KF Responds to Ed Cunningham Comments

I think a team moved up to 3rd round, made him the backup...thats just what im hearing. Lol He was 5th round at best at one point. It didnt HURT him or his stock was the point. He still should have been removed from a "trying to win the game" standpoint....but....loyalty....and....wasnt our backup the same guy who sharted his pants a couple times against the legend that is Wyoming High School this past week? So...........?
Maybe more teams other than Shanahan's 49ers would've been interested in CJ...maybe even in earlier rounds? Can you say definitively the 3 interceptions in the Florida game didn't adversely affect his draft status? No, you can't.

I guess I ask, why in the world would you put your Freshman QB that's the future of your program in that game during any meaningful minutes when it was clear Iowa was over matched? It could have done serious damage for Iowa's future at the position too.

Maybe Iowa should just ask that they stop the game? Seriously - make sense here. Please tell me why it was so clear that he should have come out when he's medically clear, the coaches want him to play, he wants to play and his parents want him to play. And IF he comes out, does putting Stanley in do ANYTHING other then hurt the programs future?

How does Stanley playing hut the program?
I guess we have philosophical differences here.
Me? I am in favor of playing young guys in games that we have no chance at winning or losing.
That doesnt hurt the program. It helps the program.

1. Blowout game that there was no chance of winning.

2. Not being mobile leads to getting hurt. If he would have taken a shot to the head, or had his head slammed on the turf because he couldn't move you'd be singing a different tune.

3. Stanley had burned his shirt already and could have used any snaps he could get.

Stanley's composure was rather fragile last Saturday. What makes you think he would have been ready to play in the fourth quarter of a bowl game last year.

.

I guess we do. Look at what FL did to CJ, a guy with close to 25 starts under his belt and a 3rd round pick. It was clear that he was getting destroyed back there, what do you think they do to a true freshman with like 9 career passes under his belt? How does putting him into that situation help anything? Confidence? Probably not. Experience? Experience running for your life i guess and getting T'd off on. Mental growth? Team mate confidence? It was a lose lose situation for the staff.

Instead it. for sure, did serious damage, mentally, to the outgoing QB. Is the outgoing QB expendable?

I completely disagree with saying Stanley's composure was fragile. He threw a pick that was tipped. He didn't pack it in. He got right back up after every miscue and went out there and played. Did he make first game starting mistakes - big yes. Did he lose his composure or confidence, I don't think so.

Play the game like any normal Iowa game and run the ball 3 times. Since Florida's defense dominated Iowa's offense, punt it, and put the onus on the defense like every Iowa game.

I agree - wonder what his development would have been like if KF let him get T'd off on in the FL game last year?

Some people here will always take the side that gets to attack Ferentz, no matter what.

You're not making an informed opinion here man - CJ only threw the ball 23 times

He absolutely would not have been ready. That's why he should have been playing.

Those snaps would have, in my opinion, been invaluable.

How can you say it hurt his draft stock when he went higher than anyone expected? Also I think San Fran said they liked CJ's "toughness" (code word for ability to play injured) when they took him.

You're missing the point as so many before you have. When you've lost the game and your QB isn't 100% . . . you play for the future. What is the point watching a guy who is already hobbled just get beat up further in a lost cause? Answer: there is no constructive team-oriented reason.
