Key differences

1. Style of play.

2. Recognition of what it takes to recruit at this level, based on experience.

3. Willingness to adapt to the talent.

4. Relationship with players off the court.

5. Desire to reach out to former players, perhaps even on staff.

Let me know what I'm leaving out. I see no reason why this won't work, as long as we can recruit--and I think we will.

My streaming vid cut out right during Fran talking about the Assistants. Did he mention he would consider former players on his staff?

I was hesitant regarding this hire at first, but after hearing Fran speak, I'm 100% for him. I am excited to see what he can do at Iowa.

Yes he did. By the way he talked about it, I would be surprised if we don't see a former player on the bench personally.

Yes, he said he had some coaches on his Siena staff that he is considering and that he is "giving serious consideration to having an Iowa presence on the staff, perhaps a former player."

I'd take recruiting experience over the former player, but we could have both in Gamble. Or, if we have the recruiting contacts through other staff, then I wouldn't be surprised to see Kenyon Murray if he's interested, since Fran recruited him out of high school and has a relationship.

Excellent. If anything, I think Barta deserves credit for making sure our new coach fully understood some of the desires of Iowa fans.

In the clips I've seen of Fran --- he also shows every sign of having a pulse, and then some, when coaching from the bench. Also, the wife.

I liked, in a morbid kind of way, the B10 Network guy's summation of Iowa's offense under Lickliter - paraphrasing here "...it could put a glass eye to sleep".

All indications are that's not going to be how a McCaffery offense rolls.

I'd really like him to have Settles or Murray on the staff. That'd be kinda cool! Props to Barta, he saw something out there that none of us seen.

I love that McCaffery already has some relationships with former players from his time at Notre Dame. That should make getting them involved even easier.

I was disappointed at first yesterday, but now I'm genuinely excited about this hire!

6. Sideline demeanor

Did you see some of those clips of Siena playing? BTN did a whole montage of McCaffery ranting with his veins bulging out of his head. The guy gets into it, that's for sure.

Not sure what Jess is doing now, but I lived next door to him for over a year in 2004-2005. All he talks about is Iowa sports. He lives for it. I would also love to see him taking a bigger role in Iowa's Basketball program.

could anyone in the know tell me if there was any past player interaction with the team when Lick/Alford were here ( other than Hansen ).

Seems like him and the wife have a sense of humor as well. I loved Barta's comment about strapping Margaret into her seat at CHA! Well played sir.

I'm sure Settles is a Pharmaceutical Rep.

He was asked if the fact that the failure/firing of Lick, who also came from a smaller school like Fran, was a red flag for him coming to Iowa. He said not at all, and that the big difference between him and the previous coach was his experience turning around three different programs. "I've been successful everywhere I've been."

I like this guy. And his crazy wife.
