're all looking at this through the wrong prism.

Buddy Ryan once famously cut Cris Carter (who also admittedly did have some baggage at the time) and had the famous quote "All he does is catch touchdowns."

The Vikings said thank you very much, we'll take a future Hall of famer for the next twelve years.

I wonder if Kirk has the same sentiments about Fant.

I wonder what Brian thinks about all of this.

I guess I never realized that our well oiled, highly potent, sniper like offense had specialists. I thought they were all assasins.

Whatever Kirk is trying to accomplish it is not good for the Iowa program and it hasn't been good for wins in the last 3 games either. Some media outside of Iowa have already begun to question what is going on with Iowa's Fant. We don't need any more bad press beyond what we've shown on the field thus far.

Tight end Noah Fant is the poster prospect for Nebraska’s bizarre in-state recruiting failures before the arrival of Scott Frost. Oddly, the school Fant chose — Iowa — seems to have lost him on its own sideline.

The Fants don't have to say anything about the situation directly they can just copy quotes from the rest of the world to make their point.

"Some media outside of Iowa", meaning Omaha? I am incredulous that an Omaha paper would have something negative to say about Iowa. What's next, the Moline Dispatch doing an investigative piece on IKM being listed as the backup on this week's depth chart.

All kidding aside, his use of Fant deserves criticism.

I get your point but there are other sources. Can't be good in Chicago either.

Yep, ridiculous. Fant should be #1 WR period and send him deep for at least 4 deep balls a game and curl another receiver under his deep route. HOck should be getting some deep routes with Lbkrs or safeties on him

If they ever lined up fant and Hockenson on the outside at the exact same time opposite sides of the field it would draw the safeties into a cover 2 which would open up running lanes . These coaches are seriously clueless at creating mismatches. Run the damn ball out of the spread and throw the damn ball out of the spread with your best players on the field

Kirk is really making it more convoluted than it has to be. Does Brian think the same way?
